Raine slowly and carefully slid herself out of the driver's seat and purposly left her door open, incase this worthless, broken SUV could be used as a safe haven for a passing survivor. 1
As she walked, every small noise made her jump. Her heartbeat sped up each second, nervousness and fear making her body feel slightly shaky. Right now though, she had to keep going. Every second she was out in the open was a second she could be spotted and mutilated beyond recognition, and that was the last thing she wanted.2
Continuing her not so calming stroll through the cars, interweaving where other accidents or tailgating incidents had happened, she looked through the windows of the vehicles, more than eager to find one that had anything usable in it. After a little while, a thought hit her, this one not making her wish for a sudden heart attack. As far as she had seen or heard, nobody was around. This previously crowded place was completely barren of people of both the living and undead. Well, no people means no attacks, right? she thought, continuing to peer into random windows. 3
"Someone! Please help me!!"4
Damn...apparently not right. Raine began to ignore the pain that shot up and down into her spine, her head eventually going from anguish to numb from it's persistance as she sped up. The one thing she noticed as she ran, though, is the smell of the air. As she advanced, the smell of rot and decay became stronger, but that didn't stop her, either. She had apparently already decided she was helping someone, whether or not it was her conciousness' doing. 5
Once she was within about a yard of the person in need of assistance, she abruptly stopped running, the quick stop almost making her fall on her face. A large man (or what used to be a man), looking to be over 6 feet tall and probably close to 300 pounds was limping towards a horror stricken girl, who had nothing but a standard sized hammer to protect herself with. 6
"Hey, you overweight bastard!" Raine yelled at the top of her lungs, beginning to walk towards the creature. It turned around and the girl gave her a look of thankfulness and worry. "Yeah, that's right! Get your ass over here!!" By now, she was having to walk backwards as the creature slowly began walking after her. The adrenaline had begun wearing off and the pain began to seep into her head and her legs, causing walking to not only become painful, but to be hard work to continue. Her feet felt like they were made of stone from soreness, and several times the thought of just stopping so that the pain would cease slipped into her mind, but she pushed those ideas to the side. "Hey, girl over there! There's a truck right next to me. When I back up enough, get in there and lock both of the doors, okay?!" she yelled, screwing herself over again. Not hearing a reply, she repeated herself, this time louder.7
"Alright!" the girl replied, her voice shaking and cracking. She must be crying, Raine thought. 8
The creature infront of her groaned loudly, his wide mouth allowing her to smell the putrid scent of his decaying organs. She almost gagged several times, but held it back. Remembering the knives in her hands, she lunged at the huge beast, the large, long knife in her left hand directed towards the center of his neck. It plunged into the fatty neck tissue and slid through it, just barely hitting the jugular vein before the momentum built up from the lunge was lost. Raine's eyes widened in shock once the blade stopped. Rotted blood spurt into her face, a gasp causing her to inhale some of it and begin choking. Her eyes began watering and she released the knife, allowing herself to stagger backwards as she coughed. The monster, seeming a bit annoyed at the fact that she had done that, groaned loudly and gripped her by the upper arm and pulled it towards his wide, gaping mouth. 9
"No!" she managed to croak, still recovering from inhaling such rancid fluid. "I-I can't die yet!" She took the other knife in her right hand- a wide, sharp chef's blade this time- raised it above her head as far as she could, then brought it down onto the rotted arm's wrist. At once, the hand released her and she rubbed her upper arm tenderly, sudden fear hitting her harder than she thought it would: this was the present, this was the future. This was till death, like marriage to a cheating whore; one wrong move, and you're pretty much screwed. If she died now, then that was it. There would be no second chances. Right now, she wasn't even sure if she'd actually survive anymore. Was it possible to change if you get the bodily fluids of an infected in your body? All I can do is hope and survive, she thought decidedly, getting ready for another attack by the beast infront of her, whom was all but forgotten. This time he came at her head first, teeth bared and gnashing wildly at her. His feet, however, didn't move at the same speed, nor the same time and he fell face first on top of her. 10
Raine gasped in surprise and yelped loudly, the massive body atop her crushing her into the cold, hard gravel below. She felt her lungs compress, his huge stomach sending shockwave after shockwave of pure pain through every little part of her body. Her head, too, was held underneath him; she was suffocating, but couldn't do anything about it since everytime either the creature or herself did so much as twitch, she'd feel another jolt of pain rush down her spine. Her lungs felt like they were on fire, as if she was inhaling pure ash from a bonfire not even 6 inches away from her face. Her vision began getting small white specks of light in the utter darkness of the man's gut, and she knew that was a sign that she was going to pass out and possibly even die, if nobody got to her in time.
