A Step Back

The car door opened.1

A tall figure got out slowly. His hand gripped the top of the car as he stepped out. His dark brown hair fell over his eyes, partially masking the light steam of blood that was coming from his forehead.2

Hannah looked up at him. Her eyes still wide from what had just happened. She opened her mouth to speak but no words came out. 3

"Tch. What a shame." He said as he walked over to where Alister and Emily lay. He kicked lightly at Alister's foot.4

"I thought you were dead!" Sarah ran to him, dropping the handgun down to the floor by Hannah. She opened her arms and attempted to embrace the boy.5

"Sarah..." His eyes narrowed as he pulled a knife from his pocket and held it to her throat. "If you take one step...I will kill you."6

"Rai...What are you doing...?"7

It was him alright. Raierta, with his brown hair and icy blue eyes. But something was very wrong with him. This was not the Rai that Sarah knew. He had just killed her sister. More so...He had just threatened to kill her.8

Rai is sitting on the rafters of the school building, looking down at the children who are sitting below him. He sees some of the kids passing notes, others whispering about the teacher. In Rai's hand he is holding a necklace, a piece of rose quartz wrapped in a silver wiring. It was a gift.11

As the children filed out, Rai prepared to come down from his little home and take a walk. When it was clear, he dropped down, landing as agile as a cat. 13

He gasped and wheeled around. Hannah was standing there. She was shocked to see him. He had run away not that long ago, not telling anyone where he went. To find him this close to home was very shocking.17

"Hannah...Hey...How are you?" He asked quietly.19

She approached him slowly, putting her hand on his cheek. He leaned into it slightly. Hannah searched his eyes for an answer as to why he was there. He looked away from her, unwilling to provide her with what he knew she so desperately seeking. 21

She took a step closer, touching her lips lightly to his. Rai's body stiffened and he held her away from him. 23

"No...I'm sorry. I can't."25

Hannah looked down. "Sorry..."27

"Anyway...How has everyone been? Sarah, Alister and Emily I mean?" He brushed the hair out of his face and waited for her answer, ignoring what had just happened.29

"Well...Sarah's pretty devastated that you left...Alister is pretty sore at you for it. Emily thinks you're going to come back sometime soon...She just found out a few days ago she' expecting."31

Rai's mouth twisted into a hard line. "Expecting...?"33

"A baby. Alister is ecstatic."35

Rai walked to the door, holding it by the frame and looking out to the graveyard. Hannah stepped up to him uneasily, feeling the change in his mood. 37

"Good-bye, Hannah."39

She stood and watched him walk out the door. Hannah shivered lightly. Suddenly afraid of what was to come.41
