Clowns Feet: Or How I Learned That The Laws Of Gravity Don't Apply To Carnie Games

I, Sarah, am a gambling addict. I am not old enough to partake in any legal gamboling in any states, and I am not one of those kids that play poker with their friends on the weekends. My addiction takes heed twice a year, when the carnies come to town and they bring with them the Clown Feet.1

Now, you 'normal' people most likely have no clue what the hell the Clown Feet are. The Clown Feet is an easy game. You wait for the feet to get all the way back, hit and hold the stopper, and insert coins. The object of the game is to get crappy cheap key chains, chips that can be exchanged for stuffed animals, knives, etc., and more coins. Now if done properly, the pay off rate for this game is 3 goes in 7 come out, or at least it should be, but this is where the game becomes a drug.2

For example: Between the window case and the edge of the shelf is a space of about four inches. Lets say you walk past a particular machine and see a whole fistful of coins hanging off, and you think to yourself: "Just one coin should knock those off". Well, you my friend would be wrong.3

I went today to the local carnival and won myself a monkey. That two dollar, if that, monkey cost my father fifteen dollars. That's 150 coins that we paid for, folks. Through the course of the game we traded in a weird game, one blue chip (the monkey cost three and I had four, with the one traded in I thought I could get two more to get a bigger monkey), a car, a peace sign, and several other small miscellaneous pieces of crap. 4

Now I spent ninety percent of the time at this one machine simply because two blue chips were hanging so far off the edge that they should have fallen down long ago. 5

That's when I figured it out. It hit me like a boulder dropped on your big toe, painfully. Gravity does not apply to carnival games. There had to have been three pounds worth of weight on that coin, but it just floated there. It was outrageous!6

But, alas, next July I will be there for the county fair, cash in hand, simply because I can't stop. 7

Author notes

...I wish this wasn't true...I just can't help but play those retarded games...I'm sorry this wasn't very good...It sounded a lot better in my mind...But hey...Anything can happen...Much love...~~Sarah

there's this one game at my local bar called: "Pot-o-Silver" and you hit the skill stop button at the right time, and then you insert coins, and then let go, and see if anything drops because there is this metal bar that moves back and forth, giving forward thrust... well usually i lose about $2 on this game but i feeelllt soo happy one time because i won like $12 ^_^ but umm yeah i'm addicted to that game too ^_^

Great job, you captured well the addicting lure and crushing disappointment of it all! I myself find the water gun races addicting, I'm not bad at it either. But it can drain the pocketbook quite fast! Good job, made me smile.

oh Dear! This brought back memories. The game Cyberartist talks about, I used to work it at Palisades Amusement Park! And yes, if you search the "Old Geezer's " archives, they even wrote a song about the place. The first salt water pool, respite with waves. And at one time, the largest roller coaster in the country. Sheesh! Am I dating myself. And the stories!! Great penning. I enjoyed tremendously!

Sarah this story made me smile when I was younger (yes ok stop laughing I get the old jokes ) there was a game that sounds much the same where a platform moved back and forth. The carnies would load coins on the ledge and you would drop more coins hoping to push multiple coins over the edge and into your pocket I’m sure the carnies stuck down the front coins but the game was soooooo additive. This was a fun read I hope to read more of your short stories best of luck with this

This was told so well that in my mind, I could clearly see you struggling, getting anxious and even become frustrated with dogged determination to make those darn coins drop. I have never been good at those so I always avoid them. I this "thing" about spending all that money and not having something to show for it. I'd rather hit up the mall! I did enjoy this and I must admit it was something I would have thought of for a story entry so your creativity was very appreciated. Thank you for entering our contest and good luck!

heh, i know exactly what machine you're speaking of, i've 'been there' i personally haven't been to a carnival in quite a while though, so my addiction has not been fed... this piece was quite well written though, it captures the concept nicely well done.

We must have all been tempted to get that one coin "just hanging there for the want of one nudge, just one more should do it" then after putting a pocketful of coins into the dratted machine, we realise the utter hopelessness of it and walk away watching the next person going through the same process.

Well Done I enjoyed reading this.
