"Oww, my head..." Raine's eyes slowly opened as she rubbed them, her head still extremely groggy. There was a mysterious sticky spot between her eyes and when she touched it, it sent pain straight into the rest of her head. Looking into the mirror above her dashboard, she realized that it was dry blood and an ugly bruise. Her left cheek had bruised as well, and she had a small amount of dried blood below her lip. After a second of pondering how she had gotten injured, it dawned on her and her body stiffened in fear. 1
It was already night time, and by the darkness of the sky, the dawn was pretty far away. A long string of profanities slipped through her lips as she carefully reached for her bag. It wasn't in the passenger seat, but on second inspection she saw that it had simply falled to the foot mat on the passenger side. She had to reach even further for the black messenger bag and felt a jolt of pain flow through her, causing her arm to retract backwards to her body. 2
"Dammit..." she muttered in pain, biting her lower lip to keep herself from feeling as much anguish as she had before. It worked just well enough for her to grab the strap, and she let her arm snap back to her side. She opened the flap in the front and pulled out small phone from the bag, flipping it open to see the time. 11:43pm. She swore again and dialed her boyfriend's number.3
"Raine! Where are you?!"
"A-Aiden, nice hello there," she replied smugly, giving a small laugh until a pang of pain shot through her back. "I'm somewhere on the interstate...I'm not sure where. Some idiot slammed into the SUV I stole from my mom, and I must have blacked out. I'm in pain worse than the most horrible PMS cramp any girl has ever had, but I'll live."
"Damn...well, what types of weapons did you pack up?"
"I couldn't get ahold of any of my grand dad's guns, so I just stole a kitchen drawer supply of knives...now that I think about it, I'm downright screwed, huh?" Raine forced a small laugh.
Aiden didn't reply. The only thing she heard on his end was a stifled sob. He must have known how slim the chances of her actually making it were.
"Please don't cry! I'll get out of this mess, I promise. I've gotten out of all types of weird situations, so this'll just test how epic I am, right? Plus, I'm not dead yet, even after that crazy car accident!" her voice was overly cheerful, completely fake. Apparently he noticed it to, but didn't say anything about it. "I love you so much. Please be safe!"
"I love you, too. You better not go and die on me now!"
Raine grinned and laughed- a real one this time. "If I die, I promise you can spray paint 'The Cake is a Lie' on my coffin as much as you want. Bye!" She hung up the phone and continued laughing softly at her comment, stopping quickly before the pain from the laughter hurt her too badly.4
The first idea that came to her mind was to start the car, but she quickly pushed that idea aside; after taking such a beating, the thing probably wouldn't even work. And if it did, she wouldn't be going anywhere, anyway. She was smashed between two other large vehicles. The next idea was to wait until morning. That, too, fled her mind as she felt her stomach give off a small rumble. Oh dammit, why didn't I bring anything to eat? she thought in annoyance. Surely, one of these cars, empty of people or not, must have something edible inside, right? And maybe even a weapon that doesn't totally suck!5
At the moment, that would be her first priority, she decided as she slipped the cell phone inside of the bag and retrieved her two best knives. She carefully slid the strap of the bag over her head and let it fall to her shoulder and unlocked the driver-side door. Current mission, Get Something To Eat! she thought in amusement, giving off a light, well-worth-the-pain giggle.
