A Mage's Secret Heart ch 11

Devante sat there in his chair watching the crowd for at least half an hour before he finally seen Calista. He smiled and looked down at Cyan to see him sleeping “wake up Cyan.” he said as he nudged him. Cyan woke up and looked at him with a yawn “come on before I lose her again.” he said as he grabbed Cyan’s leash and Cyan followed. Calista was surrounded by all of the families friends and Devante knew that she really didn’t want to be there so he butted his way through the crowd, politely of course, and asked Calista if she would like to dance. Calista smiled at her friend and nodded “of course, please excuse me.” she said  as she grabbed his hand and they headed for the dance floor “thank you Devante for rescuing me.” she said. Devante smiled “it was my pleasure my lady.” he says as they begin to dance. Calista smiled at him “you know it has been a while since I have had the pleasure of dancing with you, I almost forgot how good you are at it.” she said. Devante smiled “well then let me refresh your memory.” he said as he gave her a good twist which caused Calista to laugh.1

Cyan sighed as he watched the two dance across the dance floor and he hoped that soon he would be the one dancing with her and making her laugh. He sighed once more and then lay down looking at the feet of the people dancing not wanting to watch the couple anymore as it made him sick to his stomach however he found himself glancing up at them and at how happy she seemed to be with Devante and he started to wonder himself why she and he never got together and why they were never more than just friends. He watched as the music stopped and everyone stopped dancing and he seen Devante whispering something to Calista and then they headed towards him so he sat up and looked as best he could.2

Devante smiled as he seen Cyan and he looked at Calista “this is your present from me to you, he is an elegant white wolf and will protect you on your travels.” he said. Calista’s eyes were wide at the beautiful wolf and she smiled “oh Devante he is beautiful.” she said as she went over and pet his head. Devante smiled as he seen that “what’s his name?” she asked. Devante’s eyes widened “ummm I didn’t give him one, you choose one for him.” Calista smiled “well alright then, what should I call you?” she asked herself as she looked at the wolf and his beautiful light blue eyes “I think I’ll call you… Kegan.” she said. Devante smiled and looked at Cyan who nodded with approval of his new name “I think he approves.” he said. Calista smiled “well I’m glad.” she said as she began to scratch his head behind his ears which he seemed to love as he was licking her hand and whining happily. Devante smiled and sighed “well Calista I would love to stick around but I have matters I must attend to at the house so I must bid you farewell and I wish you luck and safety on your journey.” he said with a bow. Calista looked at Devante for a moment “wait just what am I supposed to do with Kegan while I’m gone?” she asked him. Devante smiled “take him with you he will protect you.” Calista looked at Kegan and then smiled and nodded “I bet he will.” she said as she stood up and gave Devante a big hug “farewell my friend and I will see you when I return.” she says. Devante smiled and nodded “yes you will, I must go now.” he says as he pulls from her embrace “farewell lady.” he says and then leaves and heads back for home leaving Kegan and Calista to bond.3

Calista watched Devante go and then she looked at Kegan “well I suppose the dance floor is no place for you, so lets get you up to my room I bet you need some rest anyway.” she said as she got up and started for the stairs. Kegan, as Cyan was now called, got up and followed her up the stairs and to a room. Calista smiled as she opened the door and walked inside and Kegan followed her “this is my room and you can stay in here tonight I just hope that you don’t over sleep.” she said as she headed back for the door “I have to get back to the party now so you feel free to make yourself at home.” she said as she gave him a little wave goodbye and then headed out the door closing it behind her. Kegan sighed as he watched her leave and then he went to exploring the room and trying to find a comfortable spot in the floor for him to sleep since it would be very inappropriate to sleep with her even if she thought he was just a wolf he was still Cyan and he was still a gentlemen. He walked around the room until he found a nice little spot in a corner and he lay down and soon he felt the heavy ness of sleep weighing on his eyelids and he fell into a deep sleep.4
