3~ Chapter Two: Departure ~4
________________________________________________________________________5
Once we got back home mom was very upset to see us soaked in water, of course. She asked us all the usual questions a mom would ask if you arrived home soaked in rain. I told her the truth. But not all of it.6
Once mom was finished discussing about the broken camera with David she ordered us to take a bath and I was happy to accept the command.7
We had only one bathroom and it was upstairs. If you came inside our house the first thing you’ll see in front of you were the oak stairs on your right and an open doorway that led to the kitchen. On your left would be a large opening in the wall that led into the living room. When you go up the straight stairs you are met by a narrow hallway with white walls & wooden flooring. Just on your left is an oak door that led to the bathroom. And if you travel a few feet ahead you’ll find two other oak doors opposite of each other. The one on the left was David’s bedroom and the one on the right was mine. And if you went to the end of the hallway you’ll see one last door. And that door led to our parent’s room. Well, now it’s just mom’s…8
When she left us to go fetch some cleaning utensils to clean up the puddles we’ve made on her floor I dashed for the stairs.9
“Hey!” David shouted.10
Once I reached the stairs I ran all the way up skipping every second step. At the very top I quickly reached for the doorknob to the bathroom and opened the door. Then I slammed the door shut and locked it. I pressed my back against the door and slowly tried to catch my breath. A little smiled triumphantly formed on my face.11
“No fair! You got a head start! You cheated!” David was now furiously banging his fists upon the door; abusing it. “Open the door!12
“In 15 minutes I will.” I answered with a smile. “Or maybe more.” I whispered to myself.13
Once I regained enough breath I walked towards the ivory bathtub, which was connected to the walls, and turned the knob for the shower to full blast. I ignored his rhythmical banging’s and complains that came from behind the bathroom door because I knew well that he was going to give up. It’s not like this was the first time it’s ever happened.14

10:37 PM. I was in my room packing the few things that I thought were essential to me once I reached the other side of the sea. A flashlight, hunting dagger, candy bar, soda, & my BB gun just in case. And to carry these objects I had a shoulder bag. A shoulder bag which I haven’t used in years until today. I quickly placed all the items in the bag and strapped it on my shoulder. Then, when I knew I was ready to leave I opened my bedroom door.16
“Hey, Chirs.”17
“Huh?”18
It was David.19
“What are you doing up this late?” I whispered quite harshly at him.20
“I was just getting a drink and I-” He paused. He was eyeing the strap that was on my shoulder and the bag. “Hey, where are you going?”21
“I’m going out for awhile….”22
“Again? You know mom’s not going to like this. She might find out!”23
“Shhh!! She won’t…Now go back to bed!” I closed the door behind me.24
“No! I want to come too.”25
“No, you stay here. Where I’m going is no place for kids like you.”26
“I’ll tell mom.”27
Damn it. If he stays here he really is going to tell mom. But, if I let him come with me he’ll just be a pain to look after.28
I paused for a bit. Then I sighed, “Fine. But, I want you to stay close to me and don’t go wandering off, OK? ”29
“OK.”30
I can’t believe that I was doing this. The kid was just going to ruin everything. I just know it.31
I quietly walked down the stairs to the front door. A wavering bright moon shone its light through the glass of the door so it helped aided our sights in the dark. When my hand was on the doorknob I turned to face David. A grayish-blue light was overlapping the color of his skin.32
“You ready?”33

“You’re going across the lake?” David inquired.35
“Funny, I thought it was a sea.” I was already sitting in the wooden boat examining it. There was a gray piece of paper right in the middle of the boat’s floor and I picked it up. The paper had some sort of writing on it but it was indecipherable due to its soaked condition. And since it seemed to be useless for us I tossed it into the water.36
“Do you remember what dad said? He said that we weren’t allowed to go over there!”37
“Dad’s not here. So you coming? Or are you scared to?” I was hoping that maybe the idea of riding across this lake/sea (whatever it is) will change his mind.38
He was looking out at the glistening moonlight dancing on the surface of the waters. I saw his eyes trailing their movements. He was hesitating I could tell.39
“I-I…No. Of course not. I’m not scared!” He climbed into the boat but there was a look of uncertainty on his face. He was always easy to read.40
“You sure?”41
He nodded. “Yeah…I’m sure.”42
“OK.” I grabbed the ends of the paddles and started to use them to push the boat off the shore. It took a while but I finally got it to drift off into the water. David had his hands clenched tightly onto the rim of the boat. His shoulders were tensed up and his eyes were clamped shut.43
“Promise me you won’t tip the boat over.”44
“Nothing’s going to happen to us. So relax.” I mean how could I tip the boat over? The water was surprisingly calm.45
Throughout the boat ride David was still in the same position when we departed and it was quiet. A little too quiet.46
“Are we there yet?” He said after a long ten minutes.47
“Yeah. Almost there.” I looked behind me and saw the trees. They were much taller than I imagined and there was also some mist forming over the water ahead of us.48
He yawned.49
“If you start falling asleep-“50
“Just because I yawned doesn’t mean I was going to fall asleep!” His eyes burst opened and his tense expression slowly disappeared when he looked at his surroundings. “Where are we?”51
Where were we exactly? I have entered the mist and it starting to shroud us so much that it was difficult to see anything. It was if we were actually inside a dark cloud. The water wasn’t visible anymore so it was easier for David to loosen up a bit.52
“We’re inside a mist.” I said it calmly as though it didn’t bother me at all when really it did. “You scared now?” I saw that his hands were still clamped tightly on the rim of the boat.53
“N-no. Of course not. What’s a little mist going to do?”54
“Exactly. It’s just a little mist and nothing else. What’s there to be scared of out here?”55
I spoke too soon.
