Reality S3 Episode 39 - Let's Play Hide and Seek

Episode 39 - Let's Play Hide And Seek 1

PREVIOUSLY ON REALITY - Josh quit his job at a supermarket and contacted Dennis in hopes of a job at his newspaper. He also was locked out of his old apartment after uncovering Janet and Larry kissing. His twin brother died four years ago. Dennis was horrified when he overheard a drunken Nick telling everyone of their relationship despite saying he wanted to keep it a secret. He sent an e-mail to Nick ending their relationship. Doug spread vicious rumours about his father, which led to the latter leaving home to think. Kerry was furious with her son while he himself seemed pleased. Adam reunited with Alley when she came to his car agency. Sadie jumped to conclusions and assumed he was cheating on her. She left angrily ignoring his pleas of innocence. She later realised her mistakes but Adam had already gone to sleep at his grandparents, much to the delight of the scheming Maureen.2

Josh returns home in the hopes of starting fresh. Adam and Sadie think over their relationship. Dennis works on employing a new reporter. Doug schemes his way through therapy.3

-------------------------------------------------------------------4

(The song “Speed of Sound” by Coldplay plays in the background. The episode opens with Maureen stepping aside to let Adam into the house. She smiles before shutting the door behind him.)5

Maureen (Fake concern): Is there something wrong…did you have a fight with Sadie?6

Adam: Why do instantly assume that… (Sighs) yeah we had a fight, look I just need a place to sleep…I don’t need to talk about it7

Maureen (Shakes head): You have to talk about it…you wouldn’t want it to…ruin things now would you, what has she done?8

Adam (Angrily): Oh for god’s sake…it was a fight between both of us…you always blame Sade for things…9

Maureen: Can you blame me, you turn up here at nearly midnight…she isn’t good for you dear10

(Adam puts his hands over his head.)11

Maureen: It’s okay we’ll talk about it over breakfast…12

(Adam turns around towards the stairs. Maureen grins to herself then switches off the outside light. The scene changes to see Josh sitting outside his locked apartment door. It opens and a guilty Janet appears.)13

Janet (Smiles): Josh…how long have you been sitting out here?14

(Josh huffs before getting up off the ground.)15

Josh: I’m gonna pack and get the next flight home…so you and your boyfriend can have your flat back16

(He walks past her into the apartment. She closes her eyes and sighs.)17

Janet: Did you get that job?18

Josh (While grabbing some of his stuff): Nope, not yet…I’ll go in when I get there19

Janet (Concerned): What if you don’t…you know…don’t get the job20

Josh: The boss is an old friend…I should be fine but if not…I’ll figure something out (laughs) at least I don‘t have to pack…see ya21

(He grabs his case and walks towards the door but Janet stands in his way.)22

Janet: You’re just leaving…like this23

Josh (Sighs): I’m moving on…it’s fine…I want to do this (Hugs her) bye Janet24

(At this moment Larry walks out of the bathroom with only a towel around his waist.)25

Josh (Rolls eyes): See you Larry…26

(He leaves the apartment as Janet shakes her head at Larry.)27

Larry: What happened dude?28

(She walks back into the bedroom as the scene changes to see a drunken Nick stumbles into his flat.)29

Nick (Coughs): Shit…30

(He looks over to his computer, which is switched on. He slowly walks over to it and sees he has a new e-mail. It reads ‘I think it’s safe to say we’re over’ and it is from Dennis.)31

Nick (Rubs eyes): Damn it…32

(He tries to reach his phone on the desk but falls over the chair. He stares up at the ceiling with a regretful look on his face. The scene changes to see Doug walking up the stairs after arguing with his mother. He hears her crying and smiles. He then hears the sound of his father driving off which leads to another smile.)33

Doug: Two down…another one to go…34

(The scene finally changes to see a tearful Sadie sitting in her and Adams apartment. She is glaring at her mobile phone. She exhales before switching it off. The opening scene ends and the theme song ‘All at Once’ by the Fray plays. The next scene starts with Adam lying awake in his grandparent’s spare bedroom. He closes his eyes and we flashback to three years previously. The song ‘Just Dance’ by Lady Gaga is playing in a busy nightclub. Adam is standing in the club talking with a group of friends.)35

Friend 1: Hey man…she’s been giving you the eye all night… (points) that one there36

(Adam turns around and sees Sadie staring back at him. She winks at him.)37

Friend: What do you think…hot isn’t she?38

Adam (Smiles): Yeah…she’s nice…do you think I should…39

Sadie (Interrupts): Sorry guys…can I steal your friend for a bit?40

(His gang of male friends nod as Sadie walks away with Adam beside her.)41

Adam (Awkwardly): Hey…I’m Adam42

Sadie (Smiles): I’m Sadie (looks at Adams drink) straight vodka... can you really handle that?43

Adam: I’d love to say yes but…it’s water44

Sadie (Giggles): You’re drinking water…in a nightclub?45

(Adam looks down at the ground in discomfort.)46

Sadie (Touches Adams shoulders): Maybe you’ll remember me in the morning then…47

(Adam smiles before we flashback to the present day. There is a knock on the door and Maureen walks into the room.)48

Maureen: Morning dear, sleep well?49

Adam (Sighs): Yeah I slept fine thanks…50

(She opens the curtains before sitting on the edge of his bed.)51

Maureen: Are you ready to…talk about things?52

Adam: I have nothing to talk about, it was a little fight…doesn’t everyone have them?53

Maureen (Tuts): Oh Adam…you’re a grown man, you can’t bury things under the bed for long…I want you to be happy54

Adam: I am happy, it was a misunderstanding…55

Maureen (Obviously annoyed): Fine but just remember that I warned you…I know you Adam, this engagement is just a phase or something like that…breakfast is in ten minutes, we’ll expect at the table in five56

(She leaves the room as Adam exhales. We now cut to Dennis sitting at the desk in his office. The song ‘Pony (It’s Ok)’ by Erin McCarley plays in the background. Someone knocks on the door and Nick suddenly appears.)57

Dennis (Hostile): What is it…this better be about work Nick…58

Nick (Sighs): There’s a problem outside…with one of the interviewees59

Dennis: I told the panel that I didn’t want to be involved…what’s wrong?60

Nick: One person is insisting on seeing you…61

Dennis (Annoyed): What kind of cheek…62

(He gets off his chair and charges towards the main office in annoyance.)63

Dennis: What’s the prob…?64

(He looks up to see Josh talking to his secretary.)65

Dennis (Surprised): Josh…you’re here already66

Josh (Smiles): Hi…I’m alright to be interviewed today, right?67

Dennis: Of course, come into my office…68

Josh: Thanks… (Gives the secretary an annoyed glare; sarcastically) thanks for all your help69

(Josh closes the office door behind him. Nick looks at the secretary in confusion.)70

Nick: Dennis knows him?71

Secretary (Shakes head): I guess so….he claimed he went to school with Mr. Pratt…I for one hope him and his sarcastic tone don’t get the job72

(Nick sighs before walking back to his own desk. Inside Dennis’s office Josh is now sitting in front of the desk.)73

Dennis (Still surprised): I only left you a message yesterday…this is a real shock74

Josh: Sorry I should’ve called or something…I got a late flight75

Dennis: Well do you have your CV with you?76

Josh: Of course…your secretary is pretty uptight you know (Smiles) reminds me of you in school… (Shakes head) Sorry here’s the CV77

(Dennis starts looking at the CV after ignoring Josh’s remark.)78

Dennis: Well…how have you been, what have been doing?79

Josh (Looks around): Not as much as you…your own office, a big paper editor…you’ve done well for yourself80

Dennis: Thank you, I’m a bit surprised…you didn’t complete your course in university…that isn’t a great start81

Josh (Sighs): Well I had to drop out for personal matters…I still know what I’m doing and I was hoping…82

Dennis (Awkward): I don’t know Josh…I’m not too fond of giving out personal favours…83

Josh (Nods): I know it’s asking a lot but you knew me in school…I was on the paper, I’m a good writer and you know that84

Dennis (Looks around in thought): Of course but a lot changes in seven years, this is a respected newspaper with respected reporters. You have had work experience in many papers…I’ll give you that. I’ll see what I can do85

Josh (Face lights up): Thank you so much Dennis…I really need this…so how’s life going with you?86

Dennis: Good, very good…I’m got my own apartment…and this fantastic job. I couldn’t be better…you?87

Josh: Yeah I’m good too…went through some things but…88

(Outside in the main offices Nick is staring up at Dennis’s office when he comes out with Josh. They continue talking. His co-worker Ruth approaches him.)89

Ruth (Curious): Oh my god…that was drama last night, is everything okay with…you know…you and the boss?90

Nick (Sighs): I have to finish this Ruth…I can’t talk91

Ruth (Puts hands over mouth): He broke up with you…that’s a little… (Chuckles) well Dennis like…92

(Nick looks at her in annoyance.)93

Ruth: Sorry…well I’m rooting for you two, I mean what an interesting couple…94

(She runs off to the other workers desks and starts giving them the gossip. Meanwhile Dennis says goodbye to Josh and goes back in his office. Just as Josh passes his desk Nick stops him.)95

Nick: Excuse me…are you the new reporter then?96

Josh: Well I hope so…we’ll have to see…I’m Josh Lowell97

(They shake hands.)98

Nick: I’m Nick…Dennis’s… (Hesitates) top reporter99

Josh: Hopefully we’ll be co-workers soon… (He goes to leave) was there something…else?100

Nick: Well…I was just interested because it seemed like you knew Dennis…101

Josh: Oh yeah I do, we went to school together…I guess you could say we were friends…kind of102

(He laughs while Nick now looks more interested.)103

Nick: That’s great; I look forward to hearing some embarrassing stories…104

Josh (Smiles): Nice meeting you, bye105

(Josh walks into the lift before the doors close. The scene ends. The next scene begins with Doug and his therapist Max in a session. The song ‘Brighter Than Sunshine’ by Aqualung plays in the background.)106

Doug (Smiles): I’m just so happy these days…I feel like it’s all getting better107

Max (Sceptical): This is a huge change Doug…what’s happened that has changed your attitude?108

Doug: My parents…I just love them so much now, I know it wasn’t their fault…I know that now, isn’t that wonderful?109

Max: Of course it is…but this is very sudden, you must understand my second thoughts about ending your sessions110

(A look of anger appears on Doug’s face but he quickly smiles to hide this feeling.)111

Doug: Yes I do but it’s not needed…I’m healthy, I’ve just been depressed…people get depressed all the time112

Max: So you haven’t felt sad, lonely…or suicidal at all lately, not at all?113

Doug: Don’t be stupid…I’ve never felt suicidal…I was just interested…in the other side…the other side of life114

Max: And your parents…they’re happy with your behaviour…you’re getting on well with them?115

Doug (Grins): Oh they’re just thrilled with my change…it’s great116

(With these words we see Kerry sitting in the kitchen back at home with a cigarette in her hand. The backdoor opens and Donald appears looking very glum.)117

Kerry (Sighs): You’ve come back then…118

Donald: I just couldn’t take it Kerry, he was scheming…to get back at me for something I’ve not done…how can he blame us for all of this?119

Kerry (Puffs her cigarette): He’s gone Donald…Doug isn’t with us any more…I don’t think the therapy is working anymore…we need more permanent care120

Donald (Exhales): I agree completely…we’ll go and see Max, he’ll understand121

(Donald puts his hand on Kerry’s shoulder and they look at each other in dismay. The scene changes to see a glum looking Sadie sitting on a sofa in her and Adams apartment. Her friend Natalie hands her a cup of tea and sits down beside her.)122

Natalie: Look you need to think of all the good things…don’t let this fight get to you, he’ll be back soon…I’m sure of it123

Sadie (Smiles): There are lot of good things…I remember the second time I saw him…that song from Juno was playing in the supermarket124

(With this we flashback to three years previously, the song ‘All I Want Is You’ by Barry Louis Polisar is playing in the background. Sadie is walking down an aisle in the local supermarket. She has a basket in one hand and is holding her mobile phone with the other.)125

Sadie (On phone): Nat…I don’t know why I’m doing your shopping…you could have at least done a list…okay, okay126

(Sadie looks up to see Adam standing in front of shelves full of chocolate.)127

Sadie (Shocked): Oh my god Nat…I gotta go128

(She hangs up and drops her phone in the basket. She then fixes her hair before approaching Adam.)129

Adam (To himself): That’s 80...I’ve had…130

Sadie (Gulps): Hi…it’s you…Adam right?131

(Adam turns around in surprise, he looks quite flustered.)132

Sadie (Laughs): Counting calories?133

Adam: Actually…yeah134

Sadie (Coughs): Oh…so you remember me don’t you…from that night at the club?135

Adam (Nods): Of course I do…Sadie…that’s your name136

Sadie (Face lights up): Yeah that’s it…that was fun… (laughs awkwardly) sorry about running off…I was a bit embarrassed137

Adam: Nah…it’s fine… (Puts the chocolate bar back) I was just looking…you know for a friend138

Sadie (Giggles): Yeah…sure you were, tell you what…get the chocolate bar and I’ll help you…burn a few calories139

(Adam smiles before quickly grabbing the chocolate bar back from the shelf. They walk off towards the checkouts. We then see them in bed together; Sadie smiles before cuddling up to a happy looking Adam.)140

Sadie (Grins): So what do you think about…an actual date?141

Adam (Sighs): Do we have to?142

(They both starting laughing and then Adam quickly kisses Sadie.)143

Adam: I’d like that…what about tonight?144

(They both smile as we flashback to the present day. Natalie drinks some of her tea.)145

Natalie: See…that’s a great story for your kids one day…146

Sadie (Sighs): But I didn’t trust him…it wasn’t fair…147

Natalie: You know what, he loves you…otherwise he wouldn’t have proposed…148

(Sadie exhales and picks up her cup. The scene changes to see Dennis walking through the main offices at work. The song ‘Better Things’ by Passion Pit plays in the background. All of the employees keep staring at him with smirks on their faces. A woman suddenly jumps in front of him. She is middle-aged woman with frizzy red hair.)149

Eve (Grins): Oh my god…Den…Mr. Pratt…it’s an honour150

Dennis: Oh…hello…and you are?151

Eve (Puts out hand): A potential reporter who’s just finished her interview…I just couldn’t wait to see meet you; your articles are just fantastic152

Dennis (Flattered): Oh thank you very much Ms.?153

Eve: Oh call me Eve…hopefully I’ll be working with you…I know this might be pushing my luck but…could we do lunch?154

Dennis (Shakes head): Oh I don’t think so… (Sees Nick looking at him longingly) alright, we can have a coffee or something…Eve. I’ll just get my jacket from my office…155

(Eve gives him a big grin as he walks into his office. A desperate looking Nick runs into the room after him.)156

Nick: Please Dennis, can we just talk?157

Dennis (Annoyed): I would rather go and see my father158

Nick (Offended): Oh that’s real great…thanks for that159

Dennis: I didn’t think we were working in the first place…this display of distrust…just was it for me160

Nick (Puts hands over his head): Please can we just do lunch…I’m so sorry…I know you didn’t want people to know161

Dennis (Tilts head): People to know what?162

Nick (Sighs): Don’t be stupid…don’t go back into the closet163

Dennis: Why would I go into a closet? That’s such a weird thing to say Nick, don’t you have a report to finish…I’m going to lunch with a (Looks around in thought) friend164

(Dennis walks out of the office without even looking at Nick. Ruth walks into the room after he leaves.)165

Ruth (Sighs): I couldn’t help but over here…166

Nick (Rolls eyes): Oh you just happened to be at the door did you Ruth?167

Ruth: No I was eavesdropping…so is he gay or not?168

Nick (Loudly): Yes he’s gay…169

(In the main office everyone turns to look at Nick including Dennis who now looks more horrified than ever.)170

Dennis (To Eve): Let’s go…now171

(He and Eve quickly leave the office while Nick gasps in annoyance at himself. The scene cuts to see Dennis and Eve sitting in a coffee shop. The song ‘Running on Sunshine‘ by Jesus Jackson plays in the background.)172

Eve (Smiles): Oh I loved your article about ‘How to be a writer’ that was such a good read…very inspiring173

Dennis: I loved writing that piece, you seem so ideal for the position…I’ll definitely see what I can do about the panel…in fact I’ll make sure of it174

Eve: Well…tell me about yourself…(Shakes head) I’m sorry…was that inappropriate?175

Dennis (Nods): Well it’s not the end of the world…it’s nice to have a fan. I became the editor three years ago, it’s been great ever since176

Eve (Smiles): You’re exactly how you’re…(Sighs) exactly how I pictured you being, you’d be a great boss177

(Josh suddenly passes the window of the place and looks inside in dismay. He quickly goes inside.)178

Josh (Smiles): Dennis…I was just looking at apartments and there you are…with…Eve179

Eve: Hello…180

Dennis (Confused): You know each other?181

Josh: Oh no…we met this morning…at the interviews182

Eve (Nods): Yes a very nice boy…(Sighs) not as qualified though183

(Josh gives her an annoyed look so she starts laughing.)184

Eve: Joke, joke…we know you’ll choose the right reporter185

Dennis (Uncomfortable): You know what…I better be off, deadlines to meet…goodbye Eve, Josh186

(He rushes out of the coffee shop leaving Josh to sit at the table with Eve.)187

Josh: Sorry…but I think I’ll be getting the job…I’m his old friend188

Eve (Annoyed): Listen here…we have a lot in common, me and Dennis…I think I’ll be getting the position189

Josh (Smirks): We’ll see…190

(The scene ends. The next scene starts with Doug sitting in front of his therapist Max.)191

Max (Nods): Well all I have to do is get a report from your parents and we can start thinking about ending your sessions at some point, not immediately192

Doug: Well…it’s the money I’m worrying about, my parents are working so much to let me go here…it’s not fair is it?193

(Max look down at a file as Doug looks at him impatiently.)194

Max: Doug I think…195

(There is a knock at the door and Doug’s parents appear looking down but focused.)196

Doug (Shocked): What…why are you two here?197

Max (Shakes head): It’s fine Doug…they’re more than welcome198

Donald: We’ve actually come to talk to you about…maybe we should talk in private199

Kerry: It won’t take long…can you just go outside for a minute sweetheart? There’s a nurse waiting for you outside200

(Doug slowly gets up and leaves the room looking very distracted.)201

Max: What seems to be the problem?202

Donald (Sighs): We want to thank you for your help but enough is enough…me and Kerry want to take this further203

Max (Puzzled): Further? There hasn’t been any developments, good ones that is?204

Kerry (Sighs sadly): Not at all…one minute he’s distant the next he’s like a toddler again…just wanting attention, he isn’t aware of time or anything…it’s too serious for just you to take care of205

Max (Nods): I’m sorry but I’m quite surprised, Doug has obviously been lying to me this morning. Of course…are you thinking of a mental facility?206

Donald: Yes we’ve been looking through certain brochures…207

(As the conversation continues we see Doug listening in from outside the door. He goes completely pale and quickly runs off towards the main exit. The nurse meant to be with him is chatting to a friend nearby. We see him get into a taxi looking panicked.)208

Taxi driver: Where to young man?209

Doug: Away, away, just away…210

(The driver looks at him in confusion and drives around the corner. The scene changes go see Adam sitting at the kitchen table in his grandparent’s house looking around in thought. He sighs as we flashback to one year previously. Adam storms into his and Sadie’s apartment in anger. Sadie quickly follows him. The song ‘Black Tables’ by Other Lives plays in the background.)211

Adam (Angrily): How can you say such crap…you know it’s not true…212

Sadie: How do I? You never say it…it’s always a quick peck on the cheek and out the door…isn’t your girlfriend supposed to come first Adam?213

Adam: I love my work, you know that…but I love you more…that obviously isn’t clear enough…as you keep on hinting at214

Sadie (Huffs): Oh I’m so sorry…should I just let days go by while you ignore me?215

Adam (Waves arms): I don’t freaking ignore you…stop making it out like I treat you badly216

Sadie: You are just impossible to read Adam…one minute you’re happy…the next you’re depressed for some ridiculous reason…like not making a sale217

Adam: What is it you want…me to quit work…spend all my time with you?218

Sadie (Angrily): I want you to help me…my father is dying and you show no interest, you don’t even seem to care…don’t you think that hurts…maybe just a little bit?219

Adam (Sigh): I don’t mean to be…I want to help you but I can’t, I don’t know what to say220

Sadie (Looks around in thought): Well maybe you should think of something…221

(She slams a magazine onto the floor and storms out of the apartment. Adam puts his hands over his head and inhales. We flashback to the present day as Maureen enters the kitchen with shopping bags.)222

Maureen: Thinking about Sadie…come to any conclusions?223

Adam (Sighs): I don’t know if it was…(Shakes head) never mind…it doesn’t matter anymore224

Maureen (Coughs): Well if I was you I’d take some time…maybe think over things while being free of her…sorry I mean a relationship. What about that woman…from the coffee shop?225

Adam: What!?226

Maureen: The woman…you know the one you met with the other day, you told me about it…227

Adam (Puzzled): No I didn’t…I didn’t say anything about that to you, how did you…(disbelief) tell me you didn’t say anything to her…you said something to Sadie?228

Maureen (Defensively): I mentioned it and I was right…you like that woman and she most certainly likes you…I could tell229

(Adam stands up in annoyance and walks towards the door.)230

Adam: This is unbelievable…all of it, that you would think it…and she would, screw this…231

(He leaves the kitchen and we hear him charge up the stairs. Maureen puts the shopping bags down while shaking her head.)232

Maureen: Kids…233

(The scene ends. The next scene opens with Josh walking around in an empty apartment. A man appears to be showing him around. The song ‘Walnut Tree’ by Keane plays in the background.)234

Man: It’s not massive but it’ll be perfect for one person235

Josh (Nods): Yeah, I like it a lot…I’m just thinking if I should go into my savings account or not…236

Man: Oh you definitely should, places like this don’t come around too often237

Josh (Smiles): Yeah…you’re employed to say things like that238

(The apartment has a small living room, small kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Josh looks around in thought.)239

Josh (Sighs): I’ll go for it, I’ll take it as soon as I can240

Man (Pleased): Very good sir, if you’ll take my details and we can get you in here by…well whenever you want241

(They shake hands.)242

Josh: Let me get my chequebook…243

(A few minutes later the pair leave the house and the deal has been done. The man heads towards his car.)244

Man: It’s all yours, we’ll meet tomorrow to finalise things245

(He gets in his car and drives off. Josh looks at the flat and sighs in relief.)246

Voice: Excuse me…Josh?247

(Josh looks around to a voice that sounds familiar . In front of him are Doug’s parents, Kerry and Donald.)248

Josh (Shocked): Kerry…Donald…what are you doing here? How did you know I was here…?249

Kerry (Sighs): Please don’t panic…just here us out250

(A suspicious looking Josh frowns at them.)251

Donald: We passed you in the car earlier…we would really like to talk to you about certain things252

Josh (Sceptical): You mean talk about Doug…look it’s been seven years…I don’t know him anymore and I don’t care about his issues. Please don’t follow me again…253

(He turns around to walk off.)254

Kerry (Desperate): He’s gone missing, we saw you were back and thought…(sighs) thought maybe he went to find you255

Josh (Turns around): Well he hasn’t tried to find me…hopefully he never will now if you’ll excuse me…I have a flat to move into256

(As Josh walks off Kerry and Donald look at each other and sigh. The scene changes to see Dennis back in his office at work. The door opens and Eve appears once again.)257

Dennis (Surprised): Eve…what are you doing here? Is there a problem with your application…?258

Eve: Oh no…I just thought that I could get you to do something for me…in case I don’t get the job259

Dennis (Curious): Well…what is it?260

(Eve gets a newspaper from her bag and puts it on her desk.)261

Eve: This is this ‘how to be a writer’ article…could you sign it for me?262

Dennis: Oh…(Flustered) well I suppose it wouldn’t be against the rules…(Signs the paper) there you go Eve263

Eve (Smiles): It’s been such a pleasure meeting you, I just hope I can work for you soon264

Dennis: It was nice meeting you too Eve…265

(He walks her to the door and as she walks off he sees Nick talking to Julie at his desk. Julie looks up and notices Dennis looking at them. She says goodbye to Nick and walks towards Dennis’s office.)266

Dennis (Sighs): Look I’m working…this is no time for personal visits267

(He shuts the door behind her.)268

Julie (Confused): What are you talking about…?269

Dennis: What has he said to you? It’s all my fault, I don’t touch him…this is utter nonsense270

Julie: Are you talking about Nick, ya?271

Dennis: Oh don’t play stupid with me Julie…I know why you’re here…I’m not getting back together with him272

Julie (Puts hands over her mouth): Oh no, you broke up with Nick…why Dennis, why?273

Dennis (Gulps): You didn’t know, he didn’t tell you?274

Julie: No, this is awful ya…why did this happen?275

Dennis: I’m not sure what I want to be…and he betrayed my trust276

Julie (Shakes head): This isn’t one of those silly soap operas Dennis…it can’t have been that bad…277

Dennis (Snaps): I need to finish my work, I can’t get to the deadline with all these visits…goodbye Julie278

Julie: I’ve been trying to call all day, can you baby-sit tonight?279

(Dennis looks at her in annoyance.)280

Dennis: Fine…281

Julie: I was going to suggest you bring Nick but now that’d be inappropriate, ya?282

(Dennis just rolls his eyes, which prompts Julie to leave the office. He walks to his desk and looks at two files, one for Eve and the other for Josh. He stares at them in thought. The scene changes to see a dazed looking Doug sitting outside his old school. A teacher approaches him. The song ‘Driveway‘ by Great Northern plays in the background.)283

Teacher: Excuse me…you’ve been sitting here for nearly an hour…is there something wrong?284

Doug (Smiles): I’m just in my happy place, do you have one of them?285

Teacher: To be honest…it doesn’t look too great, you sitting outside a school…are you here for someone?286

Doug: Actually I was waiting for my friend Adam…but then I remembered he doesn’t like me anymore…so I thought I’d wait for Josh instead. Do you know where he is?287

Teacher (Sighs): Sorry I don’t know who that is…if you’re not here for someone then I think you should go…please288

(Doug gets up and slowly begins to walk off.)289

Doug: If you see Josh…tell him I’ll be in the park, waiting for him290

(The teacher looks at Doug with a puzzled look across his face. The scene flashes to Doug sitting on a swing in the park. A little girl with blond hair walks up to him.)291

Girl (Softly): Sorry Mr but when will you be finished with the swing?292

Doug: I don’t know…how long has it been…how many days?293

Girl: I’m sorry…I don’t understand…294

Doug: Since I last tried to hurt myself, can’t you remember for me?295

(The girl runs off in fear, her mother gives Doug an angry look and they leave the park. Doug closes his eyes and we flashback to when he and Josh were teenagers. They are walking through the same park.)296

Doug (Laughs): Let’s go on the swings…297

Josh: What? Are you six or something…298

(Doug runs up to the swing and sits on it.)299

Josh: Okay then…for a little while300

Doug: It feels like you can fly…it’s really cool, don’t you think?301

(Josh sits on the swing next to him with a bemused look on his face.)302

Josh (Smiles): You’re mental…303

Doug: Maybe304

(We flashback to the present day and a depressed looking Doug stares up at the sky.)305

Doug: I can’t go back to them, they want to send me away…306

Josh (Concerned): Who does?307

(Doug’s face lights up and he gets up from the swing.)308

Doug: Josh…you came309

(He shakes his head and instead of Josh is a little boy.)310

Boy (Curiously): Who wants to send you away?311

(Doug looks at him in uncertainty and runs off. The little boy laughs before jumping on the swing. The scene ends. The next scene starts with Sadie in her and Adams apartment alone. We now flashback to about 4 months ago. The song ’Still Alright’ by Adam Merrin plays in the background. A distraught looking Sadie is sitting on the sofa. The sound of the door unlocking can be heard and Adam appears with a briefcase in his hand.)312

Adam (Sighs): Sadie…I’m home313

(She doesn’t respond to him. He drops his briefcase and slowly walks to sit down next to her.)314

Adam: Sadie you need to move, you have to talk…you can’t stay like this315

(Once again she doesn’t respond to Adams presence. She doesn’t even seem to notice that he’s there.)316

Adam (Puts his hand on her lap): I’m so sorry, I wish I could…(looks around in thought) I’m not an emotional person so I don’t know what this is like…in fact it’s never happened to me…I’m sorry that your father died…I know it’s killing you but I want to help you317

(A tearful Sadie looks at Adam in sadness. Adam grabs her hand and inhales.)318

Adam: You are the strongest, nicest…most caring person I’ve met in my entire life and I refuse to let you be like this…marry me319

Sadie (Shocked): What!?320

Adam (Smiles): Please…marry me Sadie, will you marry me? I need you…321

(Sadie once again bursts into tears but the word ‘Yes’ comes out of her mouth. They embrace and Sadie smiles at Adam.)322

Sadie: Thank you Adam (Wipes tears out of her eyes) I miss him so much…323

(Adam hugs her as we flashback to the present day. A tear rolls down Sadie’s cheek. She quickly jumps up from her chair and grabs the car keys. She races out of the apartment. The scene changes to see Josh staring at a familiar place, the park where Doug was sitting at earlier. It is nearly dark now. He sees Doug sitting at the swing. He walks away and later we see him approaching Doug’s house. The door opens and Kerry appears.)324

Kerry (Stunned): Josh you…325

Josh (Sighs): I know where he is…this is all I’m helping you with…he’s at the school park, you know the one326

(He turns around and walks away. Kerry charges into the house and finds Donald.)327

Donald: Who was it?328

Kerry (Relief): I know where he is Donald…we can find him329

(Inside his car Josh turns in his phone and realises he has a voice message.)330

Dennis (Voice message): Hello Josh, look I’m sorry to say but you haven’t got the job, you’re just not qualified enough, sorry if you came all this way just for this opportunity. Sorry again, Dennis.331

(Josh closes his phone and looks around in daze. He sighs before driving off. At Dennis’s office he is just leaving when he bumps into Nick.)332

Nick: You alright?333

Dennis (Sighs): No I just…chose our new reporter334

Nick: Isn’t that a good thing, when does Josh start?335

Dennis: I didn’t give it to Josh, I just broke the news that he didn’t get it…336

Nick (Awkwardly): Oh…sorry that must’ve been hard…at least you have a better call next for the one who got the job337

Dennis: I’ll give her the good news tomorrow338

(He turns around to go to his car.)339

Nick: At least we’re speaking…can’t you just forgive me, you know I was drunk?340

Dennis (Sighs): See you in the morning Nick, remember the deadline for your report341

(The ending montage of scenes begins here with the song ‘A Mirror Without’ by Royal Wood playing in the background. Dennis gets in his car and drives off. Nick looks on in regret. We see Doug sitting on the swing when his parents suddenly pull up outside the park. He looks confused.)342

Doug: They’re sending me away…343

(We see Josh getting out of his car and walking towards his new flat. He jumps when Eve suddenly appears from behind the wall.)344

Josh: Eve…it’s pretty late you know…what are you doing here?345

Eve (Looks around): I need this job, are you listening to me? I need it more than you know… so here (She hands him an envelope) you know what I’m trying to say346

Josh (Shocked): But Eve I…347

Eve (Shakes head): Just accept this348

(Eve dashes off around the corner before Josh can stop her. Josh opens the envelope. He is now holding a cheque for 500,000. He looks at it in shock.)349

Josh (Disbelief; to himself): What the hell?350

(We see Sadie running up to Maureen’s front door. She knocks twice before the door opens and Maureen appears.)351

Sadie (Firm): Tell him I’m here…this isn’t over, I won’t let it be352

Maureen (Folds arms): I’m sorry…I presumed he’d already gone back to you…he left a few hours ago353

Sadie: What do you mean…where did he go?354

Maureen (Begins to shut the door): I have no idea…355

(Maureen shuts the door. Sadie looks around with her hands over her head. Finally we see Adam sitting on a sofa, a little girl with a doll runs past him. Suddenly Alley appears from what seems to be her kitchen with two glasses of wine. She sits down next to Adam and looks at him in curiosity.)356

Alley (Smiles): Now why did you come all this way to see me…?357

(The screen starts to fade out as the pair start talking. The episode ends.)

Adding fuel to the fire...playing Grandmothers footsteps

An exciting, tension building episode that builds nicely. Has it really been 6 months since the last episode? Doesn't feel like it...anyway characters are developing nicely here without any overly dramatic scenes.

I think Adam's storyline was my favorite here, I liked the use of flashbacks, though found the marriage proposal bit a little confusing -for a bit I thought that was in the present, which obviously didn't fit with the rest- but that's probably because I haven't read this for ages. So he tells Grandma where to go BUT leaves to see oldskool Alley. Why? Hmmm...I don't think it's for romance; she has a kid for a start..which would be awkward. Also he is engaged, and just leaving Sade would be a little shitty, to say the least. As well as completely -perhaps unknowingly- playing into dear old Nan's hands. Poor Sadie...sure to be some fiery endings there.

Elsewhere, Dennis' life is a mess, as is Joshs...nice to see Julie making a return to interfere. Josh, without a job, in contact again with Doug, like a time warp. Can he drag creepy guy from the edge? Or will he collapse with him down the drainhole of insanity. Oh yeah, he has 500k from Eve...but is probably too moralistic to accept it. Plus, why would a reporter have that cash? Why -if she has that sort of cash- does she want a job? Odd...maybe she's a drug dealer/pop star...

So yeah, a good return that turns up the pressure nicely without revealing much.

  • It's reallly great, it's going perfectly, I like how Doug has flash backs, and then gets depressed, and more mental when he thinks about everyone. Keep up the good work :]

Much excellence with the flashbacks! They really added depth to the episode, and I didn't get confused (always nice).

The job interviews section was really interesting. It's a tossup between those sections and the Doug sections which would be my favorites. They were all excellent! even though you took 6 months off, I think you came back with a more mature voice in this episode. I can really see it.

p16 Josh says he will pack, but in p32 he says he doesn't have to

p203 Kerry and I instead of me and Kerry

p331 not sure he'd really say his name at the end. Sounds like he's reading from a letter he wrote.

OMG surprise ending!! Whee! That's gonna muck things up. Grandma will be so pleeeeeeased.
