3~ Chapter One: Trepidation (Part Two) ~4
________________________________________________________________________5
There was some light shining through the opening of the den. The symphony outside had finally ended. Even though, I have to admit that there was a small part of me wanting have an encore.6
I crawled through the opening to meet the air and it was very damp with a sticky feeling to it. David was just only a mere few feet away from me looking at the sky. I looked up as well. The grayness was being sliced by a golden ray of faint light.7
"Aw, man! I could've taken that picture!" Typical of him to say but, I'd have to agree though. He could've if only the camera wasn't busted.8
He turned his body to face me. "Hey, you think we can go home now?"9
Achoo! *sniff* *sniff*10
"It's not like we're going anywhere else." I let him lead the way. He knew his way back home and I'd like to follow behind him to avoid any incoming sneezes. The least thing I want right now is for me to get ill as well. From behind I still saw him shaking from the cold as though it was winter right now. I asked if he were cold but, he answered no. Obviously, he was lying. And now, I believe he's humming.11
"Could you stop humming?" It was unclear but, I still heard it. The melody was like the tunes to an irritable kid song like The Wheels on the Bus or Itsy-Bitsy Spider . But, deep down I actually kinda enjoyed it and I didn't know why. And now he was taking it way too far and I was starting to get peeved. "David, please, stop humming. You can hum all you want when we get back home!"12
He abruptly stopped and I was greatly relieved to welcome in the silence again but, not only had the humming halted but, his movements as well.13
"Thanks...Hey, why'd you stop? I mean walking-why'd you stopped walking? Something wrong?" 14
His face was concentrating on something to the right of us. I looked to see what caused him to stop in place and beyond the few trees in our view were the shores that belonged to a sea. I didn't really see anything there worth being in a picture so, what was he really staring at? I looked harder. On the other side, in the distant, was another land. Mom told us that all of our great grandparents used to live on that land years ago ( years ago). I believed she said large quakes separated that piece of land from the rest so, now it's like a large chunk of Earth floating there surrounded by sea water. I'd love to call it an island but, from this point of view it just looks like an outstretched land on the other side. There were no land routes here that led to that it, just like an island, so the only ways of ever going over there was having transportation over water. Could it be that he was trying to look through to the "island?" There was nothing there but tall trees on the perimeter and from what mom said there were ruins of our abandoned town in the center of it. I started to stare more into the island to see if maybe I can see any parts of a building but, only saw darkness from the multiple shades of trees. Then, suddenly I felt a sort of weak allure coming from it. It wasn't unusual though. I've always wondered what it was like over here and when I've asked dad if we could visit the old "island" one day he astoundingly answered no with a serious tone in voice.15
Snap. Snap.16
What was that? My eyes went to see where David was but, he was running towards the direction of the sea!17
"David? Wait! David, come back!" He didn't listen even though I have said those words ever so clearly. I ran after him and he was surprisingly fast. Usually, I outran him when we had races but, today he has remarkably fast. I listened to my breath quicken and the squish of the noises beneath me as the wind brushed against my face. The air was too damp that it reduced my regular speed of running. Strangely it had no effect on David. I dodged any branches that tried to block my way but, was unsuccessful with one. It whipped my face just like the wind did only leaving wet marks dripping down my face. I wiped off the remains of the storm off my face and ignored the sting that jolted on my face.18
Why am I being beaten by a kid?19
"David! David, wait! Hey! " Again, it seemed like no words had reached the little boys ears. He kept running as though it was a marathon that I had no idea of. He finally reached the sand of the sea's shore. No. He was going to go into the water. "David, don't go in the water! David! DAVID!" The squishing noises have stopped but, were replaced with the soft sounds of the sand mixed in with the rain. It was slowing me down but, as I saw David nearing the waters I found myself forwarding my back down a bit and accelerating. He was heading for the water, I know it. I can't let him. I can't!20
And I won't.21
He was now just a mere few feet in front of me and luckily, the tail of my jacket, which he wore, was flapping wildly behind him and I extended my hand for the chance to grab it. And I did.22
He was about to fall back but, I released my grip from the tail of the jacket and placed both my hands on his shoulders and gave him a minor push forward. I turned him around and shook him hard.23
"What were you thinking, David!? Was your head not screwed on tightly to see where you where going!? You could've gone in there David! You could have- "24
His face.25
It was full of confusion and shock. His eyes were wide with bewilderment. I shouldn't have yelled at him. I shouldn't have. I've never scolded him like this before. Sure, sometimes I'd yell at him but, not like this. Not this severely. There were enough problems already in our hands and I'm only making it worst. But, none of this would've happen if he'd stop. It reality, it was his fault. He was foolish enough in attempting to try whatever he was going to do that could've taken away his life. But, still I shouldn't have done this.26
"What!? What did I do!? Why are you yelling at me!?" He was still in shock.27
I released my hands from his shoulder. He doesn't...remember? Not the chase or anything? I saw innocence in his eyes as though he really didn't know.28
I tried to regain my composure, "...Don't you remember? You were just about to run into the sea." He looked behind him and saw that if he took just a few more steps he would've have met the lips of the sea which would have opened up to swallow him down into its mortal depths. He promptly faced me again his eyes an inch wider than before and his breath was quickening.29
"What!? I wouldn't do that!? Chris, I wouldn't have, I swear!"30
"I know you wouldn't..."31
He gently took my arm and shook it. "I want to go home now."32
"So do I."33
We made our way up the sandy slope to reach the forested area. David was shaking like a leaf now and I wasn't sure whether he was still cold or was it from something else?34
I looked back to examined the place that we were. All I saw were only miles of sand and wait, a boat? In the distant there was what seemed to be a washed up boat on our shores. I never saw that there? Very peculiar. Then, I fixed my gaze on the "island" on the other side of the sea. It stood in dismal and solitary. The trees that surrounded the boundaries of it were tall, dark, and gloomy towers that stared back with a sort of sorrowfulness. But, something gray risen above the head of the treetops. It was smoke. Smoke? There were no large amounts of spreading orange or red destruction seen below in the darkness of the forest so, it wasn't a forest fire. But, what had caused that gray fume? Was it possible that someone still lived there? The allurement of the land was suddenly growing more prominent and it was strangely beckoning me. I looked away to discard the feeling but, I still felt it there. It whispered something inarticulate but, clear into my ears. I walked faster and focused on just getting home. I tried to brush away this feeling. I tried.35
But, I knew I was going to take that boat to the other side.36
Soon.37
