In the world of teen relationships, matters of love are the ones that cause the most pain. When a girl gets her heart-broken, her friends immediately surround her with hugs and words of sympathy, with phrases like “he's such a loser....doesn't know what he's lost.....you can do so much better than him....there's plenty more fish in the sea” being thrown around like fairy dust. Every girl forgets the time when she was sat crying over a boy, and that these words don't make an impact, they don't help; just being there does.1
I discovered that the best cure is a night of girl-pampering, hugs, and the hollywood heart-throbs who portray our idea of a perfect man. When you consider this, its easy to understand why we can't find 'Mr Right' – he's fictional. 2
“There's plenty more fish in the sea” is a phrase used more times than anyone would care to admit, but the fact is that we are the fish, and the boys have the nets. It doesn't matter how independent the girl might seem. It doesn't matter how many times she says “I'll never let a boy do that to me” when watching her friend cry her eyes out. We all get caught up in the nets at some point or other. 3
At this point, we're so swept off our feet by the flattery and attention that we don't notice our friends are still in the sea. We don't notice that its hard to breathe out of water. We've convinced ourselves that this boy will last. That he won't hurt you like the others. They all say that at first. I don't even think its their fault. Most of the time, they don't want to hurt us as badly as we don't want to get hurt. It just happens that way. We get hurt, and thrown back into the sea; we're a bit smarter, a bit more sceptical – damaged goods. 4
I'll admit, this doesn't happen every single time. Some girls do get their fairytale endings. Not us though. Me and my friends that is. At least, not yet. You see, this is our story. And, well, it's not finished yet. We're still here. Still living and loving, coping with teenage drama and dilemmas – using rules to help us through. You don't know me yet, although you will, but trust me - stick to The Rules, because your life does depend on it.5
The Rules6
Rule number 1) Friends come before guys every time, but will always be there for each other anyway.7
Rule number 2) Ex-boyfriends are off-limits until a suitable period of time has passed (e.g three months).8
Rule number 3) If a guy wants to see you again, he'll find a way.9
Rule number 4) Ex's can't be friends after the split.10
Rule number 5) If the guy seems perfect, he's usually not.11
Rule number 6) What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger.12
Rule number 7) You're only alive if you're living.13
We didn't have these to help us, you see. We discovered them, one by one, as we grew up and made mistakes and learnt from them, and we shared them with each other. So now, we're sharing them with you in the hope that we might be able to ..... well, help I suppose. 14
I know, I know, you're probably sat there (or standing) thinking, what a load of rubbish. In your defence, you don't know the stories behind The Rules. Maybe you ought to turn the page and get to know us a little better.15

Hey
I really liked reading this, mainly because it's so true, i've lost count of the number of girls night's we're had after break ups.
I think that a name creates someones personality so maybe figure out what there charateristics are before naming them.
Hope to read more soon. x

The writing was brilliant, and I would love to read more. This is so down-to-earth and inspiring.
I think they should be innocent names...
Hannah, Kimber, Lia

That was pretty good.
I must disagree with one rule, though; ex's can be friends....
Namewise, what are 'the girls' like? Maybe a quiet, kind little Helen; a smart, matter-of-factly Gretel or Gretchen; a bubbly, caring Jessie or Jessica; and a beautiful, mysterious Kay. It really depends on what you're looking for.

This seems like the start of a very readable book.
name wise, what about Isabella? Could be shortened to Izzy or Bella... Or Clover. That's actualy my favourite girl's name atm.
Good luck and keep writing, I'd like to see what happens next.

I liked this passage, it flowed well and it seemed like a good beginning for a high school drama-esque type of story. Hope you keep it going, this seems to be the start of something fun.

This is really good. You describe everything really well. Mmm, now you need help with names... Let's see. My favourite name is Emily and maybe one of the characters could be called Emily. How many girls names do you need?

beginning: 5, language: 5, ending: 5, dialog: 5, characters: 5.

im thinking five or six, but trying to avoid names of girls im friends with lol (seeing as one or two events in our lives will probably sneak their way into the story) and i know two emilys unfortunately lol...any other ideas?

Alright. I'm a guy so this would not be a story for me. However, I do think that you're writing is fantastic. This was well written, and if you choose to continue with this I'm sure it'll be a great story. The only thing that I can thing to critique on would be the rules. Maybe take off a few cliche rules and add a few original ones. But at any rate keep up the good writing.

thanks :)
lol yeah its definitely chick lit
, thanks for the comment
thanks for pointing that out, I wasnt sure about some of the rules myself to be honest and I think they may get changed as the story develops because at the minute I don't know what's going to happen in the story.

This was really cute. Somehow kind of reminds me of the Traveling Pants series kind of mixed in with He's Just Not That Into You. Keep writing, this piece definitely made me smile.
