Marcus was running for all he was worth! He had gotten the CD and accomplished the first part of his mission but he was being chased down by a jet black SUV. As he ran, he suddenly heard a loud engine roaring over the hill that he had passed a minute ago.2
BANG! BANG!3
A man in the passenger side of the front seat was busily pulling the trigger on his gun as the vehicle roared down the small town road that was surrounded by the buildings lining either side of the street. 4
"Need to lose this Cretan" Marcus muttered to himself as bullets ricocheted off the pavement nearby his feet. Looking straight ahead, Marcus noticed an alleyway and without warning, dashed into it. "The construction zone will force him to take the alley" Marcus thought to himself. There were two ways to go at the end of the alleyway--left or right. 5
Without hesitation, Marcus went left and after several yards, cut left again around the building, stopped, and listened. He could hear the SUV rumbling through the alleyway so he ran and quickly peering 'round the corner of the other side of the building, he pulled out the keys to his apartment building. Jamming the apartment building key into the door, he wrestled with the key until it turned, unlocking the building. He then opened the door, locked it, closed it, and dashed up the stairs to his apartment.6
He unlocked his apartment door and slowly entered; something was cooking on the stove--he could smell it! The kitchen was just around the corner of the partition that separated it from the spacious living room. Stealthily walking around the partition, Marcus peered around the refrigerator that blocked his view of the stove. A brown-eyed brunette greeted his view and quite relieved, Marcus stepped into view.7
Startled, Angela jumped back from the skillet, frightened at his sudden appearance, terrifyingly looking at him, spatula raised.8
"Hmmm...that's an awfully strange reaction just for being a little startled. From her looks, she was probably expecting someone else" Marcus thought to himself. "You scared me!" she said, chuckling in comic relief. She came over and gave him a big hug and he held her for a few minutes, glancing quickly around the place. "TWO hamburgers? She NEVER eats that many hamburgers on a work day" he thought to himself. 9
"The hug she's giving me--it feels different," Marcus thought. "She's relieved. She's...glad that I'm here. At the same time, she has this...strange anxiety that keeps...coming and going." Marcus started to gently rub her back and head; the "strange anxiety" lessened--and although it wasn't as strong as before, it was still there.10
He felt her love for him get stronger and then...it reached its climax and he knew that she was going to say something...11
She looked up and said to him, "I'm glad I married the right man. You just...know how to calm me down and just...love me. That's what I love about you, Marcus" she said gently as she began to go back to flip the burgers. Waves of love flooded over both of them as they made their way to the stove; their love grew stronger though--and it became so strong that it not only successfully permeated them, it also joined the odor of the simmering burgers in the atmosphere. Marcus loved these moments with his wife; it always had a way of bonding them closer together. 12
"Mind if I...watch?" he said, sneaking his right arm around her waist.13
"JUST watch?" she asked flirtatiously, sliding her left hand around his waist.14
"You know how it is" he said while looking at her and after dreamily looking at the cooking burgers he meekly smiled, adding, "Just...savoring the moment." "Mmmm, yes; I know exactly what you mean" she cooed. They both dreamily gazed at the burgers cooking--and she would flip them over once in a while as they simply "savored the moment"...together. 15
Just tapping into that love that was lingering in the atmosphere.
