How have these chains that no-one sees
Made me invisible?
How have these lies I did not mean
Caged me behind walls?1
When did it all become too late
For cobwebbed time to fly?
When did my baby curls escape
Childhood’s silken tie?2
Why is it I no-longer care
If fights are lost or won?
Why is it I am not aware
Of the touch of sun?3
Who will light my dark and glitter
As only can a friend?
Who will hold me close and whisper
That it's not the end?

I wrote this just over a year ago. It was inspired by this picture, PoisoN by `Eireen of deviantART http://eireen.deviantart.com/art/PoisoN-14490624
This poem didn't turn out as I intended. Meant to be an optimistic, inspirational piece about a beam of sunlight entering a dark room, it quickly changed. When trying to describe individual elements of the picture, I began questioning how each became part of the scene and what effect each had on the scene. The more questions I had, the more I realised the answer was not in the picture. It was outside the frame. The answer was me. And you. And anyone who looks at this poor, lost, hopeless soul and feels compassion. If you feel the desire to reach into the dark picture frame and take her hand then you are the answer to every question. A friend can brighten any darkness far more than a watery beam of sunshine ever will. A friend to hold us and reassure us that this is not the end of life, but a new beginning.
