Ernie the Elephant.

Ernie the little elephant, sat crying on the mossy carpet of the forest floor, you see Ernie was afraid, and he was upset. Ernie was being teased by all the other little elephants at school. Now we all know how sad we feel when people call us names, and we all know how it feels to be afraid, we even know that when we are teased we should tell a teacher, or our mom or dad, or another grown up that we can trust. But you see elephants do not know these things, because elephants are not often afraid, and do not tease each other usually. So why was Ernie sad and afraid? You see Ernie had a phobia, which is a very strong fear of something, and Ernie's phobia was BIG EARS, now we all know that Elephants are born with BIG EARS, and so Ernie was scared of his ears, and his mom's ears and the ears of all the other elephants. But this was not why the other elephants at school teased Ernie, no that was because compared with all the other elephants, Ernie had tiny weeny ears, his ears were so small that they could have belonged to a spaniel!1

Ernie dried his tears when he saw his mom leading the herd to collect them from Eleschool, and bravely stood up, but he just couldn't help getting more and more scared the nearer the big elephants got, all poor Ernie could see were HUGE EARS coming towards him, and he gasped and fainted clear out onto the forest floor. Ernie's mom, wrapped her strong thick trunk around her youngest son, and carried him off to the wise weasel of the tree tops. "Weasel" she begged, "can you tell me what is wrong with my son, and how to make him better?"2

Now as we all know Weasels can be a bit wily and sly, and sensing a chance to get extra food, the weasel told Ernie's mother that he had a phobia of ears, and that the only way to cure Ernie would be to bring him for an ear rub every day for a month. Now the weasel charges an Acorn a day, and so he knew that instead of just one acorn, he could make himself 30 Acorns. Every day Ernie trotted off to the weasel instead of Eleschool, and the weasel rubbed his ears, and told him he was no longer afraid. But when Ernie was no better after 10 days, his mom knew she had to try something else. When all the other elephants were sleeping, she went and woke Ernie up and took him to the river, they sank into the warm water and played catch and dunk. After a little while Ernie's mom showed him how to flap his ears so that he could glide through the water like he was skating. Ernie loved this new game, and was flapping like a professional very quickly. Ernie's mom then led him out of the water, and gently used her GREAT BIG EARS to dry Ernie, and he giggled and wriggled as the Ears tickled. Ernie was never scared of ears again after that day, and he always told a grown up after that if he was teased or scared, and the good thing was that all the ear rubs from the weasel, had stretched Ernie's ears, and he proudly shook them at his classmates on his first day back at school.3

A typo on the third to last line.

It's an excellent children's story which must prove that I'm a big kid because I enjoyed it too. The story is told clearly and with better command than most stories on this site.

Hi Ju, thanks for reading this and commenting, I never thought about it till you said, but no I guess most childrens stories don't deal with phobias. Some of the other entries to this were fab. How are you? Kxx

Awww… This had the perfect ending!! A happy, positive, everything turned out okay ending which is just the way children’s stories always end. I really like what you have done here. This is great. You help my attention from beginning to end. I would suggest a little polishing here and there but only because I truly did enjoy this. It has a lot of merit for a children’s tale. Thank you for entering my contest and good luck!
