The Mouse and the Cat

It was only yesterday when the mouse and the cat ran to the bakery to buy the biggest, most delicious Birthday cake for Granny. 'I hope they sell strawberry shortcake,' said Miss Purr, 'or cheesecake! Cheesecake is awesome too!' 'Now that's a fact,' said the mouse, - who's name is in fact Mr. Fact, because he always confirms everything he agrees on with: 'That's a fact.' 'Cheesecake is indeed awfully good. Let's see if the baker has some today.'1

When they entered the store, Miss Purr started purring and drooling all over the display, getting very excited over all the different kind of cake displayed. 2

'Miaow,' she mewed, which only meant she was completely and utterly confused by the diversity of pastry shown and undoubtedly it would take Miss Purr more time than available to make a choice. 'Miaow,' she mewed again, 'What shall we buy? They're all delicious!'3

'That's a fact, Miss Purr,' said Mr. Fact, 'but we must make a choice before the store closes, so why not stick to cheesecake?' 4

'But cheesecake alone is definitely not enough for our Granny,' Miss Purr purred, 'No, what we need is something grand! Something like a wedding cake - five stories up! Please Mr. Baker, can it be ready by tomorrow morning?'5

'I'm truly sorry Missy,' the Baker replied, 'but I'm too busy. I'm already working half the night, but if you like, you can stay here and make it yourself,' which was, if you think about it, a most generous offer.6

'Please... can we please... purretty please?' Miss Purr begged, giving Mr. Fact one of her famous (ever so kindly meant) head-pushes, forcing him to the ground.7

'Oh, OK Miss Purr! I surrender! This is going to be the best cake ever and that's a fact!'8

So they worked all night. They mixed and blended - stirred and kneaded - whipped cream and decorated every cake with icing or fresh fruit. And when they were done it was indeed the best cake ever, I dare say magical!9

Since the cake didn't fit into the Baker's van, our friends walked home with their enormous cake, coaxing many 'Ohhs' and 'Ahhs' from passers-by, while Miss Purr hissed: 'Pleasssse sssstep asssside!' and they were glad to finally reach their door. 'Home at last and that's a fact,' said Mr. Fact and then he fell... and the cake right on top of him!10

Miss Purr, who was in shock, quickly dug Mr. Fact out and gave him a thorough wash. No, nothing like a lick and a promise, the cake tasted far too good for that! 11

Unfortunately the cake was completely ruined and they explained it all to Granny the next day with tears in their eyes, but you know what Granny said? 12

'Since you two, Miss Purr and Mr. Fact, worked so hard and closely on this cake, it can never be anything but the PurrFact Birthday cake, so thank you children. You've given me a very special Birthday gift and that's a fact!'13
