Grandpa’s Knee (Revised)

Grandpa’s Knee1

Once upon a time in the land called Grandpa’s Knee, where only little boys’ and girls’ toys and animals could talk and see, lived “Hush” the puppy and “Sleep” the mother cat, and all kinds of things, imaginary. On Grandpa’s Knee it was snug and warm and little ones knew they would come to no harm for they were always wrapped in arms so strong and the Sandman never stayed away for long. Hush the puppy was as cute as could be with his white fury coat and his black patches for all to see. He was such a clever puppy for he would stand and widdle in Missy’s potty trainer when he went to the loo, now wasn’t that a clever thing to do? 2

He could roll and tumble over the floor and his little short legs would tangle with his big floppy ears and he would trip over them and hit his head on the door. His belly was round like a big basket ball, all pink and soft and not fury at all. He would run and bark at something you could not see, and try and bite off his tail and being so fat he would fall, “A” over “T”. When Grandma played the organ he would sing along but not in tune for he never knew the song. 3

Sleep the mother cat was different again with long silky fur of many colours, white, black, ginger and tan. She thought that she was a princess and would teach Hush to wash his face and behind his ears in a very cat like fashion. She would sit on Grandpa’s shoulder where Hush could not reach and purr and poke out her tongue at Hush, and his face would turn blue at her cheek. 4

When day was done and all was quiet and time to say their bedtime prayers, the little children would snuggle up on the land of Grandpa’s Knee and the Sandman would come and sprinkle his special stardust to help them sleep.5

Gramps would then say, “Hush now go to Sleep, it is time you went to bed too, for the Sandman will be on his way very soon.” 6

Hush would curl up in a little fat ball between Sleep’s legs and close his little puppy eyes, and dream of all the wondrous things he would do when he was as big like mother cat.7

And all would be safe and warm in the land of Grandpa’s Knee.

This was tremendously sweet, just the kind of story that little ones would love to hear, and I at 30 loved it too! I love the fact you used rhyme throughout this story, it helped the flow and would make it easier for younger children to concentrate. Congreatulations on the trophy too K

I am sure, young lady, that if you keep doing at Grandpa you will be put across his knee and given a spanking. Somehow though, I think you may enjoy that! You little minx!

Actually, I probably need to be placed over Grandpa's knee because I am sure I did something deserving of a good spanking.

Awww... Move over kids, I wanna sit on Grandpa's Knee too! This was such a joy to read Sammy. I do love the way you spin a tale. I have discovered some very worthy and talented story writers lately. This is a wonderful bedtime story for childrenand adults alike! You are always so careful to implement and utilize so many of the fun things children love to hear about. I could certainly see myself enjoying ending the day with a tale such as this. "The land of Grandpa's knee"... a place where all is safe and warm, a place where there is nothing to fear or dread. A comfortable place to enjoy lots of delightful bedtime stories. Thank you for entering my contest Sammy. Good luck!

    A Keeper

This was such a pleasure to read! I really enjoyed the internal rhyme, although you seem to give up a bit at the end. Nonetheless readng this made me almost feel like a kid who was told a bedtime story. Great write!
