Introduction—the history of the species7

I lived amongst humans but they did not know they lived amongst my people and I. They carried out their every day lives and went about each other, thinking that vampires do not exist. They could go out in the sunlight when I could not for the rays from the sun would terribly burn me and while they ate food, I kept myself gorged on blood by drinking it from a wine glass. I was immortal while they died at a certain age. I made no contact with them, physically or socially, and vice versa for them, during the past one hundred years that I’ve been existing. I spent my first century following the rules, obeying the ruler and his demands who was known to be my father, a strong and powerful vampire. 9
His name was Kraven Tannis. He seemed to be more a bureaucrat than he claimed to be a fighter, even after he spent hours on end telling stories on how he was a brave and victorious fighter for the vampires nearly six to five hundred years ago. And so he didn’t dress like a fighter, but a government official instead with luxurious clothing and always smoking cigars throughout the night. There was no other vampire, I deem, who is in higher power than him. If the day suppresses him, he can be a pompous jerk and blame it on everyone else. But usually he is pompous, well sort of, and no one objects his wishes or orders except for me sometimes. Spending an entire century always obeying my father and the rules of the vampires tends to get a bit boring, not when there’s life to enjoy and to go out and fight for a cause. 10
It is I who my father is harsher with and scolds more than anyone else because I am simply his daughter who he expects to act like a proper lady and sit beside him in the council since it is my birthright, or so he claims. Ever since I was of the age sixteen, he has more than wanted me to be a well behaved, beautiful and elegant daughter that he may show off to the rest of our coven. He tries too hard to attempt to convert me into something that I’m not. I’d rather be out hunting down lycans than sitting in a throne like chair sipping blood from a glass with a cigarette in between my fingers, but my father forbids me from going out fighting at all. I mostly obey him but however, sometimes I become tempted to sneak out and aim fire on a lycan or two. 11
The lycans, now what can I say about them? They’re beasts who can turn into wolves and slaughter everything that crosses their path, but most of all, they’ve been causing my species problems for the last few centuries. From my father’s stories, I believe a feud of some sort broke out between the vampires and lycans about four or five hundred years ago when a pack of vicious lycans brutally attacked and killed our ruler at the time whose name was Antonio. By murdering Antonio, the lycans betrayed my kind. Before this, both species did not get along but they meant no harm to each other. In fact, they even shared land, I believe, in different areas in the current city at the time. 12
“It was a betrayal because Antonio and Remus, the lycans leader, made a sworn pact with each other, ensuring the peace between our kind and theirs. We traded weapons with them and gave them half of our land to live on. Remus was a bit irritated that the lycans weren’t actually getting the exact amount of land they were supposed to receive and he was envious by our up to date weaponry and high power over both species so he killed Antonio, thus starting the blood feud of the vampires and lycans.” My father had told me once when I was a little girl. When I was a child, my father would sit by my bedside before I went to sleep during daylight and he would tell me stories about how he fought the beasts and became this powerful ruler. He would tell it with such an exaggerated face and with so much passion. I loved his stories as much as I loved him, no matter how many times he was harsh with me and forbade me from fighting and killing werewolves. I simply learned to forgive him. 13
I always knew that it was wrong to disobey my father and go out and kill lycans but I loved it. I loved the thrill after I made a kill, thrusting my knife into the beast or shooting until it was lifeless. With the thrill came the adrenaline pulsating through my venom veins, making me feel incredibly good. That was exactly why I did it. Pity to the beastly animals, but excellent for me. It was the very thing I lived for. .. 14
