Fire in the Sky

1

*I credit Mr. Tucker, my ninth grade science teacher, for sparking my interest in the night sky. Periodically he would set up a telescope on the school grounds and offer anyone who was interested to come by for a look at the heavens. I was fascinated by a close up view of Jupiter and its’ moons. I can just imagine the wonder and excitement Galileo felt when he first set eyes on the beautiful giant.* 2

*For months afterward I would track Jupiter across the sky and peer through binoculars at its moons. It didn’t take me long to realize what a wonderful world of discovery I lived in. I also came to realize how much our Creator must think about us.  For Him to even be aware of our existence is just amazing.* 3

*Monday morning I rose early and decided to catch a glimpse of Mars and maybe a meteor or two. I selected a vantage point, my grandparent’s old home place, to get a better view of the night sky. I was there about thirty minutes when I decided to get a different view of the western sky. Then from out of nowhere, the sky lit up as a meteor made a fiery entry into the earth’s atmosphere. It lasted less than a second but it was one of the most awesome sights I have ever witnessed.  All the previous sightings paled in comparison.  It’s hard to describe exactly what I saw. It reminded me of one of those firework rockets gone horribly astray. A wide streak of blue green light descended straight down a path in the southern sky. It seemed to pulsate with a shower of sparks on its way down.  Even after it had disappeared there seemed to be an iridescent glow left by the trail of the meteor. I only saw two more meteors that morning but that single event made the whole venture worth while. I think it was the culmination of a lifetime of stargazing.*4

    excellent

These words describe what a wonderful world that God has created for us to look & enjoy if we take the time. This poet has put into words some of cannot. I myself have looked up into the wonder of the night & often thought of a way to take the ride myself.. wonderful words..

How wonderful to witness such an event. I have never seen a meteor shower, but your story makes me feel as if I were right there with you. You and I must've had the same teacher. I wonder, what is it about that grade? Was it our teachers or was it a time that we suddenly became aware, that it was an age of readiness? The excuses to stay out long after the "street lights were on" turned into a love of the midnight skies. I still go outside at night. Thank you for sharing.

You know I share your awe and wonder of the cosmos. We have had many discussions of astronomical events and objects. I wish I could have been there with you for this one; it must have been a truly magical moment for you. Thanks for relating such a cool experience.

I remember the first one I ever saw...it happened so fast I thought I was imagining things... I swear I heard a sound as well. I enjoyed this write very much, I do love the night sky myself.

This was great! The line about the Creator taking note of us reminded me of a verse in scipture, from the Psalms, I think, that says "For what is man, that thou art mindful of him...." Indeed, His handiwork extends far beyond His human creation! I can't say I've ever been much of a "star gazer," but your description here of the night sky being lit up by the meteor display makes me want to look into it! Another beautiful piece!

Oh how I love to star gaze. Knowing that love ones around the world are looking at the same stars, makes me feel close. Nice story leo. You have been busy.
