There was a slam of a book. Mizuki had just finished her book. “Yeah right, like someone can defy fate or destiny.” She stood from the dark, blue couch, dropping her thick book on the light wooden coffee table in front of her. Spotting the clock, she noticed it was late. “Better get to bed…,” she yawned stretching her arms out above her. Once she got in her room she just plopped on her bed and turned out the lights. She was already in her blue, puppy-dog pajamas. Before she fell asleep, she thought about the book she finished. “How am I supposed to believe that someone can change how their future to be? Once it’s written down, it’s written down. There is nothing you can do about it,” she said quietly to herself. Finally Mizuki fell asleep.1
Mizuki opened her eyes to find she was in the middle of a highway in her pajamas. She looked around and it was broad daylight. Then suddenly the sun set and the moon came up. But it looked different. The moon was changing colors: from white to blood red to yellow, and so on. It didn’t make sense. Then she heard a monstrous sound to her right. She looked and saw an SUV coming right at her. Suddenly she froze. She couldn’t move. She couldn’t do anything, only to open her eyes wide from surprise and wait for it to come. Then when it was only 5 ft away from her, she shut her eyes. No pain went over her, no pain, no touching, nothing at all. She opened one eye and saw it stopped right in front of her. Once she realized it she opened her eyes. She opened her mouth as to speak, but nothing came out. She couldn’t say anything. Over her, she felt: shock, surprise, questioning and anxious. She didn’t know what was going on. Suddenly she regained movement and practically fell if she didn’t catch herself. Mizuki took a step back. She mouthed out, “What’s going on?” but nothing came out. Then in the dark cloudy sky a voice creped its way in. “Do you not really think of fate or destiny? You think you, no; anyone had control over what happens to them?” Mizuki stayed silent, still terrified and even more scared with the sudden voice. “If you really think that, will you accept your fate if I say you will be hit by this vehicle right now?” She said nothing. “You don’t want that, do you? You don’t want to die. No one does. Most people are too scared of what will happen if they die. No matter what, anyone is afraid to die. Your best friend, your mom, your dad, your family, they whole world doesn’t want to die! So for the people that try hard to defy fate, they live. Living is a privilege. If you don’t appreciate it so much to actually at least try to defy fate that you don’t deserve it!” She made a bold stance, and yelled, “Stop it! I don’t want this!” She flinched, amazed that she actually talked. “Well then, let’s see how you react with your next day. Good day then, Mizuki.” She looked up. Suddenly the world around her started to vanish. Soon all that was left was a total black space. She started to float, for even the gravity was gone. She felt she would fall at any second. Then suddenly, she woke up in her bed, covered in sweat. She looked over and saw her alarm clock going off. She tried to forget the weird dream and got ready for school.2
Mizuki was in her last period class now and even though she tried to forget about it, she was thinking about her dream. Then suddenly a blur went over her and she fell backward on her back, still sitting on her chair. “Mizuki? What’s with you? Why did you fall over?” She looked up and saw Maka, her best friend. “Maka!” she said in an annoyed voice. “Why did you do that!?” Maka coked her head. “Well you looked like you had something you needed to talk about. And I’m also bored,” she gave a smile. Mizuki rolled her eyes, but smiled because that was just like Maka to act stupid whenever she feels that Mizuki needed comforting. “Oh that didn’t hurt your back did it?” Maka said noticing her on the floor. Mizuki just remembered she was on the floor and rolled to her side to put her seat back. “Yeah it’s ok. As long as I’m not landing in a ditch of spikes then I’ll be ok.” Maka giggled. “Well then I’ll make sure that that doesn’t happen to you.” She put her hands together behind her back. “So do you want to talk about it?” Maka asked. “Oh it’s nothing really,” Mizuki said flipping her hand meaning that it’s ok. “Besides it was just a weird dream. I barely remember it really.” She lied. Mizuki remembered it perfectly for some reason, but she didn’t want her friend to be concerned. Then the teacher yelled, “Hey! What are you two doing? This is not a time for socializing, or do you want detention?” she said. “Sorry, Mrs. Yonderwood,” Maka and Mizuki said at the same time. “Thank you,” she said. Then the rest of the day was silent in the room until the bell rang. Everyone in the classroom was already out when Mizuki was still collecting her stuff. Even Maka was gone now. But it didn’t surprise Mizuki. She usually does that because she always gets in trouble and most likely will need to serve a detention. Mizuki thought nothing like it again then left the room and then the building itself. 3
Mizuki was walking home and was almost there. All she had to do left was cross the train tracks and it was only a few blocks from there. She looked over from hearing a patting sound and saw two boys playing catch with a baseball. The taller one was older and looked more experienced with the game. The other one looked around 7 years old. He didn’t look like someone who can play too well and every time the ball was thrown to him, he usually missed it and had a bad arm. For some reason the older one didn’t make it easier for him at all. They were across the street and Mizuki stopped 20 feet from the train tracks to make sure nothing was coming. From the distance she didn’t see anything, but waited for a little bit longer and watched the two boys play. Then from the distance she heard a train coming. She looked back surprised. Usually when she walked home there wouldn’t be a train for at least 2 hours. She looked back to the two boys playing and it seemed like they didn’t notice it. The older one had decided to give a long throw that went far behind the small boy. The ball finally landed right in the middle of the train tracks and he ran for it. She opened her eyes wide with panic. She has seen the shows about trains and how fast they can go and how long it takes for them to stop. She looked back to the train and it went past her, leaving a strong gust of wind. She looked back and the boy was in the middle of the tracks with the ball in his hand. Once he looked up he saw the train. Without thinking, Mizuki ran up the tracks as fast as she could to try to get him. Amazingly she beat the train to him and knocked him out of the way. Then ahead of her she saw the train. She thought to herself. She didn’t want to die then. She didn’t want to die like this. She quickly looked back and the older boy and he just had a shocked face in front of him. For some reason it seems as if time has stopped for her. She saw the train only 5 feet from her and shut her eyes, prepared for impact. Then she heard a voice. “What are you doing?! I thought you thought it was absurd to defy fate.” She opened her eyes and time froze on her and the train was only a few inches from her. “Why did you just help the boy? He was supposed to die, it was destiny.” She made a determined face and yelled, “A boy doesn’t have to die like that!” she was surprised by what she said. “Destiny is for everyone. The time is different for others.” She talked once more. “I don’t care about that anymore! I don’t care! All I care about is that the boy is okay!” she said. “You did not say everything,” it said. “You don’t want to die either.” She looked back, remembering what she said, and then looked back. “I regret it okay?! I don’t want to die and neither the boy! Just make sure he survives!” The voice made a gesture with his voice and said, “Well done. For that I will have you live as well.” Suddenly she found her self in her bed like earlier that morning.4
Over the day was like it was yesterday. But Maka didn’t bother her. Then on her walk home from school she looked over to the house with the two boys there. They were playing catch. The railroads were free like they always were. Then the smaller boy saw her. He gave a smile and waved. She waved back. Mizuki didn’t know if he knew what had happened before. But at that point she was happy that the both of them were alive. 5
