Violet dragged herself across the floor to Thomas' side. The gaping wound was gushing blood with an eerie gurgle sound that made her wince.
"I love you," Violet whispered, her voice cracking with unconcealed horror.
"Yeah, I bet you say that to all of your boyfriend's enemies," Thomas taunted, his voice dripping with sarcastic jealousy.
"No, only the ones that I owe my life to," Violet whispered as Thomas leaned into the caress of her hand against his cheek.
This was all he needed, to be loved just once in his life; loved by the one girl that would never belong to him.
And for just once in his life. . . that was enough.1
