Curiosity

Elizabeth stared at the contents of the box. It was a living time capsul, full of five centuries of history. This girl would be make an interesting source for her history papers. But Beth shoved that thought aside for later. Kira, or Kitra as she was really called, was a vampire. Liz wasn't really surprised.1

Smells like a rat, sounds like a rat, looks like a rat...probably a rat, she smiled, remembering her father's proverb. Kira wasn't a bringer of plague (Beth hoped), but she certainly qualified as an interesting sort of pest.2

In popular culture - movies and novels of the day - vampires and werewolves did not get along. The classic way of portraying the two together was at each others throats. And while werewolves did not seek out vampires as prey on purpose (at least in Liz's pack), they would eliminate the problem if necessary.3

It wasn't from an old hatred, per-se. In reality, the question was one of territory and food supply, just as with any other large predators. A pack of wolves needed meat, just as vampires needed blood. Another form of big hunter in the area meant a tightened food supply. If a pack felt it's territory and prey rights were in danger, it would lash out accordingly.4

Beth assumed that Kira Kitra! and her little coven family were recent additions to the area. If the vampires had been around for any serious length of time, she would have heard of them before now. Her pack spanned six counties, from Albion to Avilla to Auburn. Every local park and forest was their hunting grounds. If prey - human or otherwise - went missing, the uncles and aunts would tell her.5

"So we're both hiding out from the Man, eh?" Elizabeth smiled. It was comforting, in a way, to be able to share a piece of commonality with the vampire, however small. "I assume, in order to keep a low profile, you don't plan on drinking from any of the students, right?" She turned to look at the other girl.6

It wasn't a warning. Beth had no way of protecting the entire campus on her own. But dead, drained bodies tended to attract unwanted attention. Surely this vampire had the good sense to keep a low profile.7

I wonder how she decides who to eat? Liz thought. Is there a screening process? Does she raid the local jail or take down drug dealers? That would be cool.
