Edwin Coleman Lee was born October 1920. He died June 12, 1951, Maxwell Field, Alabama. He was 30 years old. Twenty years prior, he was 10 years old.7

Nelle Harper Lee was born April 20, 1926. Edwin was six years older.8

In February 1933, Nelle was six years old; she would be seven in April, 1933.9

In 1931, Nelle was four years old and Edwin was ten years old.10

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout is four years younger than Jem, and Dill is five years younger than Jem, and one year younger than Scout. Scout is Nelle; Jem is Edwin; Dill is Truman.11

Truman Capote was born Sept 30, 1924, and was friend to Harper Lee, 1926. He is four years younger than Edwin and one year younger than Nelle.12

Notice that Truman as Dill is five years young than Edwin as Jem, not four; Nelle as Scout is four years younger than Edwin as Jem, not six. This time difference, when Nelle as Scout is nine, makes Edwin as Jem really fifteen, not thirteen. And Truman as Dill is ten, not eight. When Truman is thirteen, his book character Joel is gay and Nelle begins to see that in Truman as Dill.13

It is this gap of five years rather than four between Dill and Jem she must hide as secret as sin. And she must hide that she is six years from Edwin.14

When Edwin married in 1947, he was 27; Nelle was 21, and she left for law school, where her affair with a law professor failed. In 1949, at 23, she left for New York City, and lived near where Truman lived. Her fight between Nelle and Jem, where she said, "I'll kill you," was really between her and Dill. With the marriage and death of her brother Edwin, her only tie was Truman.15
