The days began as they usually did in the summer, hot and dry. People were miserable and most were inside their cool, air conditioned houses; but there were those few that simply had to be outside because of one thing or another. Dripping from sweat and red faced they worked as quickly as possible, their minds centered on the thoughts of home and ice-cream.23
I walked cheerfully down the street, barefoot and humming as I swung my arms. It would probably darken before I made it back home, but this village was rather peaceful, and most of the animals were hiding away and wouldn't come out until midnight because of the heat. Nights were no exception to the rule of blistery winters, chilly falls, freezing winters, and cool spring days.45
I greeted people cheerfully, but didn't really get much enthusiasm back. The heat didn't bother me and people were always amazed that I could even bundle up in winter clothes and still be cold at the hottest times during the summer. Of course, even I had my moments of hot flashes, but they were soon over and forgotten. Today I was not bundled up in winter wear, quite the contrary. A bikini with cut-off jean short over my lower half served as my clothing today; and since it was particularly humid it wasn't that bad.67
I walked into the small store, greeting the man at the cash-register; usually I knew everyone, but he was new in town(some relative of another one), so I hadn't really gotten his name. And I had to hurry home so I wouldn't miss dinner, so socializing was out of the question today. Maybe tomorrow, he seemed really handsome and from the way he was helping the old lady from across the street told me he was also well mannered.89
I picked out the items on my mother's grocery list, careful to be as nit-picky as she told me to be. It was always so hard to do when you just wanted to get in and out; I was starting to develop goose-bumps on my skin from the cold air. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten...And it went on with the amount of foodstuffs that I needed.1011
"Thank-you, and have a good day," The young man called as I headed out the door, I returned the kindness, then, holding the brown paper bags carefully, I headed home. It was already nearing time for the sun to start heading down for the night and I knew then that I would definitely miss dinner, mother would be so angry with me.1213
"Would you like some help," The terrified scream got stuck in my throat and I choked on it, dropping the brown bags and staring wide-eyed at the man that had suddenly appeared. But he wasn't there anymore, catching my breath quickly I turned, only to find him to my right, holding my bags. Another scream that didn't make it.1415
He smiled at me kindly, patiently, and held out my bags for me. I swallowed the mysterious lump in my throat, taking the bags with shaking hands. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to frighten you. You just seemed to be tired, and you have a lot to carry." I squeezed the bags to my chest, remembering my mother telling me about avoiding strange men.1617
"No," My voice was rough and so I cleared my throat and tried again. "No, it's okay. I'm fine, I don't live very far from here." I lied, in truth I was about half way home and it'd still take another two hours to get there. The sky was already blooming beautifully with rosy hues of orange and pink and purple.1819
"Just, let me help you." He said, his eyes begging. "I couldn't, in all good consciousness, let you carry those by yourself. It would also bother me to not know if you got home safely." There was something different about him, something all around mysterious and not-unpleasant. I nodded hesitantly, and he smiled brightly at me, relieving me of one of the bags(the heavier one, thank God).2021
"Who are you?" I asked curiously, since I had never seen him in the village before. He didn't look remotely kin to anyone either, so I wondered if he had moved here just recently. Something told me he had not.2223
"My name is of no concern," He said quietly, his eyes glazed with sadness. I swallowed thickly and let it drop, but I instantly became suspicious and nervous. I watched him and the dirt path I was walking on cautiously.2425
He made small talk, but neither of us revealed too-personal information. Names did not come out and relatives remained unknown. I learned he was single though, he had had a fiancee but she hadn't made it through a car crash just the year before. He was eighteen, so young to lose someone; so young to be engaged.2627
"My home is close, so I can take it now. You don't have to follow." It was another lie, we had only walked for an hour, but I didn't want him to know where I lived.2829
"That is a lie," I looked at him in shock, his whole demeanor changed. "You still live about an hour away. We should keep walking." I couldn't move, I was rooted to the ground, my eyes tied onto him like a dog chained to a pole.3031
"How-how do you know where I live?" My voice was shaky but firm all at the same time and he paused, turning back to look at me. I dropped my bag of foodstuffs, my hand going to my mouth as the contents of the bag spilled out of the ground. The thump of his bag meeting the floor did not escape me, it just wasn't very important.3233
His violet eyes glittered unearthly in the moonlight, his predatory grin exposing the perfectly pearl white teeth. I took a couple of steps back, feeling the lump called my heart rising in my throat. "Who-who are you? What are you?" The words tumbled out of my lips before I could stop them, it was obvious.3435
He stalked towards me and I couldn't move, his skin touched mine. Hot and silky, I wanted to move away. His violet eyes were unnatural and his canine teeth were too pointed, but still perfectly moulded to his mouth. Any human could accomplish that; but it was his eyes that gave me the evidence.3637
"I have to get home," I whispered, my voice shaking with my terror. "My mother will be waiting. She is waiting." He just smiled, pushing my auburn hair out of the way, revealing the tan skin of my neck, the pulse beating frantically underneath. He leaned down, I closed my eyes, and tasted my fear with his tongue.3839
"I do not think you will be making it home tonight, little one," I felt the tears rolling down my cheeks, they were cold. He leaned back and wiped them away. I looked at him in confusion, but he paid me no mind as his attention once again returned to my neck. Nails dug into flesh, he used a knife to cut me all over.4041
Blood oozed down my flesh, it was hot and sticky and the copper scent of it hung heavily in the air. He was smiling softly, his eyes calm and peaceful. This was not how I wanted my life to end! I was only seventeen, and I had so much I wanted...no memories flashed before my eyes.4243
His teeth sunk into my skin, he was obviously done with whatever game he had been playing. I could feel that odd pulling as he sucked the blood out of me, but he was oddly gentle, his hands caressing my back and sides, he held me as if I were a lover.4445
I couldn't help but to grasp at him, tears leaking from my eyes quietly as I held onto the soft material of the shirt that covered his chest. He pulled back suddenly, looking at me with sympathetic eyes. "You are such a good girl," He coo-ed, pushing the hair back from my face.4647
I stared at him lifelessly for a moment, trying to comprehend. But I had nothing to say to that, he smiled sweetly now. "You shall come home with me. I'm sure we will get along with time. And, my love, we have all the time in the world."48
