To be or not to be (short story not finished)

1

I felt myself drifting away from the one girl I had known for 14 years. It didn't take much philosiphizing to realize that my best friend was having an identity crisis. I watched as she strutted into the dressing room holding a bunch of clothes, and I wondered how long this one was going to last. 2

"I'll be out in a minute Lacey, and then you can help me decide which ones." She said, before turning the handle to the stall, and dropping her old brown purse on the floor at her feet.3

I was silent. I didn't want to tell her what I really felt about the whole thing. I knew it was just another "Mia phase", and that she would grow out of it when another guy came around. I couldn't tell her this though, because it would break her heart if she knew, that I didn't see an original bone in her body, and that I was sick and tired of her pretending. 4

I leaned farther back against the wall, and waited for her to come out, dressed in something totally unlike herself.5

"I kind of like these pants, don't you?"6

She gestered to the bright lime green skinny jeans painted onto her thighs, but all I saw were the huge hooker boots strapped to her feet. 7

"Um, Mia? Are you really gonna buy those?"8

"Yeah, why?" The excitement drained from her hopeful face, as my expression stomped all over it.9

I didn't wanna tell her the truth. She just didn't have the right body for tight pants. Her thighs were like wide sponges, and I felt bad thinking what I was. The boots killed it. They made her look trashy, and like she was trying to hard, even though she really was.10

"They don't seem like your style, that's all."11

"They are. I really like them. And they fit perfectly! I'm getting them."12

She quickly closed the door to the stall, and began trying on something else.13

When she opened it again, I felt myself struggling not to smile.14

On her legs, she wore dark wash skin tight jeans, and the same black boots on her feet, and then the worst part; a skin tight grey and black Misfits t-shirt, an inch or two of her midriff visible. 15

"What do you think?" 16

I hated to admit it, but she looked almost pretty. her chestnut brown hair was pulled back in a medium ponytail, and her bangs fell across her forhead perfectly, acentuating her black sunglasses and pale skin. She had even clipped in a matching barrett on the side of her head, to go with the Misfits shirt. 17

"I like it. But what are you trying to be?"18

"Greg's girlfriend." She smiled.
