Speech (55 word story)

1

Dreaming away in the arms of my boyfriend, I give him a tender kiss on the cheek. A couple walks by, staring with disrespectful eyes... 2

Humiliating whispers, sounds of rejection and one fast look later I yell:3

Heterosexual sex is gross and plain wrong! It is the biggest cause to aids and simply sickening society!4

Author notes

I don't think this needs much explanation, but for those still requesting for it:

allthough it has become better the last years, homosexual couples are still looked at with disgrace by a huge part of population as they walk hand in hand across the street, or just give each other a kiss... so this short, short story is in fact a complaint to the conservative part of society.

if I could get 4 more words in, then I'd end with \see how it feels\ but yeah... I think I got the message across without these 4 last words too...

NOTE: I am aware that not all heterosexual people think this way, and I don't mean to offend you with these words... Sometimes I just need to vent like everyone needs to...

I'm hetero.... and I liked this. I'm sick and tired of people telling others how to live and who to love. they have no right, so just ignore us heteros who give you dirty looks. they're just mad that they can't have the love soulmates do.

(though I have to add that most gay relationships are only based on sex and do not last very long at all, and I speak from observance. note i also said most)

This is so true, and so sad I wish that people who just understand this. But yeah, hopefully in the future people will accept everybody. I'm sorry that you get so much disrespect from people, it must be really hard This is good though, a real thought provoker. Good job

Love the lights! Reminds me of a dance club whoo YAH used to go to those. Ah and I just have to say, the gay clubs in Hollywood were the BEST fun. AND, I never got looked down on cause I was/am straight either. Accepting people. Man now I feel old

I liked this short story Leander, as well as the message you get across so well. I understand why people are uncomfortable with gay people, but I grew up in a gay household and my best friend was a lesbian and well to me it's just not a big deal. But others, who haven't grown up with it and aren't used to seeing these displays of affection well they'll always be around. Do as Auden says, '...powder my nose, and tell them to wait. For love is more important than, even a priest or a politican." Yeah. His Johnny poem is magnificent! Keep in mind that many a great love is silent from view. You just have to be you

    you know what -
I am uncomfortable with public displays of affection that are over the top regardless of the gender mix.
I did get caught staring at two women recently, but it had more to do with their freeky hair and clothes and trying to decide what gender either of them were. I had come around a corner and there they stood.
I would have challenged anyone to have walked by without giving them a bit of a lookover.
I do take issue with your closing statement in just one respect. Here is a quote that says it well I think:
    Eleanor Holmes Norton:
The only way to make sure people you agree with can speak is to support the rights of people you don't agree with.

    thank you and good luck

I actually liked this. "Heterosexual sex is gross and plain wrong! It is the biggest cause to aids and simply sickening society!" to give someone the same treatment they give you, letting them see how it feels, is sometimes a good thing. Might make people think out of their box.

A nice switch on the typical small mindedness of many people. Some don't know any better, but many others are just plain mean. The latter are the ones you really need to worry about.

RIGHT ON!!!! I couldnt agree more sweetie. Love is Love...bottom line. Me and a couple of gay guy friends of mine were at a theme park some years back. We were standing in long ass line for a roller coaster and it was kinda chilly so they cuddled up to one another for warmth like any loving couple would. I think that was the first time I had actually seen how cruel people can be with that. Ya'all have come a long way Leander.....don't ever care what people think. I love ya bunches! Shannon Rose

WHOO! AMEN!! I get tired of being looked down on for having a girlfriend. I mean that's just b.s. Homosexuals are just as much people as heterosexuals. I think this is wonderful, and I would applaud it a million times over if I could. Thank you for your outspokenness.. <3

This "speech poem" reminds me so much of one of the first poem of yours that I've read and I remember it so well...the pain this discrimination causes. I for one, my dear friend LOVE you for what you are...a wonderful, gentle, funny, witty and compassionate human being and poet!! We need these kind of poems (speeches or declarations) to write the hurt out of us, to voice our inner-most feelings. A powerful poem...like a dash of cold water in the face. I almost felt like saying..."wake up world"!! And...I do admire your courage and your honesty, my dear friend, to live the love of your heart and soul. Bravo to you

    ~ Nicolette

PS ~ I would have added another four words, but I don't think I should type it here...

ROFLMFAO this reminds me of the time I was with my best friend in the city and we were holding hands. These people looked and whispered so we kissed. They were muttering some shit so I turned around, looked at em and just went "ewwwwww you're STRAIGHT!" and walked away

true love is a beautiful thing, no matter what sex the couples are, the same goes for race, age and any other difference you care to mention. If it is love, then good luck to you, if its not then have fun!!!

It matters very little the particulars behind why we are frustrated or angry. When a rant is due or a vent needed you just have to let go. You bring a point that is from across the table from most (most that I know anyway) so you give the reader a different viewpoint. Good job.

Hi I am very new to allpoetry but I think your story was enchanting. Anyways I don't usually comment on poems because I find that glowing reviews sound cloying no matter what and critical reviews have the tendency to be too apologetic and therefore less useful, but your story is exactly to the point and the style brings the idea to life. Obviously the idea is valid, but if it had been without a unique style - which i believe you created with the asymmetry of the presentation and your use of minimalistic detail and punctuation - it would have been utterly nondescript - even self righteous. As it is however, it perfectly straddles that almost unattainable line between funny story and political statement through which real progress can be made. Keep it up. Also, don't read my poetry as it is substandard and you will then see that I obviously don't know what I'm talking about.

    Hi there leander,
This is a powerful write and I am glad I clicked on it. I have some gay friends too and it is sad that many seem not to accept them. I come from a conservative country and people seem to look down on homosexuals. Rejection indeed is painful. Thank you for featuring this. Hugs, Eris

Margaret wants us yo be kind, and that is wise advice but very little ever gets acco, plished by being meek. Any progress usually entails kicking someone's butt. No one ever changes because they have a change of heart...they change because we make them feel comcomfortable with their opinions. Might does indeed make right. It may not be fair but fire must be fought with fire. Something like that.

This story touched me so much that it inspired me to write a story for this contest too. It must be really awful to be judged by your fellow men, while you are not doing anything wrong. Great write. You made people aware of how this judging is for homosexuals. Anna.

deep down all people just want to be loved for who they are. we all have the same hopes and dreams, for the most part. it's so sad to think that society has "evolved" so much and yet so little has really changed. later Honeybe

You've written the emotion very strongly, it's a good rant!
Prejudice hurts. Rejection hurts. We all want people to be kind to us, but we must be kind first, even if they have been unkind. It's very hard to do.
