A Science Fiction Poem1

(epic sonnet nine parts)2

By the most Beloved, you may ask me how did I think up a science fiction epic sonnet poem in nine parts. Well, I didn't. I got an A in a graduate writing class but one of the assignments from Professor Boynton ended up being the first ode here which was to write a science fiction poem.  I did it over 30 years ago but I always felt I had to finish it. When asked to do it I thought it was a stupid idea, perhaps you do too, since Lovecraft and Poe had written Macabre but not science fiction poems. The two mediums did not seem to mesh. So sit back and open your mind up because this is going to be a bumpy ride down world records. This is the first science fiction poem and maybe, you will write another so that it won't be the last.3

In Beloved’s Exalted Name6

My satellite’s metallic sunset 7

Silhouetted clouds and birds 8

Floated within crystal skies.9

My hollow satellite Minaret 10

Has beautiful gazelles frolicking 11

As predators lay satiated 12

Under its blue twilight.13

My weary eyes tear 14

Looking at romping horses 15

Grazing upon my satellites 16

Interiors abundant with forests.17

My lips spoke gently 18

"Praise Beloved, for our 19

Genetically cloned predators are 20

Free from the plague.21

The Fleet Asia scientists 22

Bred an ecological balance 23

In Colony satellite provinces 24

To repopulate poisoned planets25

The Fleet joined together 26

Under its founder Tariq 27

Who led Crews from 28

Polluted Planets into space.”29

My dirigible floated down 30

Its gas filled shell 31

Rippling through the clouds 32

I rose to it.33

Another dirigible grew larger 34

Its red blue sail 35

Flapping in wind currents 36

Major Issam commanded it.37

I, then, turned on 38

My headset so filled 39

With requests from many 40

I focused upon one.41

Aliens have infested Mawat 43

A starship has landed 44

Near Mawat’s moon’s quarantine."45

I listened in confusion 46

As many voices called 47

Regarding the alien infestation 48

I then responded, "Peace49

Yes, my Major Issam50

For Tariq's fleet mission 52

I honor your alliance.”53

Then, I slipped back  54

Saying, "Beloved protect us" 55

To spread their amorality 76

Causing more genetic plagues.77

Then, I stood up 78

Upon my floating dirigible 79

I untied bungee ropes 80

Leaping to free-fall.81

Pilots tremble more from 82

Shock than from fear 83

High falls are fatal 84

Even in low gravities.85

I drifted over deftly 86

Landing upon a dirigible 87

I reconnected bungee ropes 88

And looked back casually.89

I laughed. "Major Issam 90

For over twenty years 92

Began to congregate, engineers 132

Atmosphere below was hazy 267

Fogs covering several peaks 268

Behind a jagged mountain 271

Triangulated near the quarantine 272

Backing its power charge 275

It glowed with phosphorescence 276

They’re upon a pad 318

Was a mess of 319

Blood, bones and insect 320

Grubs the robot monitored.321

Meanwhile robot nine followed 322

It found a greenhouse 324

With its domes broken.325

Near section portals was 326

A hodgepodge of matter 327

That clearly oozed erupted 328

From a pulsating mass.329

Insects dissolved on robots 330

Power shields as they 331

Moved onwards recording all 332

I began to worry.333

As I turned, I 334

Saw an alien formation 335

Of pulsating white insects 336

An insect saw me 338

It stopped and howled 339

Its fellows attacked it 340

And devoured it whole.341

With red veined antennas.349

Two columns came together 352

Their tentacles broke off 363

Finally, I broke through 366

Running into a hatch 367

The hatch closed cutting 370

One of the insects 371

In half. It writhed 372

And thrashed about mindlessly.373

I recharged my armor 374

Outside I heard insects 375

Howls  against my hull 376

My mind resisted them.377

Insect howls intensified and 378

Pulsating in my head 380

The sound was blinding.381

I recalled both robots 382

That I ordered to 383

Absorb destroy these insects 384

Then, shuddered with realization 391

That some alien insect 392

That mechanically climbed inside 395
