Many thousands of years ago there was a separation between our land and the land next to ours. We lived in harmony and comfort, never doubting the other's superiority. But then our ideals began to change. We no longer wanted the faerie's magic influencing our lives. Things went awry with their magic occasionally and new beliefs caused controversy. It became so horrific for the non-humans that they began to fear for their lives. Humans hunted them almost to extinction. A brilliant faerie, tired of the oppression and the constant fear, separated our lands magically. But every magical bond still has weak points. Throughout these thousands of years occasionally those from one world would find themselves trapped in the other world. The faerie that separated from our land included goblins, witches, fairies, pixies, mermaids, dragons, and many other magical creatures. Our legends come from these times when our lands were connected. But we are not the only ones with the legends. The faerie have their legends too. After they separated from us they lost much of their history, they lacked a government, and they were thrown into a figurative darkness. It would be many hundreds of years before they would be able to establish a stable government. 2
The descendants of the old faerie lost much of their knowledge and destroyed their ancient culture. The fairies had dominant power before the separation, but where they had knowledge and the skills to use that knowledge another dominate race had brute strength, power, and military efficiency. The goblins had no power over the fairies while they had their books, their history, and their skills, but take that away and they were no longer a dominant power. After many years, the goblins realized this, and they began to formulate their plan to bring stability to their land.3
Goblins are tall, taller than most humans and this is one reason why they were so frightening. Their scales are a pale cream color; they have beady black eyes set deep into their large skulls. Their noses are slender and long until they come to a rounded end, much like the end of a pin. Their mouths are not wide, but long with jaws that open wide. They have no need for armor, each scale measuring anywhere from four to six inches thick.4
The goblins emerged from their mountains and traveled quickly through the land; leaving a path of destruction in their wake. They traveled to were the old capitol used to be and destroyed the gates surrounding it and took what they believed as their rightful place among the faerie.5
Having been oppressed while the fairies reigned they forced the delicate creatures into slavery. Many of them escaped deep into the forest and underground caves. They still hide there today, some occasionally are found, others live out their lives in hiding, a much better existence than being forced to be a slave.6
There is one shred of hope for the fairies, though. At the beginning of their rule a wise old seer came to speak with the Goblin King. She spoke quietly, but with wisdom. "One day, far in the future, there will come a fairy different than any others around us. She will be smart, energetic and will have been free from slavery her whole life. You will watch for her and you will try to stop her, but you will not prevail." With that, the seer vanished, never to be seen again.7
The faerie wait anxiously for the arrival of the fairy that the seer predicted; but when the fairy will come, is a mystery to all.8

I really like it, I hope that it does well in the contest! The cliffhanger really makes me wonder how it will end up, and how that will affect the human world.

You left a really good cliffhanger ending, and you described everything really well. I like the fact that the magical races fight amongst each other, instead of all being friends, or against humans or whatever. I'd really like to read more of this

Well done

Oh, hold on! I've just read that this is the prologue! Oh, I'm really sorry, I should've read that first, cause then otherwise the cliffhanger is definitely acceptable! Sorry. Then it's fine for the contest, of course. Good luck!

Cool... I like the whole effect of the story and the mystery of when the fairy will arrive. You've got some description there too, I can see that. However, I'm a little confused... or perhaps not confused, but I don't feel I'm all that satisfied. But it IS a good piece of writing but it lacks something I need: you know, a kind of ending that actually ends, not a cliffhanger so that it leaves me wondering. Sorry
