As kids, Skip and Joey knew that if you dig deep enough you will find China. But they always got bored before the hole went much past their knees.2
They grew up and the legend faded. 3
Two young marines were stationed near Shanghai. 4
While out digging fence holes they wondered, was this their ticket home?5
Author notes
So why Shanghai?

A real reminisce!
LOL, Yeah, that was the theory. But then one day I decided to see if it could really be done on my parents' world globe. Turns out if you live in Michigan and dig straight through the core, you end up thousands of feet under water somewhere near the middle of the Indian Ocean. I decided I would be content to just dig till I hit bedrock. Never even made it that far. Time to sharpen my shovel. -
Hopefully it was their ticket to freedom. It's a very emotional topic to write about. it kinda made me sad to think about it...
You showed the light aswel

This is a wonderful short story, I never knew a story so short could contain so much, and be so meaningful at the same time. Good work.

Exactly 55 words.
I hate to say it, but I disagree with Ima. Maybe in the picture itself, they do have a smug and condescending look. However, if you couple the picture to the poem, it changes the entire look upon the picture. They aren’t smug, they are longing to be home. Thus why they want to ‘dig out of China’ They want to be home with their families, the Susan’s of the world. Not half way around the world, when the only hope there is to get home is to dig or die.

I guess that every soldier dream to get back home even before they depart. Can´t believe that anyone would really like to stay away from home and family to live in that great incertanty. You showed that in a light and somewhat amusing way
Hope all is well with you,
Mari

A wonderful tale. I love how in tough times we head back to the comfort of your youth.
Well written.

Ah this story has much meaning in such a small package! Surely a worthy contender for the crown. The photo however makes me think of the term, "Ugly American" and why other countries hate us. The arrogance just oozes from that photo. I know, you won't agree.
But your story is simply wonderful. -
Great one! Good job Susan. I gotta do this contest looks like fun. My dad always said that... dig all the way to China.
