Friends and Hugs

We got our assignments
We had to say how we'd change the earth
But I couldn't pick just one thing
To save all that I was worth1

I had my umbrella to shield me from the rain
When I saw that poor, poor boy
Standing alone, forgotten, like a ghost
One of many, I found, stripped of joy2

I stood next to him without a sound
And then I played my role
I lifted my umbrella and sheltered him
He then looked, I swear, into my soul3

I told him to follow me to my home
Where I let him warm by the fire
A smile from that wet, dismal face
Right then was my only desire4

I fed him some soup and hot chocolate
Then I was shocked at what I saw
When he took off his shirt for a dry one
I was silenced in sorrowful awe5

Ugly bruises dyed his chest
Where he was mercilessly beat
A twisted display of pink scars and red cuts
Made this human canvas complete6

Covering the abuse, he looked away
Seeing I knew what was true
I was upset, worried, and angry
"How could they let them do this to you?"7

I told him I would help this stop
But he was convert and gave a shrug
I had to show him I truly did care
So I gave him a friend, me, and a hug8

A Hug and a Friend for every child
Whose parent's make nightmares long
The Hug will heal you and rock you goodnight
The Friend will help right their wrongs9

A Hug and a Friend for every girl
Who is too skinny by far
The Hug will lead you from the bathroom stall
The Friend will love you how you are
A Hug and a Friend for every person
Who calls the world their home
The Hug will shelter you from the cruelty
The Friend will be the light when you roam10

A Hug and a Friend for every teenage girl
17, with child, and the father long gone
The Hug your belly will never stop
The Friend will be the hand for you to hold on11

A Hug and a Friend for every young adult
Who craves something they don't want or need
The Hug will believe you can fight this
The Friend will follow if you want to lead12

A Hug and a Friend for every sick person
Who can't find a treatment or cure
The Hug will make you feel you're not alone
The Friend will hope you will someday be pure13

The ones they confirm as Outsiders
Even though it may seem no one's there
Look at that half full glass and remember
There's always someone, like me, boy, who will care14

Teacher, there is endless global delusion15

Stains that cannot be covered by rugs
This is my opinion, my statement for change
The world needs more friends and more hugs16

For some reason, i remember having read this before, although obviously I did not comment. Anyway, I think this is a beautiful and touching piece filled with heart-felt emotion. I love how this targets the poverty-stricken people in the world, and how they need shelter and care and a helping hand if they are to survive.

Some of your wording was exquisite, where as in places, it could use some editting.

Overall, a wonderful read! Thanks for entering and good luck!

Wow! The only thing that I didn't like was that it was hard to read. The rhymes worked, but some didn't make much sense. It was so caring and sweet though, I kind of got over that.

Thank you for entering, I hope you do well!

  • nice...

ANd very ispirational. This speaks of hope and love, of getting along with each other, of having good morals. I agree, everyone could use a hug, it's beneficial and it softens people's armor.
    Great job, good luck!
