“The Library is closed Hayden,” Mrs Cellner stated with brows bent. He hand wedged between the door. Fighting me as I fought to push through the door.2

“It's freaking 35 degrees outside Mrs.Cellner. I am tired and I really need to check my emails. It is seriously important. You don't understand how important it actually is,” I whined stepping back as Mrs. Cellner Slammed the door shut behind her and backed me against a pole.3

“Hayden I have had just about enough of your behavior as I can handle. I have asked you to leave and you have disrespected my wishes not once, but five times. Go and enjoy the weather while you can. I am sure whatever it is that is 'so important' it will still be there on Friday. In the meantime I suggest you stay away from the library until then. That is unless you want to be banned.”4

I scrunched up my nose. My fingers curling into my palms as I stepped to the side. Turning away from Mrs. Cellner. I was an inch away from smacking her manipulative grin of her face and I would have to had I not heard a familiar voice behind me. Calling my name.5

I did not look behind me. I kept my eyes focused. Staring into nothing. Blocking the voice out best as I could so maybe he would go away and get the message. That I had no time for...6

“Sydney,” Mrs Cellner squealed like one of those twat Vaseline girls in my home group.7

It was depressing and rather pathetic that all the girls and women drooled over him. Acting like his shit did not stink. Sydney was not exactly a lady's man to look at to me. But to the rest of the freaks in the school. He certainly got their knickers in a knot.8

“Hello Mrs. Cellner. What are you up to today? Fine day isn't it? Bloody wicked weather. Wouldn't you agree? Sydney asked. His deliciously intoxicating voice dragging the breath right out of Mrs Cellner's lung. Boy did that prat have power.9

“G-o-o-d day Sydney. The library is just doing its annual stock check. Busy week ahead. It is lovely weather. I was just telling Hayden here to go out and enjoy it while she can. A cold change is coming and I dare say we won't see Mr. Sunshine like this for some time,” She chirped. Drawing back a deep breath and exhaling. She seemed close to hyperventilation.10

“Sydney nodded. Oblivious to what she had just said. His eyes were on me. Never veering. He started deeply penetrating my body with his stare. It was uncomfortable. I did not like men looking at me in that way. It disturbed and disgusted me.11

“Well,” he paused. “I was just about to ask Hayden if she wanted to play some ball with some of the guys and I am guessing that you want to get back to your stock Mrs. Cellner. So I bid you good day,” he said laughing at his own I house joke.12

Mrs Cellner was quick to reply this time. She reached for the door knob nodding and backed into the door. Giggling once again. It was disgusting. She was a grown woman for Christ sake. 13

“Goodbye Sydney,” she whispered. “Goodbye Hayden,” she glared. “I hope I won't have to ban you from the library. I trust you can contain yourself long enough to keep away.”14

I shrugged watching as Mrs. Cellner closed the door behind her. Her eyes lingering out the window. Staring at Sydney before disappearing behind a shelf of books.15

“Banned from the library?” Sydney asked. Falsely surprised. He chuckled.16

“Now what could you possibly be up to too get yourself banned from the library? Do you have a lunch time death wish or something? Or are you auditioning for weirdos gone wild.17

I tightened mt fist. My lips pursed. I bit my tongue at first and restrained myself from lashing out and smashing his God like face. He was so arrogant. One of the many reasons I hated Sydney so much.18

“Piss of you prat,” I snapped grinding my teeth into my bottom lip. You have no idea how bad I could fuck you up if I wanted to right now. Get out of my way and go toss your balls around with those arrogant prats you like so called your so called 'friends,” I said paying special emphasis to the word friendship. Knowing full well that Sydney lacked loyalty in the friendship department.19

I wasn't about to be his substitute for quality. I had more important things on my mind. Like breaking into the IT lab to 'borrow' one of their laptops. 20

I needed to check my emails. I had to and I wasn't about to let some pussy hungry twat get in my way of achieving my goal. Especially when he of all people could never understand what it meant to be me.21

“Alright settle down. I didn't want to play ball anyway. I wanted to talk to you. Maybe go for a walk. If you want I can shout you a hot chocolate. I know how much girls love chocolate,” he said cheerfully stretching his hand out towards my shoulder.22

I shrugged him of side stepping towards the concrete yard.23

“Get away from me Sydney. Do I look like I want a hot chocolate? Do I look like I want to be around you period?” I snapped. “Take a freaking hint you as and back the fuck off please. I don't need this.24

Sydney frowned. He looked crushed. I could care less.25

“Is this about your dad?” he pressed on, trying to get closer to me.26

My eyes flashed dangerously at his question. What did he know about my father?27

“What?” I asked suddenly walking towards him. Watching him as he took a few steps back standing still. Stiff to the spot.28

“Your dad?” he repeated half- confident. His hands folded over his chest. “You know everyone seems to know something and I was wondering if it is why you're so...”29

“Anal?” I cut in edging closer towards him. 30

“Tense,” he sighed dropping his hands to his side. “So are you going to tell me the reason or do I have to hear it through the grapevine? Sydney asked. His brows cocked. His head tilted. Holding his curiosity.31

Unnerved by my actions and compelled to hear him out I wanted to know what he knew. What 'they knew'. And who 'they' were.32

I took another step closer till I was standing toe to toe. Nose to nose with him and inhaled deeply. Remembering the breathing techniques my councilor had told me in therapy. I loosened my clenched fist. Letting my fingers uncurl and gritted my teeth. Lowering my voice.33

“You stay out of my business alright? I said calmly. Not surprised my the cold aggression that burned inside me and spoke through my voice.  “Or I will personally strangle you with the grapevine. I have no time for invasion and less sensibility when it comes to mercy. Take a hint. Fuck off.”34

Sydney was silent. Rigid. He breathed nodding. uncertain by my request.35

I sighed. Heaving in my threat.36

I meant it. I meant every word that I said to him. I would choke him to death. I would drain him of his last breath if he invaded my search. It was my search and my search alone and anything stopping me or getting in my way would be removed.37

I gave Sydney one last serious glare before I turned my heel. Not looking back and walked away towards the IT rooms across the yard. Pushing aside anyone who got in my way.38

“Catch you later then?' I heard Sydney yell behind me.39

I shook my head in disbelief at his ignorance. There was no chance in hell that was going to happen.

Author notes

I hope this part didn't seem to juvenile. They are high school students. Roughly about 15-17. I wanted to make sure Hayden's character was set and you understood what she was like. Sydney was her old best friend and it changed in high school he went with boys and Hayden relived her secret.
