The Ordinary Princess

A couple, love-making on the broad feather bed. Here, they become themselves, become just as anyone else. They are nothing special except perhaps to each other. The king thrusts like the farmhand thrusts the milkmaid in an empty moonlit field not too far from here. The queen stretches and sighs not unlike a whore pinned behind a nearby pub. Here, you cannot tell nor does it matter what they have done or what they do. They are just as anyone else.1

The king raises himself on quivering arms, sweat from heavy love-making glistening on his brow, and stares down on his queen. There is no expression on her face. She merely watches his fierce gaze. A shudder passes through them both. Blue –brown – they widen, the black part swelling then spilling. If not Her yet, something was born.2

Both lie perfectly still. Time is slowed for them, a heartbeat, feeling a surge of new blood in their veins, but, inside, things are quickening. It’s a war of speeding, taking, conquering. A new life is taking place.3

Finally, the king dips his grey chin to his chest and lets out a rush of air as he departs from her. He falls heavy and tired against a lonely wrinkled plot beside her. He is no longer concerned with her, but she luxuriously stretches onto her side and watches him adoringly. She loves him for making her such a huge importance.4

She opens her mouth suddenly as if to say something but she changes her mind last minute and the words condense into an inaudible breathy syllable. She changes her mind once again and speaks softly but confidently. She is a woman who is strong and knows how to challenge the role she keeps without overstepping her boundaries.5

“It’s going to be a girl.” She says this so decidedly that the king can’t help but let a smile twitch on his lips. As if she knows. The king chuckled to himself. He was not one of many words so he did not share with his wife his theory that only nancy men made girls while he was too broad and burly to create anything other than a strong son just the same.6

Author notes

I don't know if you've ever read it, but there was this book I read when I was younger called "The Ordinary Princess". It was just an ok book but I loved the concept. It kind of started out like Sleeping Beauty where the princess is born and the fairies give her gifts except for the one screw up fairy got pissed or something and made her ordinary. So, while all the other princesses grew up and became stunningly beautiful, Princess Amy grew up and became nothing special at all.

I can't remember how it ended.

Anyways, I wanted to play on that concept and make a novel (Ha ha, I know, I'm laughing at myself too. Yeah right...). It's going to be a bit more epic though and much sadder. My princess was just born ordinary (I was trying to play that up a bit in above scene. Don't know if you noticed...). Her parents end up making up the rumor that a witch cast a spell on her and made her this way because they're embarassed of her. Sad.

But the story is going to be all about how, in a desperate attempt to marry off thier daughter, the king and queen convince the kingdom that a spell was cast on the princess and that the only way it can be reversed is if the witch (or any witch) is sought out by a prince to fix things.

FYI The prince has problems of his own. He's gay. Oh yeah. I went there. If Jessica can't keep you on the edge of your seat, I don't know who can.
