Setting: Daughter asks her mother to tell her the rest of the story.4

Mommy, you never finished the story about Caitlin and Lily! Please tell me the rest for my bedtime story tonight!7

Alright darling, I will tell you the rest of what I know so far..8

One day, a particularly lonely day because Michael was away for the weekend, there came a knock at the door.9

-Mother knocks on the nightstand-10

Cat was surprised, she hadn't had a visitor since Michael had come all that time ago. She went to the door and hesitantly opened it. Her heart leaped as she laid her eyes upon her darling Lily, who had become, if it was possible, even more lovely. "Lily!" she cried. "My dear Lily.." Cat stopped short. It came rushing back to her, the pain that Lily had cast into her heart. Cats' eyes narrowed a fraction. "Come in, come in and tell me what it is you are here for." Cat was guiltily thankful that Michael was not there. Lily came inside and looked deeply into Cats eyes, as if soaking her in slowly, savoring her. Cat could not help blushing a bit. She ushered Lily into a chair and went about fixing drinks. "Well, dearest, are you going to speak to me or just stare at me?" she said as she handed Lily a drink. Lily stared at her for a moment more, then suddenly blurted out..11

"Oh my beautiful Caitlin..I could not bear one more minute without you. I just had to be sure that you were alive, and well. I feel so guilty for what I...what I did to you." Lily looked down at her hands with her shoulders slumped. Cat noticed that she was wearing the ruby ring that she had bought Lily for Christmas 5 years ago. Lily fondled it while trying to get up the courage to speak again.12

"I have missed you, so so much. Mother keeps bringing all these suitors to me. I have seen at lest 500 since you left. I am supposedly "dating" one right now. That is to say, he comes to the palace with chocolates and flowers and jewelry and puppies and kittens and anything else you can think of, and he escorts me to all the social affairs I am made to attend. I have allowed him to kiss me just to make my mother happy. But I can honestly say that he is nothing, nothing compared to you my darling. I have realized that you are my one and only..The only one I have ever and will ever love, no matter what the cost." After a long moment she said "Well Caitlin, can you please say something? I need to hear that you forgive me, that you love me...heck, say that you hate me and never want to see me again...this silence is killing me!" Lily's yellow eyes were filling with tears, her chin trembling.13

"I...I don't know what to say," said Cat finally. "I am hesitant to believe your words... you hurt me so badly those 5 years ago, I am afraid to open my heart to you again." But at these words, Cat saw pain in Lily's eyes, and then her doubt washed away. Not knowing how to express her feelings, she simply rushed over to her darling Lily and hugged her fiercely. "Of course, of course I still love you. I will always. Stay with me my Lily, I will certainly make you happy."14

And they had a beautiful afternoon together, filled with love and affection and all the things they had missed doing together all those years.15

That night while they were lying before the fire, Lily sat up and looked guiltily at Cat, who had fallen asleep cuddled up to her. Lily knew she had done the wrong thing coming here. She kissed her beloved Cat gently, and soundlessly left the house and went back to her life as if nothing had changed.16

But Mommy, how could Lily do that to Cat? Didn't she say she loved Cat? Didn't she say she didn't care what the cost was?17

Well honey, sometimes people take the easy way out, even if it hurts others. They do what they know in their hearts to be wrong, because the rest of the world says that it is right.18

Why?19

I do not know, my love...I don't know.20

Well, what happens next?21

I will tell you that Cat was extremely heart broken when she woke up the next morning to find Lily and all her things missing. She locked every door and every window and refused to speak to anyone. Imagine Micheal's surprise when he knocked on Cat's door and heard her tell him to go away, that she was too upset for visitors, and when he asked why, she told him he would never understand. She had rebuilt the wall around her heart, stronger and more stubborn than ever before.22

And we will leave the story for now, until another night..23
