I don't believe but I'm unsure to what extent my non-belief goes; Atheist or Agnostic. I have the same problems as most kids, my mother shoving Baptism down my throat since I was a kid. When I was little I really liked the idea of God, of someone looking down on me and protecting me. As I've gotten older I've come to really question what function any god serves in human lives.1
First, all those stories in the Bible about God punishing the sinners and the non-believers completely turn me off. Just because someone doesn't believe in/worship him God decides to send them to an eternity of torture in Hell. For the all-merciful God that everyone spouts about that is absolutely horrible. 2
More than ever these days you see the effect religion has on people. People hate someone because of what they do or don't believe in. Humanity has enough problems and just doesn't need more excuses to start fights. Religions teach peace and tolerance but groups kill in the name of their own God. I'm pretty sure bombing an abortion clinic is not something a god would want, at least one that deserves worship. 3
Instead of sacrificing my own happiness for an eternity with someone who might not exist I'd rather live the life I have here and now. What I'm saying is I think that some of the basic values religions teach are good; but they become so twisted by personal whims that it makes believing in any higher power close to impossible.4
All of this stuff just destroyed what belief I might have had, but more than anything I think it was my parents. If God was really so wonderful, then aren’t I supposed to just believe in him on my own? They shouldn't have to force me to church and tell me what I ought to have faith in. I still like the idea of God, but that's it.5

whoa.
You really made a lot of sense here. I'm really impressed by your beliefs, and They are defiantely something that appeal to me. I suppose if god exsists, and he's what the bible makes him out to be, then he wouldn't punish a kind hearted person just for not believing.

Thank you. I still really love the idea of a higher power, it's just I haven't found any religion that's puts it into an appealing perspective for me.
Hope we both find one.

I DEFINITELY agree!
Wow, I never knew you felt this way. But you're right, what kind of God sends people to hell just for not worshipping him? I don't go to church every sunday, and I don't pray every night. But I'm still a good person. Am I going to hell?
I think a lot of people are in their religion because of fear--fear of the unknown, of hell, of God smiting them or something. But if you're going to believe in a higher power...it should be out of love, or faith.
Anyways, great job! I loved how well written this was. You got your thoughts down in writing successfully and in a way that made sense. Good luck in the contest! :]

I completely agree with you. Especially after hearing about the abortion doctor getting shot and killed yesterday in the name of religion. It is so wrong.

Yeah. I mean protesting is one thing but to actually murder someone is just horrible. They talk about saving lives; but hello? I'm pretty sure shooting someone is taking a life.

I agree with you. Whenever I see kids and teenagers being "forced" into religion, I get really steamed inside. It's so easy to manipulate kids into things like religion. In a way, religions are like cults. And many religions have turned into cults. The people or kids may not know it, but many have been so indoctrinated to the point of being brainwashed. I completely understand when you say that it was practicly shoved down your throat. I felt that way also growing up, but fortunately my parents have never been the type to force anything like that. They raised me according to their beliefs but they can't force me to believe them. People within churches though, and grandparents especially, have gotten to me in the past. I understand your feeling. I also understand how you still like the idea of God. You were raised with the concept so it's like a comfort to you. I feel the same way sometimes. Thanks so much for entering this! I enjoyed reading it. =)

Thanks a lot. It's a good contest prompt you have. Not a lot of people like discussing this kind of thing.
