--=={Chapter 2 The Sudden Change of Dragon and Tiger}==--4

Lake Huang is an ancient name that comes from the Spring and Autumn Period(707 - 480 B.C.).5

Upon entering the gathering the first thing seen were thirteen flag poles flying thirteen impressive banners.6

Mei Simang pointed at a yellow silk banner and explained to Yu Peiyu, "Yellow represents prominence and only the leading martial arts school is allowed to use it.  At the moment Shaolin holds the title.  Taoism often makes references to the color purple, that is why the banner of Wudang is purple.  Kunlun is famous for the 'Eight stances of Heavenly Dragon'.  That is why there are several flying dragons embroidered on their banner.  It's a very impressive scene, don't you think?"7

Yu Peiyu looking at a banner made out of several small pieces of differently colored cloth and asked, "Is that the banner of the Beggars Association?"8

"We ARE poor beggars so we used the materials that other people threw away and made a banner out of it." Mei Simang laughed, "We are very thrifty."9

"May I ask where master Hong Lian is at the moment?  I would like to pay my respects."10

"Beneath every flag-pole there is a large tent.  Our leader is resting right over there in that tent." replied Mei Simang pointing at the tent below the simple banner.11

As they walked towards the tent many people looked respectfully at Mei and Yu and humbly greeted them.12

"The Beggars Association has been able to remain the most important Wulin group for more than 100 years." thought Yu Peiyu, "Even their disciples have amazing abilities and prestige, their leader must be even more impressive.  When did I meet such an important and prominent man?"   The more he thought about it the more confused he became.   13

As they approached the tent he noticed twent to thirty young men and women patrolling the area.  Judging by their appearances they all looked like that had good martial arts.  All of them were wearing different colored robes, so they must be disciples of the thirteen great schools.  14

Before Mei Simang was able to comment more a Taoist priest in a purple robe approached him and humbly said, "Old master Mei, you have arrived.  This is...?"15

"Hahaha!" laughed Mei Simang, "Taoist brother, this is young master Yu .  He is our honorable guest."16

Yu Peiyu had already taken his invitation out so he held it up.  The Taoist priest backed away three paces, "This way, please."17

Yu Peiyu looked back and suddenly fully realized the safety precautions the thirteen great schools were taking.  He considered himself very lucky, because the majority of the Wulin people could not enter and had to stay outside the established perimeter.  18

"Master, young master Yu is here." said Mei Simang as he approached the tent. 19

"Please let him in!  He must be very anxious."20

Yu Peiyu was indeed very anxious and couldn't wait to find out who this mysterious leader was.  He entered the tent with Mei and saw that it was very luxurious on the inside.  He couldn't see the face of the leader too clearly as he knelt down, "Yu Peiyu pays his respects to master Hong Lian."21

Master Hong Lian turned around and smiled, "Brother Yu, don't you recognize me anymore?"22

When Yu Peiyu saw the pair of bright shining eyes he stuttered, "You..you..are you the leader of the Beggar's Association?"23

Master Hong Lian was the very same young beggar that he had met earlier.24

Yu Peiyu was so surprised that he couldn't think of anything to say.25

"Not all leaders of Wulin schools are old," laughed Hong Lianhua "for example the leader of Diancang isn't even 30 yet.  The leader of the Baihua (100 flowers) Association is also only about 20 odd years old."26

"I wonder why master Hong Lian kept helping me..."27

"There isn't any particular reason, I just happen to like you.  Wulin is an odd place, some people want to kill you on a strange impulse, and others want to help you for mysterious reasons."28

"True." agreed Yu Peiyu.29

Hong Lianhua stopped smiling and seriously said, "Judging from your expression, this gathering is an extremely important event for you."30

"A matter of life and death."31

"It would be unfair if a bunch of idlers were allowed to enter," continued Hong Lianhua, "when people like you who really have important matters aren't allowed to participate."32

"Thank you for helping me." said Yu Peiyu respectfully.33

"Soon you will also become the next leader of the Xiantian Wuji School.  When that happens we wouldn't be able to invite you over even if we sent you 100 invitations."34

Yu Peiyu gasped, "How did you know?""35

At this point they heard a loud "GONG" accompanied by a clear voice saying, "The gathering is about to begin.  Would the 13 leaders please take their seats."36

Hong Lianhua grabbed Yu Peiyu's hand and smiled, "All of the previous leaders of the Beggar's Association were not only notorious busybodies, but they also had to have the ability to know practically everything.  Exactly how much about you I know, you will soon find out."37

A huge platform had been constructed just for this event and many Wulin dignitaries were now peresent.38

A big cauldron emitting white smoke sat in the middle of the platform.  On each side of the cauldron sat a row of armchairs.  There were a total of thirteen armchairs on the platform, with nine of them occupied.  39

An old monk with a long white beard, clothed in a yellow kasya, stood in front of the cauldron.  Although he was somewhat small and skinny he still looked very majestic.  The old monk was obviously the abbot of the Shaolin Monastery, reverend Tianyun.40

Under the platform more rows of chairs had been arranged, where several famous Wulin dignitaries were sitting.  Strangely, the front row was still unoccupied. 41

Hong Lianhua smiled to Yu, "I have to go up there and perform now, just find yourself a seat.  Having a yellow invitation automatically means that you have a seat, so don't be shy."42

Hong Lianhua and six beggars walked up onto the platform.43

A deep, strong voice announced, "The leader of the Beggar's Association, master Hong Lian!"44

The announcer was a very tall and big man.  Hong Lianhua was much smaller compared to him, but all the eyes of the attending heroes had shifted from the announcer to Hong Lianhua.45

Yu Peiyu began to smile when he noticed this.  He was very proud to have a friend like  Hong Lianhua.  46

"Seeing that your friend is so impressive, you must be very proud." said a clear and lovely voice.47

Yu Peiyu turned around and saw a pair of cold, clear eyes flickering with a hint of  passion in the background, the voice belonged to Jin Yanzi.48

He sat down in unison beside her and smiled back, but didn't say anything back.  49

The young master of the divine sabre was not pleased and had an annoyed look on his face.50

"Yan-Er, shall we sit somewhere else?"51

Jin Yanzi coldly replied, "Why should I sit somewhere else?"52

"Somehow the air around here seems not so fresh anymore." the young master answered.53

Yu Peiyu stood up and began looking for a new place to sit, however he felt Jin Yanzi's delicate, soft hand holding his wrist.  The young master began to fume.54

"Fine, fine!  I'll leave."55

Even though he said this, he remained seated and wouldn't let Jin Yanzi out of sight.56

Yu was amused by this whole situation and secretly laughed to himself. 57

Although Yu Peiyu didn't fully understand what love meant at this point in his life, he knew that it was sweet and bitter.  After gazing into the eyes of Jin Yanzi he remembered Lin Daiyu.  He remembered her eyes, expression, her beauty and strong personality and asked himself why she had tricked him.58

The announcer loudly introduced someone else, "The leader of the Baihua (100 flowers) Association, Madame Hai Tangjun!"59

Twelve maidens appeared carrying a sedan-chair decorated with fragrant flowers.  The scent of the flowers enchanted everyone.  On top of the sedan-chair was a beautiful, seductive woman wearing a suggestive silk gown adorned with many garlands.  One of the maidens held her hand as she descended from the sedan-chair.  Everyone was captivated by the fragrance and her allure.60

"This Madame Hai Tang is indeed a true beauty." Jin Yanzi softly sighed to Yu Peiyu.61

Yu Peiyu didn't respond because he was looking for someone in the crowd.  Twelve of the thirteen leaders werer already there, but Yu Peiyu was hoping he would see someone before it started.  Wouldn't "they" make an appearance?62

The rest of the attending heroes all began to wonder, "Why hasn't the leader of the Hainan School arrived yet?  Could it be that Master Yu has been detained since he lives in the far south of China?"63

The heroes began to whisper about the leader of the Hainan School's, Yu Xuan, tardiness.64

A hush suddenly descended on the crowd as everyone turned to look at an approaching man.  He was a rather fat man wearing a green robe, staggering like a drunkard.  Hanging at his waste was an old sword, and judging by the expression he wore, he was an alcoholic.  He didn't seem to care about all the people staring at him.65

The announcer frowned and loudly introduced, "The leader of the Hainan School, master Yu Xuan!"66

This man was the impressive 'Flying Fish and Swift Sword' Yu Xuan, who was said to be unbeaten throughout the 18 isles of the South Sea.67

He walked up the platform and laughed, "Sorry I'm late, please forgive me."68

The abbot of Shaolin gave him a Buddhist greeting by putting his palms together.69

A Taoist priest wearing a black robe smiled coldly, "Brother Yu, you're not too late.  You could have drunk a few more cups before joining us."70

Yu Xuan blinked his eyes and laughingly remarked, "Well, some people see the fun in liquor and some don't.  I cannot help it if the KongTong school prohibits drinking.  I really don't have anything else to say to the likes of you."71

"The gathering does NOT welcome drunkards like you" said the Taoist sternly as he stood up.72

Yu Xuan ignored him and sat down.73

The Shaolin abbot smiled, "Taoist brohter Jueqing, please don't be upset..."74

"This man is late because he was getting himself drunk." said Jueqing Zi angrily, "Because of his drinking he could have delayed the prospects and the futures of all these heroes of Wulin.  He should be punished accordingly, otherwise how can we maintain proper discipline?"75

Abbot Tianyun turned to the leader of Wudang as reverend Chuchen stood to his feet, "Master Yu..."76

Before he finished speaking, Hong Lianghua interrupted laughing, "Do all of you think that master Yu is late because he went drinking?"77

"I think the information master Hong Lina has gathered will enlighten us."78

Hong Lianhua loudly pronounced, "Master Yu was able to lure 'The Seven Hornets of the White Forest' to a remote place and killed them all.  With this act he was able to re-assure the safety of all the women at this gathering.  I, Hong Lianhua, would like to personally thank him."79

Everyone was shocked to hear that these infamous rapists were able to sneak into the city.  Luckily Yu Xuan was able to kill them, otherwise who knows what would have happened to some poor unsuspecting woman or girl with them still on the loose.80

Since Shaolin was the organizer of this particular gathering, they would have been held responsible if anything had happened.  Abbot Tianyun was known to have extraordinary cultivation, but even he was visibly surprised.81

Yu Xuan simply smiled in a carefree manner, "Master Hong Lian is quite knowledgeable, even small matters like this fail to escape your attention."82

"Benefactor Yu, how can you say that this is such a small matter?" Abbot Tianyun said earnestly, "You have done a great deed today.  By this action alone you are obviously fit to become the new chancellor of Wulin."83

If anyone else had said these words it would have been received as a polite formality, but the words of the abbot of Shaolin carried a very strong weight.  With this statement alone Yu Xuan could very well become the next chancellor of Wulin for seven years.84

Yu Xuan respectfully replied, "If I hadn't disposed of those rogues, I am sure master Hong Lian would have done it himself."85

"Beggars cannot become leaders of the relm of martial arts, we would become the laughing-stock of the entire world.  Abbot Tianyun is highly respected in Wulin and I feel that we should ask the reverend to continue in his position and lead us for another seven years."86

"I am too old now to lead the realm.  Even without this incident I have no intentions of becoming the chancellor again."87

Shaolin appeared to have no desire to lead again, but who would dare to follow in the footsteps of Shaolin?88

Because abbot Tianyun made his intentions known the others leaders began to express their opinions.89

The leader of the Huashan School, the graceful Taoist priestess Xu Shuzhen said in a clear voice, "Wudang has been the orthodox Taoist school for many years.  If abbot Tianyun will not waver in his decision I will support Wudang."90

Reverend Chuchen simply smiled and sat down.91

"Of course Wudang will receive support from Huashan." scoffed the leader of the Kongtong school, "Unfortunately I do NOT have a sister who is the leader of the Huashan School."92

Xu Shuzhen and reverend Chuchen are siblings, and coincidentally both became leaders of two of the most prominent martial arts schools.  This is an exemplary tale of both their perseverance and excellence, but Jueqing Zi made it an excuse to make fun of them.93

Xu Shuzhen merely raised her delicate eyebrows, as reverend Chuchen smiled, "In that case I nominate reverend Jueqing."94

"If someone else is willing to lead Wulin, we Diancang have no objections." Xie Tianbi blurted out, "But we do have some objections to Kongtong and reverend Jueqing being a candidate."95

Although the Diancang School was in the remote Yunnan province its disciples had good reputations and the words of their leader carried a lot of weight in Wulin.96

Jueqing Zi's countenance suddenly changed, "It seems that there will have to be a fight in order to choose a new chancellor."97

"If thats the case I look forward to an encounter with the world famous 'Merciless Swordsmandship'" said Xie Tianbi holding his sword.98

As Xie Tianbi finished speaking an old man stood up, "I Ouyang Long on behalf of the 36 united heroes of the waters, nominate master Xie of the Diancang School.  As for reverend Jueqing's 'Merciless Swordsman..."99

Before Ouyang Long could finish speaking a bald old man with a fair, red, and young looking face laughed, "Diancang School lies in the outer regions of China, if master Xie becomes the chancellor he will have virtually no control over lord Ouyang.  If that happens Lord Ouyang can do whatever he feels like."100

"What do you mean by saying that?" shouted Ouyang angrilly, "Even if everyone else is afraid of the secret weaponry of the Tang Clan from the Sichuan province, I AM NOT AFRAID OF YOU!"101

"You want to give it a try, then?"  He waved his hand and Ouyang Long quickly leapt away.102

The bald old man chuckled as he stroked his beard, "Lord Ouyang is courageous indeed."103

Abbot Tianyun was frowning his eyebrows as he saw this whole situation begin to get out of hand, "Everyone please settle down!  It was not my intention to create chaos."104

Despite all of the noise everyone could hear the voice of abbot Tianyun clearly, and they quickly quieted down.  Just as the ordered had been restored a large muscular man jumped up onto the platform.  He was as tall and impressive looking as the announcer, and he lifted the heavy cauldron with ease.105

All the heroes applauded when they saw this, even Yu Peiyu exclaimed, "This man is truly awesome!"106

Jin Yanzi immediately replied, "He is one of the leading figures of Wulin in the northern regions of China.  Everyone calls him 'The Invicible Iron Overlord.'  His arms are very strong so he can easily lift heavy objects, but he's not too intelligent."107

Yu Peiyu still didn't say anything back to her as he watched the Iron Overlord carry the cauldron around on the platform.108

He put the cauldron back down and shouted, "Whoever can lift this cauldron and easily walk three paces on this platform I will nominate him to become the new chancellor of Wulin!"109

All of the dignitaries on the platform were martial arts experts, but none of them had the ability to lift the heavy cauldron.  Since they all knew this nobody said a word.  The Iron Overlord continued to stand there looking at everyone arrogantly with a pleased look on his face.110

"I never thought I would have the chance to see the Iron Tyrant Strength." said Madame Hai Tang as she walked up to the Iron Overlord, "I really admire your strength."111

The Iron Overlord was mesmerized by her charm and beauty.  He had to clear his throat before saying, "You're too kind Madame."112

She stared at him intently and continued in a sweet voice, "That awesome power you displayed, is it really generated through these two arms?"113

The fragrance of Hai Tang was so strong that even if you stood several meters away from here you would still be captivated by her scent.  She was now standing only a few centimeteres away from the Iron Overlord, who was almost completely under her spell.  He was even having difficulty standing still.  114

"Can I touch your arms?" she asked innocently.115

The Iron Overlord blushed and stuttered, "Ma-Madame..I..uhh...I"116

Madame Hai Tang's soft delicate hands were already carressing and stroking the Overlord's arm.  He had no idea what to do so he just stood there blushing. 117

"Brother Tie, pay attention!" Hong Lianhua called out.  It was already too late he couldn't move at all and felt an iron grip holding him.  Madame Hai Tang lifted the Iron Overlord up easily with a grin on her face.  A huge muscular man was now being lifted in the air by a graceful and delicate woman.  118

This was such a strange event that nobody knew whether to applaud or laugh.  This was certainly a scene that nobody would ever forget.119

"Whoever can lift this true 'HERO'," Madame Hai Taing sweetly said, "I will support in becoming the next chancellor of Wulin."  After speaking she set the Iron Overlord down, smiled at him tenderly, and returned to her seat.120

The Iron Overlord was able to move again, but was so confused he couldn't do anything other than stare at her with a silly look on his face.121

Yu Xuan approched Madame Hai Tang chuckling, "Madame, could I borrow a garland from you?"122

"If master Yu were a bit slimmer I would be very happy to give you one of..." as she was speaking she saw, hanging on the tip of Yu Xuan's sword, one of her garlands.  Nobody saw clearly when or how Yu Xuan drew his sword and managed to remove a garland from Madame Hai Tang.123

She quickly backed away three paces and had turned very pale.124

"Madame, since you gave away one of your garlands to master Yu," laughed Hong Lianhua, "why don't you wear one of my red lotuses."  While he was saying this he advanced forward so quickly that a red lotus was perched in her hair before anyone else could react.  The display of Hong Lianhua's unique art of levitation was so amazing that even the leader of Kunlun, who was renowned for his 'Eight Stances of Heavenly Dragon', was impressed and didn't think he was be able to do such a thing.125

Madame Hai Tang, still looking pale, put both of her hands in her sleeves, "Two grown men picking on a helpless woman.  Aren't you afraid of what people will say?"  Although her smile was quite charming, everyone had heard of the three killing specialties of the Baihua Association; The Soul-dissolving flower, Heavenly Fragrant Fog, and The Bone Gnawing Rain. 126

It appeared as though she put her hands in her sleeves to prepare a strike.127

Hong Lianhua and Yu Xuan continued to smile, but they very cautious.  Both of them knew about these three killing specialties of Baihua.  To their knowledge no one had successfully avoided any of these special techniques without injury.  Yu Xuan's fast sword was no laughing matter either.128

As the tension was building in this delicate situation Abbot Tianyun was suddenly standing between Yu Xuang and Madame Hai Tang.  He had moved so quickly that it looked like he appeared out of thin air.  129

"There are numerous variations in martial arts, everyone one of them have their advantages and disadvantages.  If all of you begin to engage in these meaningless battles not only will it become difficult to find the victor, but we will also become the laughint stock of the world."130

Everyone kept quiet as Reverend Chuchen asked, "Abbot Tianyun, what do you suggest?"131

"When it comes to martial arts everyone has a strength.  When it comes to prestige it becomes difficult to differentiate between the leaders of the prominent schools.  What I suggest is..."132

A laughing man loudly interjected, "Well, why don't you all give the leading position to my Xiantian Wuji School?!"  Ten men could be seen slowly approaching the platform leaving a favorable impression on everyone at the gathering. 133

"Here they are, here they are..." said Yu Peiyu softly to himself as he began to tremble.134

The ten men formed two rows.  All of them were wearing green brocades and had long beards.  They all appeared to be about 50 years old.  These ten men were all famous martial arts experts that many people knew of, but had never met; The Flowered Chestnut Sword Lin Shoujuan, the Dragonking of Taihu, Silver Spear Shen, Ximen Feng of Mount Mao, the hero Jiangnan Wang Yuluo, etc.135

Even though they weren't leaders of any of the prominent martial arts schools, their fame was not inferior to the 13 leaders of the Great Schools.  Abbot Tianyun quickly advanced to greeting them, "Welcome to all of you!  It is such an honor to have you here attending the ceremony.  Please take a seat here in the first row."136

"We're not here to attend the ceremony." replied Lin Shoujuan.137

Wan Yuluo queried, "Isn't the Xiantian Wuji School still worthy enough to take a place on the platform?"138

Even though Abbot Tianyun was slightly confused he continued smiling as he asked, "Since when did all of you join the Xiantian Wuji School?"139

"We didn't invite anyone over that day, please forgive us." said Lin Shoujuan.140

"Benefactors, your leader, master Yu is he..."141

A voice from behind was heard, "How are you doing, reverend Tianyun?  We haven't seen each other for many years."  Abbot Tianyun turned around and saw an elderly, sophisticated man in a long brocade standing on the platform, the very leader of the Xiantian Wuji School Yu Fanghe.  Nobody had even seen him walk up the platform.142

"Brother Yu, I am glad to see you again.  I never thought you would reenter the the realm of martial arts again.  I feel so much more assured with your arrival."  With these words abbot Tianyun showed his support for Yu Fanghe and the Xiantian Wuji School.143

Jueqing Zi and the others weren't as eager to give in, but seeing how Yu Fanghe had managed to recruit a group of so many top martial arts masters they had to concede.144

"If brother Yu would become the new chancellor of Wulin all the Wudang disciples will be very pleased." said Reverend Chuchen. 145

Jueqing Zi said, "The entire Kongtong School admires master Yu's reputation and will gladly welcome master Yu to become the new chancellor of Wulin."146

"My teacher often spoke of master Yu when he was alive.  It is a great honor to meet you in person, all the friends of the water will be very happy to have Master Yu lead us." added Ouyang Long loudly.147

"Master Yu is famous for his benevolence and righteousness and could never be compared to mean men who bully innocent women.  The Baihua Association fully supports master Yu." said Madame Hai Tang.148

Everyone applauded with their approval and Yu Fanghe was apparently going to be the next chancellor.  Hong Lianhua was shocked to see this happening and began looking into the croud hoping to spot Yu Peiyu.149

"I'm and old man with no special abilities and I am not fit to lead the heroes of the realm, however..."150

"THIS MAN IS NOT MY FATHER!" yelled Yu Peiyu who couldn't control himself anymore.  He rushed up onto the platform and continued yelling, "HE IS AN IMPOSTER!"151

Lin Shoujuan chided, "Peiyu!  You have gone mad!"152

The Dragonking of Taihu and Ximen Feng tried to block Yu, but he pushed them out of his way.  While he was still shouting he raised his palm and pushed out towards 'Yu Fanghe'.  As he was still pushing he felt a soft, gentle energy pushing back and he was repelled several meters back.153

Ximen, Shen, and Lin quickly took advantage of the opportunity and held on to Yu Peiyu tightly.154

Abbot Tianyun frowned and said, "This young man is truly too rash."155

"Who's disciple is he?" questioned Reverend Chuchen.156

"My name is Yu Peiyu." he said with tears in his eyes.157

Abbot Tianyun turned to Yu Fanghe and asked, "This young mand is your son?"158

"This boy..he...he..." said Yu Fanghe ending with a sigh.159

Reverend Chuchen chimed in and began to berate Yu as well, "How can you behave so rudely in front of your seniors?"160

"He is not my father!" Yu Peiyu said trying to struggle, "My father is dead!  I was there when he died..."161

Abbot Tianyun and Reverend Chuchen looked at each other both very confused.162

"The poor child has gone insane." said Wang Yuluo with a sigh.163

Xie Tianbi added with a nod, "This young man is indeed strange.  This morning he accused me of killing his father.  That is impossible since I only arrived a couple of days ago.  Fortunately master Yu is here now.  This is truly a most unfortunate tragedy."164

After hearing this even the people who believed Yu Peiyu's claims began to shake their heads in disbelief.  These people could either believe the words of a group of well respected martial artists or those of a rash young man.  The answer was obvious and Yu Peiyu quickly noticed how everyone was looking at him with compassion and sadness in their eyes.  He began to cry because he realized that nobody believed him.  He instantly knew that nobody could help him and that now he had no way get revenge for his father.165

Lin Shoujan, taking advantage of the situation, noticed that nobody believed Yu Peiyu and fiercely said, "This child has no respect for his father or for any of his seniors.  He has wicked intentions and his crimes are unforgivable.  Nobody in Wulin can pleade for him anymore, I see no other choice but to place righteousness above familial loyalty.  I will gladly kill him myself."  Yu Peiyu's own future father-in-law couldn't tolerate him anymore as he drew his sword and aimed for Yu Peiyu.166

"Stop right now!" someone shouted.167

All of the sudden Lin Shoujuan couldn't move his hand anymore.  When looked down he noticed that Hong Lianhua had grabbed his wrist.168

"Master Hong Lian, why are you helping this unfilial child?" he asked in surprise.169

Hong Lianhua ignored him and patted Yu Peiyu on the shoulder laughing, "This joke of yours is a little over the top, but it was very convincing."170

Everyone was stunned and Lin Shoujuan began to stammer, "Joke...what joke?"171

Hong Lianhua said, "Every single one of these Wulin gatherings have been too serious and have really lacked entertainment.  This time I thought of an idea to bring a bit of fun."172

Abbot Tianyun, reverend Chuchen and many others just stood there with surprised looks on their faces not saying anything.173

Hong Lianhua unsealed Yu's acupoints subtly by patting him on the back with a smile, "The joke is over now, you can tell the truth."174

"Yes..yes..." replied Yu Peiyu lowering his head.  He went to Yu Fanghe and as he knelt down he lifted his head, "Please forgive me father!  I was too rude." he said while he kowtowed.175

Yu Fanghe's face had turned pale, "You...you..this is too much..."176

"Your father has forgiven you, you can get up now." said Hong Lianhua177

Everyone was smiling now because of the joke, which they thought was quite funny, except for Yu Fanghe, Wang Yuluo and the others who came with them.  They were all fuming now.178

Xie Tianbi said in a chuckle, "Brother Hong Lian, I should have guessed you were behind this joke."179

"Of course!  Who else would dare to put such an idea in his head that you were the murderer of his father?"180

Xian Tianbi laughed loudly.181

Yu Fanghe coughed, "This son...he is..."  Yu Fanghe realized he couldn't do anything other than sigh and cough at this point.182

Hong Lianhua help Yu to his feet, "I am the one that put you up to this, I am sorry that you have to kneel."183

"Just a minute!" interjected Lin Shoujuan, "The gathering at Lake Huang is a serious matter.  How can we allow such nonsense to go unpunished?  What he did cannot be forgiven just because he knelt down and kowtowed to his father!"184

"What do suggest Mr. Lin?" Hong Lianhua calmly asked.185

"Just for being rude to his seniors is grave enough to nullify his martial arts and ban him from his school and family."186

Hong Lianhua simply smirked, "Mr. Lin, since when have you become the new chancellor of Wulin?"187

Lin Shoujuan began to stutter obviously stunned, "No, I..."188

"Are you the father of brother Peiyu?" Hong Lianhua softly continued.189

"No, I am not."190

Hong Lianhua suddently became very serious, "In that case, who are you to give orders around on the platform at the gathering of Lake Huang?"  Hong Lianghua's eyes were boring into Lin Shoujuan who had too look away.  When he took his eyes off of Lin Shoujuan Hong Lianghua look around at everyone else saying, "This was my idea in the first place.  If any of you think that it was a bad idea, thats fine!  I will gladly pay for it, punish me or strike me please!"191

The Beggar's Association had been in existence for more than 800 years now, and had thousands of disciples.  Although Hong Lianhua was young nobody in Wulin would dare to question his martial arts, intelligence and fame.  Nobody would dare to punish or even lay a hand on him.192

Jueqing Zi wasn't concerned at all, and Madame Hai Tang, being wise, remained silent.193

Yu Xuan smiled and said, "In my opinion brother Hong Lian just played a harmless joke.  There is nothing to fuss about.  We should maybe even thank him and invite him for some wine for providing such entertainment."194

Hong Lianhua smiled, pleased with what he heard, and turned to abbot Tianyun, "What do you think, reverend?"195

Abbot Tianyun frowned and turned to Yu Fanghe, "Brother Yu, I think you should deal with this incident."196

Yu Fanghe remained silent for a while.  After some time a sharp voice called out from the crowd, "Even a tiger won't eat his own cubs!"197

Yu Fanghe's face changed and with a wry smile he said, "So be it!  Since master Hong Lian has pleaded on his behalf I will let the matter rest."198

Everyone was happy that the incident was solved and cheered.199

Hong Lianhua took this opportunity to whisper to Mei Simang, "Find who the person that shouted out was."  As Mei Simang quietly left the platform Hong Lianhua thanked Yu Fanghe.200

Yu Peiyu looked at Hong Lianhua with gratitude in his eyes.  He bowed four times to Hong and then left the platform.  Lin Shoujuan, Ximen Feng, and the rest of their group were watching Yu Peiyu, but there was nothing they could do.  The rest of the heroes all smiled as they watched Yu Peiyu coming down.201

The young master of the divine sabre softly cursed in his own dialect, but it was loud enough for Jin Yanzi to hear.  She coldly rebuked him, "He is the sone of the new chancellor of Wulin.  When it comes to martial arts and prestige he is far, far above you.  I advise you not to antagonize him."202

The young master of the divine sabre gritted his teeth furiously.203

Yu Peiyu didn't turn around to look at anyone.  He was absolutely lost and had no idea what to do.  All he wanted was to get away from everyone.  As everyone was leaving there was a large croud with everyone pushing each other around.  Yu was making his way toward the exit when he felt something prick him in the side.  He suddenly began to push people aside almost in a panic.  Becuase of his tremendous strength and abundant internal energy all of the people he pushed fell on the ground.  Many of them cursed and yelled at Yu Peiyu, but he was beyond caring anymore.  All he wanted to do was to find some solitude and rest.204

When he reached a remote and desolate enough place he sat down on a rock.  He felt the sweat dripping from his back and reached back to wipe it away.  When he looked again he saw that his hand was covered with blood.  Yu Peiyu realized that that somebody had tried to kill him in the crowd.  Fortunately he pushed out and wanted to get away, otherwisee...205

Yu Peiyu broke out in a cold sweat at this terrifying thought.  After everything he had been through he was now completely exhausted and disillusioned.206

As he sat there he began to think about all of the strange things that had recently happened to him, about Hong Lianhuaīs friendship.  He also thought about the killer of his father, and how he now had to acknowledge an imposter as his "father".  All of these thoughts made him both angry and sad.207

Yu Peiyu could hardly believe that he had even been able to manage to put a smile on his face.  Now he couldnīt hold his tears back; his father was dead, his home was gone, and all of his friends and relatives had completely deserted.  The only thing that kept him going and that would keep him going in the future is his desire to uncover the truth.  He decided that he would not die until he figured out exactly what was going on.208

Having made his decision he got up and began to walk.  While he was strolling he heard three people trying to sneak up on him.  When he turned around he saw three shadows quickly dart behind a large rock.  Yu Peiyu pretended like he didnīt notice them and kept on walking, but at a slower pace.  The three shadows took this opportunity and launched a quick and vicious attack with sabres at Yu Peiyuīs back.  At precisely the right moment Yu Peiyu bent forward and kicked backward hearing a scream as he made contact.  One of the attackers was thrown away, while the other two began to abandon their attack.  Yu Peiyu struck one of the remaining attackers on the back with his fist as he began to run.  He ran a couple more paces before he collapsed to the ground.  The only remaining attacker realized that he had no hope of escaping so he turned around to fight.  He raised his sabre and began a vicious hack at Yu, but he easily caught the manīs wrist.  The attacker quickly switched his attack and threw punch towardīs Yu with his other hand, but Yu merely caught the strike in his other hand.  209

The agressor wasnīt a weak fighter, but for some reason around Yu Peiyu his martial arts had degenerated into nothing.  Yu clamped down with both his hands and exerted a squeezing force causing the man to start sweating and eventually he began to cry out.  210

Yu Peiyu began to question him, "Who sent you?  Tell me, and I will let you live."211

Managing a laugh the man said, "You will never know."  As his laughter died out his face began to turn an ugly green.212

Yu Peiyu quickly took his pulse and realized that it was too late.  While Yu stood there the manīs face continued to turn several different colors before his flesh began to dissolve.  Yu noticed that the poison was similar to the poison that killed Hei Gezi at the beginning of his problems.  It was obvious that these men were sent by the same evil mastermind.  He quickly went to check the other two men, but they were both already dead.  Yu realized that he had used too much strength during their combat.213

He began to scratch an itch in his hands as he looked up at the sky and sighed deeply.  While he looked he realized that the itch began to get increasingly worse and he knew that something was wrong.  He looked at his hands and saw that his fingers were swollen and his palms were black.  The itch was already turning into numbness and was creeping up his arms.  He tried picking up one of the sabres but his hands didnīt seem to want to obey him.  With great difficulty he finally managed to pick one up with the intent to chop one of his hands off.  As he was about to realize his goal a flying object struck the sabre in his hands and knocked it away from him.  Two tall figures slowly emerged from the bushes with black cloth tied around their faces, concealing their identity.  One appeared to be very skinny and tall, and the other was very muscular.214

"Go ahead and scratch!  Scratching will make it feel much better" the skinny man evilly sneered.215

Yu Peiyu in great discomfort finally couldnīt resist and scratched, but stopped quickly made himself stop.  "In the end I couldnīt escape your treachery" he yelled, "why donīt you just kill me now!"216

The skinny man replied, "So now you realize you canīt escape?  Just a moment ago you were feeling all high and mighty after beating those three."217

"Those three were sent to die," scoffed the muscular man "why else would we send three useless, expendable fools to deal with you?"218

The skinny man continued explaining, "We knew that you would investigate their bodies after you were finished, so we sprinkled poisonous powder on their clothes.  When you touched them you were poisoned, and now...with each scratch the poison will spread even faster."219

"Now that your hands are too swollen to fight, are you still arrogant enough to try and strike us?"220

These two men were joking around and making fun of Yu Peiyu in order antagonize him even more.  The plan that they had devised was ingenious.  No matter how careful a person could be it was virtually impossible to escape from it.  221

In his anger Yu Peiyu burst out, "What kind of monsters are you?  How can you send your own people to their deathīs just for your own selfish gain!?"222

"These three men were willing to die for the master and his cause." the skinny man said with a haughty look, "Even their families will feel honored by what they have done."223

"When you die, though, nobody is even going to miss you.  Nobody is going to even know you are dead, they are just going to think that you are traveling and seeing the world."224

Yu Peiyu was now feeling very cold as he smiled bitterly, "Not even in my wildest dreams would I have ever thought someone so evil existed in this world..."  225

Yu Peiyu finally collapsed from the effects of the poison.  226

With a laugh the skinny man said, "That is just how the world of martial arts is.  I hack at you with my sabre, you stab me with your sword.  It is only a matter of who will die first."227

The muscular man said with faint smile, "Amusing, very amusing."  Both of them each grabbed a sabre and began to walk toward Yu Peiyu.228

"I am about to die, canīt you at least tell me who this mastermind is?"229

The skinny man said, "Iīm afraid you are destined to become a muddle-headed ghost."230

"Its not that we donīt want to tell you, but the truth is we donīt know who he is either." said the muscular man who suddenly jumped to one side with a scream, "Snake...a snake!"  Just as quickly he fell to the grown.231

The skinny man noticed a snake biting him and then saw two more snakes coming for him.  He quickly avoided the snakes and then said to the muscular man, "I will take care of your family, you can die in peace."  He raised his sabre and hacked the muscular man in the face and then left.  232

In his dying breath the muscular man was heard to say, "I feel so honoured to be able to die for the master and his cause."233

Yu Peiyu watched all of this in amazment before he finally fainted away lost in darkness.234

Much to his surprise Yu Peiyu gradually began to wake.  The itching has subsided, but he could still feel some pain and he couldnīt move.  He felt very woozy as looked around and noticed through a haze an old man with a long silvery, white beard standing in front of him.  As he studied the old man he began to recognize his features which made him happy.  In a small voice he said, "Mei Sim..."235

The old man was in fact Mei Simang of the Beggars Association.  He turned to Yu Peiyu saying gently, "Donīt move!  My little friends are sucking the poison out of your body."236

Yu looked and saw four little snakes attached to his body.237

Mei Simang was looking at his snakes like a proud parent admiring his own children.  "Arenīt they cute?"238

After almost being killed by 5 ruthlessmen and one devious plot, these snakes indeed seemed very cute.  Yu Peiyu managed a small smile, and for the first time in a very long time he felt relaxed.  He thought maybe Mei Simang might know the identity of his attackers.  Judging from their martial arts both of them must have been famous people.  Since Mei Simang was a knowledgable Wulin senior there was a good chance he might recognize them.239

Mei Simang saw the thoughtfulness etched on Yuīs face and immediately knew what he was thinking, "It could be that I knew that man," he sighed "but unfortunately the other man deliberatley mutilated his face, so that we wouldnīt be able to trace his identity.  Such viciousness is seldom seen."240

With a sigh Yu Peiyu closed his eyes.  It seems that this lead was empty too.241

"I carefully examined, and searched the clothes of those men, but I couldnīt find any clues that would reveal their identity.  Not only are they cunning, but they are very cautious as well."  When he finished speaking he looked down Yuīs hands and nodded.  He whistled softly and the snakes let go slithering slowly back to him.  "Good job little ones!  You can rest now."  The snakes seemed to understand him and slithered back into a sack.  242

"Luckily the poison didnīt enter your body through a wound, otherwise their might have been some serious problems.  You just need a good rest."243

Yu Peiyu wanted to thank Mei Simang, but he knew that those simple words could never repay the kindess of Mei Simang and would probably end up insulting him in the process.  He seemed happy to help anyways.  244

"I donīt know if the gathering has finished," continued Mei Simang, "if it is over master Hong Lian wishes to speak with you."245

"I wonīt go"246

"Why?"247

"I donīt want to drag the Beggarīs Association into my family problems."248

With a smile Mei Simang replied, "Master Hong Lian is not the sort of man who is afraid of a little trouble."249

Yu Peiyu conceded and reluctantly follows Mei Simang.250

"I think I heard cheers earlier, so the ceremony is probably over with the new Chancellor of Wulin inducted.  Now that this is done the peace of Wulin has been secured."251

"Is it really secure?" Peiyu asked bitterly.252

"I hope so"253

The celebration feast for the new leader of Wulin had just begun as they arrived.  They worked their way instead to Hong Lianhuaīs tent which had nobody guarding the outside.  As they approached a deep and powerful voice from the inside said, "Who is there?" startling Yu Peiyu.  Hong Lianhuaīs voice asked in reply, "Has father Mei returned?  Did you bring back our little lost sheep?"254

Both of them entered the tent and saw a majestic elderly Taoist priest sitting next to Hong Lianhua.  The Taoist priest merely sat very straight and examined Yu Peiyu with his radiant eyes.  255

The grandeur of the Taoist priest was so great, that Yu Peiyu had to lower his head.  256

Hong Lianhua laughed, "Youīre finally here.  Do you recognize this reverend?"257

"Is he the leader of the Kunlun School?"258

Clapping his hands Hong Lianhua praised Yu Peiyu, "Very good!  reverend Tiangang didnīt say a word when you entered and yet you were able to recognize him."  Hong Lianhua then turned to Mei Simang and addressed him, "What kind of poison did those men use, and who were they?"259

As he lowered his head Mei Simang replied, "The identities of those men remains unknown and I donīt recognize the poison, however..."260

While he continued to explain everything to Hong Lianhua, the reverend Tiangang stood up and moved over to Yu Peiyu sealing the 12 major acupoints of his arms with lightning speed.  He put a pill in Yuīs mouth saying, "Donīt move for the next hour."261

Without replying Yu swallowed the pill and reverend Tiangang returned to his seat with the same alarming quickness.  Remaining quiet Yu Peiyu was surprised by this display as he noticed Mei Simang lower his head deeper before to say, "I..I thought..."262

"You thought you had removed all of the poison from brother Peiyuīs body?"  Hong Lianhua said with a sigh.263

"I saw that..."264

"If it wasnīt for reverend Tiangangīs Diamond Finger and Gold Dissolving Pill brother Peiyuīs arms would have been lost."265

Yu Peiyu was shaken by what heard while Mei Simang had a terribly ashamed look on his face.266

"Earlier I asked you to find out who the person that shouted something to Yu Fanghe was.  Have you found anything out?" Continued Hong Lianhua.267

Mei Simang replied, "I asked several people, but noone paid any attention to that person.  They only know that he wore a black robe.268

Hong Lianhua began to frown, "A black robe..."  Of all the people who were attending Wulin, almost half of them were wearing something black.  Hong Lianhua turned to Tiangang and asked, "What do you think, reverend?"269

"An unknown poison, unknown assassins, and a devious plot with no flaws."270

"Could that mystrious black-robed man belong to the Xiantian Wuji School?" asked Hong Lianhua.271

"Even if he isnīt a disciple he must have ties to the school."272

"If you are saying that Yu Fanghe, Wang Yuluo, Lin Shoujuan and other prominent Wulin heroes are behind this evil plot nobody will believe it.  Their chivalrous and benevolent deeds over the last 20 years werenīt fake, however if we say that they have nothing to do with this conspiracy that doesnīt make any sense either."273

Yu Peiyu said, "Their fame is real, but these men are imposters."274

With a disappointed smile Hong Lianhua replied, "I carefully exmined their faces and movements.  They arenīt wearing masks or disguises.  Even if they were no one could be so accurate in immitating someone elses mannerisms.  If they were really disguised and wearing masks how could they have fooled abbot Tianyun, reverend Chuchen, and many others who have been friends with them for many years?"275

Yu Peiyu had forgotten about the other people like Lin Shoujuan, and Wang Yuluo.  He slowly lowered his head in disappointment.  He thought about his father and how lifelike the man who impersonates him is.  If he hadnīt seen his real father die he would surely believe that this Yu Fanghe was in fact his own father.  Who could he really be?276

Mei Simang suggested, "Could it be that these people were hyptnotized and are under someone elses control?  I remember that something similar happened many years ago in Wulin."277

Hong Lianhua dismissing his idea replied, "No, hypnotized men behave artificially, and very differently.  These men seem to behave quite naturally.  They donīt seem to be hypnotized at all."278

Reverend Tiangang rumbled, "A very cunning plan with no flaws"279

Hong Lianhua said thoughtfully, "If we say these men are imposters they seem too real and yet if they arenīt imposters their actions are questionable.  Whether or not they are following someone elseīs orders or are following their own dark agenda, they have been able to successfully become the leaders of Wulin.  This is a very disconcerting situation.  Besides the four of us everyone else believes that their intentions are pure and good."  with a wry smile he added, "This has to be the most deadly masterful plan ever devised in the history of Wulin."280

Looking even more serious than before Reverend Tiangang said, "Young master Yu is our only chance of defeating their plan."281

"Because of this his life is in peril." voiced Hong Lianhua, "If anything happens to him..."282

Mei Simang interrupted with a question, "But this Yu Fanghe has acknowledged that young master Yu is his son, how could he consider killing him now?"283

"It will be very difficult for him to leave Wulin on his own.  We are going to have to..."284

Once again Hong Lianhua was interrupted, this time by Reverend Tiangang, "Do you know what the worst thing that could happen right now?"285

"Have you thought of something reverend?" frowned Hong Lianhua.286

"If this happened, young master Yu would surely die..."  287

Suddenly they all heard a loud voice calling from outside, "Is reverend Tiangang here?  Chancellor Yu would like to speak with him."288

Reverend Tiangangīs face darkened, "I will be back shortly." He immediately got up and walked outside.  289

Even more worried Hong Lianghua said, "Reverend Tiangang must have thought of something important.  What could he have thought of?"290

Mei Simang softly spoke, "What a frightnening plot!  At this point things are already dangerous, can it possibly get any worse?  Young master Yu sure is in a lot of trouble."291

"I know that I am pushed into deathīs corner and even if I donīt die Iīll probably go mad.  All things considered, I will be greatful to the people who have believed me and helped me until the day I die." said Yu Peiyu sadly.292

Hong Lianhua didnīt know what to say as he shook his head.293

"I donīt know how to thank you, master Hong Lian." continued  Yu expressing his gratitude, "Everyone thinks I am a madman.  Why do you believe me?"294

"There is a reason..."  He reached into his robe and pulled out a beatifully embroided pouch and opened it.  Inside was an old piece of paper which he handed to Yu.  "Read it and you will understand."295

Yu thought it was wierd that such an old piece of paper would be kept inside such a beautiful pouch.  On the piece of paper he saw only a few written characterīs that said, "Believe in Yu Peiyu and help Yu Peiyu."  It looked like those characters had been written in haste.  Yu handed the letter to Mei Simang to see as well.  296

"Who wrote this letter?"297

With a strangely sad look on his face Hong Liangua replied, "Your fiancé."298

"Lin Daiyu?  Do you know her?" said Yu Peiyu in surprise without noticing the look on Hong Lianhuaīs face.299

Hong Lianhua nodded, "Three days ago I met her near Shangqiu while she was travelling with her father, Lin Shoujuan, and Wang Yuluo.  I have known her for a long time, but for some reason on that day she didnīt seem to recognize me anymore."300

"You have known each other for a long time?"301

Hong Lianhua smiled, "You havenīt been out much have you?  That must be why you donīt know many names in Wulin.  Lin Daiyu has been roaming Wulin since the age of 13 and each year since then she has quietly left her home and has done many chivalrous deeds.  She is now quite famous."302

Remembering her strong personality and good swordsmanship Yu Peiyu couldnīt help but sigh, "She is very different from me.  She is much stronger."303

"She used to be a very open and straightforward person, but that particular day she seemed very different.  From then on I began to suspect that something was wrong.  I ordered the disciples of Shangqiu to talk to the innkeeper of the inn that she was staying at.  A disciple disguised himself as one of the waiters.  Luckily she saw through the disguise and handed the disciple the pouch containing this letter."304

"No wonder that day Old Song Si hurriedly came to see you master." exclaimed Mei Simang, "He seemed to have some sort of urgent news."305

Yu Peiyu sat there silenty for awhile before softly saying, "She is used to roaming Wulin, and wasnīt at home when something happened at her house."306

A change went over Hong Lianhuaīs face, "Something happened at her house too?  So this Lin Shoujuan is also..."307

"This Lin Shoujuan is also an imposter," nodded Yu Peiyu "but that day..." Yuīs voice slowly trailed off into a sigh.  He remembered when Lin Daiyu told him what happened, "I thought she was also part of the conspiracy.  She knew then that this was an evil plot and she even played along with the imposters in order to avoid suspicion.  After all this time I now realize that she and I are walking the same path.  She is 10 times more intelligent than I."308

"Of all the men and women I have met, she is the most intelligent person I have seen" said Hong Lianhua in agreement.309

"Lin Shoujuan is an imposters, I wonder why he doesnīt kill her.  Judging from the situation she must be detained by them.  Iīm afraid..."310

I like this...but then I like short spurts of story, easier to read than trying to read a full chapter on one page..after a while it's hard to stick with it. Short parts of the story..even if not full chapters are great.
    It's getting good.
