It all started with Michael Rosa. Sarah Mills' first love. Freshmen and Junior at the high school in Hamlet, North Carolina. They would spend endless days under the clap of thunder dancing and kissing in the rain. That beautiful rain that's cool against your lips while the weather was so warm and windy. Perfect. But as you know, all good things come to an end. When the end of July came around, Michael had to move to Virginia, where it wasn't very probable they would see eachother again.1
Many guys came and passed for Sarah, asking her to the dance, to dinner, to the movies..most anything. She loved the new freedom, but didn't want to throw herself at those guys, they only wanted one thing and a certain feeling of apathy to love arose once Michael left. She didn't really want him to come back anyway, she would find someone else eventually.2
"Oh, I'm so excited, she's going to be so surprised!" Michael said happily, his feet kicked up on the dashboard, despite the complaints from his mother. "I haven't seen her in months! I hope she's not too mad that I haven't talked to her since I got there. Hopefully she'll be too happy to be worried about that!" Michael laughed and turned up the already blasting music. He hadn't had one date or girlfriend because he knew he was going to visit in a few months of moving. He could have his girl back, and he prayed she would be just as stoked.3
Sarah was sleeping soundly with her face covered by a book as boring as the day is long. She had come to page 98 out of 372 when she dozed off, and now someone was loudly rapping at the door with the half-broken gold heart shaped knocker. Sarah was roused from her sleep with fright as she jumped up to look through the peephole. It was Michael, he was unshaved(which made her laugh), and was dressed untidily in his famous ripped jeans and a band T-shirt.
She contemplated pretending she wasn't home, but seeing as he probably heard her come up to the door, that wasn't a possibility. "I don't want to see you!" She yelled loud, making sure he could hear her.4
Michael's face fell, and his mouth made different movements, trying to find words. Once they finally came, he mustered up a voice loud enough for his words to reach her ears. "Baby, Please listen to me!" He put his hand to the door and drew his face closer, bringing down his voice some. "I love you! I couldn't talk to you because we were so busy settling in the new house!" He pounded his hand on the door. "I'm sorry Sarah!" His arms fell limp and he took a step back, waiting for a reply.5
Sarah wanted to just break down the door and tell him off. That was bull. He had enough time to call her for 5 minutes telling her he got there safe, and he knew a few minutes is all she asked. But no, he hadn't picked up the phone for her in 3 months. "You're so full of it, Mike!" She screamed louder than necessary. "I don't even want to see your face again! Never!" She was careful that the crying didn't show through her speech. "I hate you Michael Dean Rosa!" 6
Michael was taken aback by those three words. She hated him. "Sarah.." He said "I'm sorry Sarah." just loud enough for her to hear and turned around, walking down the ugly concrete steps, heading off her parent's small strip of property. The pieces of his heart seemed to be taken by the wind, one by one, with each step he took down the concrete path. He kicked a pole outside her house. Hard. His girl was gone, she was going to be with other guys that weren't him. He went to open the gate.7
Sarah opened the door a little and watched him leave. His head had fallen low, looking at the ground as he dragged his feet away from her yard. She looked at him with the saddest feeling of sympathy as she saw him mope around. She went to sit back down on the couch and read her book. With every page, Michael's appearance of sadness entered her mind, and she frowned. She had to get him back, and apologize...She loved him. She opened the door harshly and started to make her way down the steps "Wait!" She cried, running down the path as fast as she could, nearly tripping over her pink slippers and her too-long, starred pajama pants. "Wait! Michael!" She shook as she undid the fence's lock through blurred vision. "Michael!" She ran down the road, trying to catch up to him as he opened the door to his mom's car too many blocks away for her to catch his eye.8
Michael tuned out the rest of the world and turned on his ipod and got into the car. "She yelled at me," He said in monotone. "said she never wanted to see me again." He stared at his ipod and shrugged. "Oh, It's alright..." His mom said, gently putting her hand on his shoulder. He normally would have shrugged it off, but this time he didn't. He had gone all this way to spend the week with her, and she yelled at him and said she hated him. "Way to go, Mike." He mumbled to himself in a sarcastic tone and put his head in his hands, his mother driving slowly down the road. "You can spend the week at your father's house instead..." His mom started to speak again. "I'll drive down here Saturday and come get you. You need to spend time with your father anyway.." She said in a very sad tone, Sarah was the best thing to happen to Michael, everyone saw that. "No..I just want to go home.." He said, head still in his hands, voice muffled. Her mother raised her head to look at the rear view mirror, noticing Sarah, and smiling. "Oh, I don't think you will.."9
Sarah had kept running, not slowing down from more than a second. She had supposed that her feet could carry her this far because she was on the track team, but it was harder than she thought. "Michael!!" She had yelled every few minutes to unhearing ears riding in the blue car quite a bit in front of her, drifting farther by the second. "Michael!" The only word leaving her lips for the past minutes of running. Tears were falling down her cheeks, the salty taste reaching her tongue every time she called his name.10
Michael looked up and asked his mom what she could possibly be talking about. She pointed to the rear view mirror and had a small smile. He straightened himself up to look through the mirror on the side of the car. He saw her, pajamas and all, chasing the car unsuccesfully, her arms flailing and tears rolling down her face. He was so concerned and he told his mom urgently to stop the car. The door opened wide as he jumped out of the still-stopping car and ran out to catch her.11
Sarah looked ahead, seeing Michael get out of the car quickly. Maybe he had come back to tell her to stop chasing him and making an idiot out of herself, or simply saying he would never forgive her for saying what she did. "I'm sorry!" She yelled, running faster to catch him before he could reach her. She was but about a foot away when her too-long pajama bottoms betrayed her. She had caught her heel on the leg of them and she fell abrubtly forward into his arms. "I'm sorry!" She straightened herself up and pulled back from him a little. "I didn't know what I was saying" She held her head down, not bringing herself to look at him. "I'm so sorry, and If you can't forgive me, I unders--"12
Michael interupted "It's alright", smiling at her muttering. He softly held her face in his hands, wiping her tears with his thumb. "You had a right to be mad" He smiled, kissing her softly. "Never think I'll leave you, don't even let the thought cross your mind.." He took her back in his arms, holding her tight. "I love you"
