Creation Mischief Part 15

“Not much really. The histories are sketchy and incomplete at best. Here.” Kyle lifted three books off the first stack, checked the titles before setting them off to one side, creating another stack. The fourth book he handled seemed to be the right one. Kyle handed me a red leather bound book. The lettering was ornamental scroll, colored in silver. The title read Serpents and the subspecies of said animal I didn’t think that was a very good title.1

“What am I looking for?” I asked. 2

He rested his chin in his calloused hand before answering, “Page 1079, section 7, paragraph 18.”3

I leafed through the pages, drawings flickered as the pages flipped through my fingers. 1079 came into view with a magnificent colored drawing of a flying dragon. Its iridescent green and blue scales shown sharply against the white of the page, as I studied the detailed description written at the side of the page. The wingspan can reach the length of a one or two full grown dragon species, depending on the type.4

‘For DRAGONS of the SKY, wingspan is approximately two and a half full grown male bodies. The membranes seem to be made of an elastic material, which bends with the air currents. Females are only slightly smaller. But when carrying eggs she will be the same weight as the males. Wing span is around the same.5

The veins or blood vessels run through the tough membranes, creating a strange map between hollow bones.6

SEA DRAGONS or Sea Serpents, also called Sea Monsters have smaller wings. Sometimes those said wings have morphed into flippers.7

These beasts can range the length of a clipper ship, 150 to 250 feet. Its body is sleek and slim, for cutting through the waves easily.8

Color ~ Air born dragons range in color from red to green. The red is a molten mix of orange and yellow, giving them a fire appearance.9

The green beasts have the appearance of a lush old growth forest with scattering of umber here and there.10

The mountains in the shadows, is the purple color that falls in between red and green. A shimmering depth of purple, a deep lake and the vivid color of a young dragonfly.11

The colors of a Sea Dragon tend to stay in the water colors. They range from the deep emerald green of the craters, to the ivory ice caps of the glaciers. In between, there is a green-blue hue shown in the light, along side aquamarine serpents.12

The sleek body of said creatures was seen gliding through the waves like a bird on the air currents.13

Nothing has been found on their eating habit or that of air born dragons. Further study is needed.
14

I flipped the page. It lead into a description of a lower class serpent.15

“So, that’s it?” I asked after shutting the book and clenching it to my chest.16

Kyle took the book from me and laid it down on the floor at our feet. “Yep, that’s all so far.”17

“It’s not really much, is it? I mean how long do they live? How do they communicate? Do they communicate? Is Quinn unique? I wish there was more.”18

Kyle sat back, resting folded hands on his taunt stomach. “These books you see piled here are the product of my four hour search. This is the only reference I’ve found.”19

I motioned to the new stack of books Carmen had dropped earlier. “And those?”20

Kyle glanced around the side of the chair. “Well, obviously I haven’t searched those.”21

“Don’t be a pain.”22

He settled back down in the cushioned seat, giving the appearance of relaxing, but I could see his jaw clenched. Kyle was silent.23

“Come on Kyle, after everthing you’d hold out on me?" I leaned forward to pick up theard-bare. There was no title.24

Kyle snatched it up before I could open it. “It’s nothing.”25

I was stunned for a moment, but I shook it off. The anger I buried from last night bubbled to the surface. It was like the simple experiments we constructed in Master Ivan’s scientific studies class. It was an abhorrently boring class, but for blowing objects up. When adding vinegar and a simple soda used for baking together, the contents fizzed over. This caused a reaction from all that witnessed it. This was my anger, a mixture of baking soda and vinegar.26

“What are you hiding?" I demanded.27

Kyle sat the book down on the newest stack, his movements guarded. “It’s nothing, really. Just a side project.”28

“Then why are you hiding it from me?”29

Hurriedly he responded, “I’m not hiding anything from you.”30

“Is that so?” I folded my arms. “It seems to me that you are. My reasoning comes from the fact that you practically ripped that book from my hands.”31

“Really, it’s nothing. Now what’s the secret you had to share?” Kyle asked, abruptly changing the subject.32

I shook my head. “Not happening, Kyle. Changing the subject is clever, but I’m not stupid. You will tell me what those books are or my secret stays a secret!” I was not willing to negotiate.33

His clear blue eyes searched my face. I could see him looking for a weakness. He wasn’t going to find one. I’d worked hard in Year One. Being the only female in a class of fifty-seven males tended to make one stronger, harder then most.34

Finally, he looked away.35

I glanced away, trying to squash the disappointment I felt. The strong scent of old leather and freshly crushed herbs reminded the angry me, we were still in a library. The second level library to be exact.36

A weight on my knees brought me back to the fortress Kyle had built of books. It was the same book I had picked up before.37

I opened the stiff cover. It creaked as I pushed it flat. On the crisp first page the title read The History behind the Quinns, Volume One. I shivered and the hairs on my arms stood up. I reached my left hand over to my right arm, giving it a vigorous rub. 38

I glanced at Kyle. He met my eyes briefly before looking away. “I’ve not read any of it.”39

Before I could even turn the next page, an out of breath young messenger interrupted us. His plain brown tunic was belted at his waist. We waited patiently while he caught his breath.40

I smiled as I watched his dirty feet danced around, as if already off on his next assignment.41

Finally he spoke, “Master Ruben summons you to his study, immediately.” When he was finished he raced off.42

“I guess this will have to wait.” I glanced at the title of the next book of the new stack, Emotions and Growth, Volume Two: New Development. “Interesting reading you’ve chosen. What are the other two?”43

Kyle waved a hand. “Just books on sea snakes. I thought they might give us an idea what more Quinn might be like. To me he resembles a very large snake.”44

I nodded while replying, “You might be right. We’d better get going. Mastercreator Ruben hates to be kept waiting.”45

“Too bad we can’t take these with us. I don’t spend much time here, so I’ve never borrowed a locker. Where’s your?” He asked, picking up the four books.46

“Well, not in the second level library, that’s for sure. This way,” I said while handing the book I was holding to him. Our fingers touched briefly and it reminded me of the earlier kiss. My cheeks instantly got hot. The kiss was nice. I had no other experience to compare it to, but I wouldn’t have minded a second kiss then. My stomach fluttered.47

Twin spots of red appeared on Kyle’s cheeks; brightening his already sun burnt face. He must have been thinking the same thing because suddenly he was close to me, leaning in. His lips brushed mine, gently at first. It was barely a contact, just a tease. I wasn’t satisfied, so I leaned in. My toes curled again and the fluttering in stomach erupted into a full blown tidal wave. No gentle butterfly wings for my stomach. I wrapped my hands behind his neck, while I felt the heat of his hand on the small of my back.48

It was just as wonderful as I remembered from the first time. Besides the stomach issues and the toes curling, my ability to think beyond the moment was lost. It was as if I couldn’t breathe, as if I wouldn’t breathe again, but my survival instincts kicked in and I pulled back.49

Our lips broke contact and the warmth seeped away slowly. I instantly regretted stopping the kiss, but didn’t know how to initiate it again without being awkward.50

I wiped below my lower lip with my finger before leaving my thumb between my teeth. I looked at Kyle through lowered lashes. I wasn’t embarrassed by what had just happened but I wanted to be modest.51

Kyle cleared his throat. “We’d better go.”52

I nodded and grabbed his hand. I guess it was official. We were an item.

    Brooke !

I know I haven't read any of this piece in a long while. What's odd about that is that I still remember everything that's going on...almost as if I finished reading chapter 14 yesterday. Amazing.

My favorite line in this was the last. I could imagine how uncomfortable they must have looked while they debated on the issue of the kiss. Was it or wasn't it official? Well, now the reader knows.

I love how the plot is developing and the characters are too. I wonder what Mastercreator Ruben is going to tell them? I also liked the use of titles throughout this piece. The first was definitely not a very good title.

As always, I enjoyed myself tremendously and look forward to the next part.

    Suggestions:

Par 4: I leafed through the pages, drawings flickered as the pages [they] flipped through my fingers. / The wingspan can reach the length of a [delete ‘a’] one or two full grown [full-grown] dragon species, depending on the type.

If memory serves, for paragraphs 5 through 14, since the dialogue is continuing, you need a beginning quote for each paragraph.

Par 5: ‘For DRAGONS of the SKY, wingspan is approximately two and a half full grown [full-grown] male bodies. / Wing span [Wingspan] is around the same.

Par 8: These beasts can range the length of a clipper ship, 150 to 250 feet. Its body is sleek and slim, for cutting through the waves easily. [The first sentence is plural with ‘these’; the second is singular with ‘its.’]

Par 12: In between, there is a green-blue hue shown in the light, along side [alongside] aquamarine serpents.

Par 15: It lead [led] into a description of a lower class serpent.

Par 18: “I mean [,] how long do they live?”

Par 24: “Come on[,] Kyle, after everthing [everything] you’d hold out on me?" I leaned forward to pick up theard-bare [???].

Par 26: This was my anger, [:] a mixture of baking soda and vinegar.

Par 34: Being the only female in a class of fifty-seven males tended to make one stronger, harder then [than] most.

Par 36: The strong scent of old leather and freshly crushed [freshly-crushed] herbs reminded the angry me, [delete comma] we were still in a library.

Par 40: Before I could even turn the next page, an out of breath [out-of-breath or breathless] young messenger interrupted us.

Par 41: I smiled as I watched his dirty feet danced [dance] around, as if already off on his next assignment.41

    Par 46: “Where’s your [yours]?”

Par 48: Twin spots of red appeared on Kyle’s cheeks; [comma] brightening his already sun burnt [hyphenate?] face. He must have been thinking the same thing because [,] suddenly[,] he was close to me, leaning in. His lips brushed mine, gently at first. It was barely a contact, just a tease. I wasn’t satisfied, so I leaned in. My toes curled again and the fluttering in [my] stomach erupted into a full blown tidal wave.

Par 51: I wasn’t embarrassed by what had just happened [,] but I wanted to be modest.

    Excellent!

sorry, it has been awhile since I have commented... loved this chapter. The info on dragons was cool! and You defintely have the romance thing down...
Now I am off to the next chapter.

    beginning: 5, language: 5, plot: 4, ending: 5, dialog: 5, characters: 5.

  • Morning Brooke, a fun read for those of us who have been following the plot. The young couple are very visible and their conversations and actions are clear .

Quinn of course is lost on anyone who hasn't been keeping up but that's their problem .

    Picked out a few things to look at;

The title read Serpents and (the) subspecies of said animal I didn’t think that was a very good title.1

The wing span (wingspan) can reach the length of a one or two full grown (full-grown) species, depending on the type.4 (query? length of what?—I think you have an incomplete idea here.)

‘For DRAGONS of the SKY, wing span (wingspan) is approximately two and a half full grown (full-grown (perhaps male bodies?) males.

The green (beasts have) gives the appearance of a lush old growth forest with scattering of (umber and gold some kind of color) color here and there.10

The colors of a Sea Dragon tend to stay in the water colors. They range from the( keep?) emerald green of the craters, to the ivory ice caps of the glaciers. In between, there is a green-blue hue shown in the light, along side aquamarine serpents.12

It was brown with a worn spine. The corners were thread bare (thread-bare). There was no title.24

I opened the stiff cover. It creaked as I pushed it flat. On the crisp first page the title read The History behind the Quinn’s, (Quinns)Volume One.

He meet (met)my eyes briefly before looking away. “I’ve not read any of it.”39

“I guess this will have to wait.” I glanced at the title of the nest (next) book of the new stack, Emotions and Growth, Volume Two: New Development. “Interesting reading you’ve chosen. What are the other two?”43

My toes curled again and the fluttering in stomach erupted into a fell (full) blown tidal wave.

At last! Sabrina and Kyle are 'itemised'

A nice little descriptive piece mainly and written in a way that makes it easy to understand and enjoy.

I had to chuckle at the messenger he either had other messages to deliver or was in a hurry to get out of there

As I have come to expect from your writing, a wonderful, leisurely reading experience.

I didn't think it was going to happen, but it did. I really was against it you know. But the story said to make it so, like Captain Pichard, I made it so
      Thanks for the read

    Hey Sage,
Haven't read much of this yet, but this chapter is good enough to make me want to read more. I see that the boo boos have been mentioned. Looking forward to reading more.

  • Small stuff:
    p24. ever - every thing..
P39. meet - met her eyes...

Yes! She finally gave in. Go Kyle.

Looks like they've come across some interesting reading. Not so much the ones Kyle's already read, but the ones in the next pile. The first two sound very interesting.

I'm curious to see what Rubin has called them in for in such a hurry. Will it be about Quinn, or about her mysterious warning from the bushes? Hmm.

Either way, it should prove interesting. As well as Sabrina and Kyle's new 'itemship'. Is that a word? Well it is now. *laughs*

    Next chapter please.

Interesting. I am now 14 parts behind. I like this one though. Has the ingredients of romance and intrigue. bound together with a mystery. What more would a reader's heart desire, besides a happy ending.

Time is the thing. Like most on writing sites, my reading time is limited. Old eyes, the business of living, and writing, interfere with the enjoyment of just reading.
