The sun shone brightly overhead as Isabel and Lucas sat eating their picnic. Seagulls swooped around their heads, and fishes jumped in the river ahead of them. Isabel turned to Lucas, “Baby,” she started, “I have to go back to California for the winter.” He said nothing for a few moments, tears swelling in his blue eyes. “I’ll come back and visit you someday, I promise.” Isabel said, trying to sound reassuring. 1
Lucas knew things would never be the same if he let her go. But he had no choice, for he knew she must go. He had been dreading this talk all summer. Questions played on his mind. Why hadn’t she told him sooner? Why had she ever gone out with him, if she knew she would have to leave him? Pushing all thoughts out of his mind, he held her hand in his and kissed it softly. 2
“Why must you go?” he asked her shakily. 3
“Mom said. I have to go to school for the winter” she replied. 4
She rested her head on his chest and listened to his heart beating powerfully. “I’ll come back on day, I promise you I will” she whispered. 5
“Promise?” he asked her unconvinced. 6
“You take care of your mother and finish school, then when you are all grown up I’ll come and see you. I promise,” she replied.7
And for the rest of that summer the two lovers where entwined in a battle of desire and fate. Isabel had promised to return one day. The day of which she would return rested heavily awaited on Lucas’s mind. They hugged in the sun together and did everything else lovers do. When the day came for Isabel to leave, it was one of the saddest days of Lucas’s life. As she boarded her plane for California, Lucas stood watching her, praying for her to travel safely. And as she disappeared behind the door, a hot tear rolled down his cheek. 8
It was a long plane ride back home for Isabel, and for the duration of the flight all she could do was dwell on her loss and wish that she didn’t have to go back to school. But her wish came true. The plane made headlines that day, for it crashed just outside of a nearby town. There were ninety people on the plane that day, and only six survived. Women, men and children lost their lives; Isabel’s included. 9
Lucas knew nothing of the plane crash until six hours later. It hit him hard. He turned to drinking for a while, as his only escape from the reality of it all. But after the shock past, he remembered something Isabel had told him. The words ran across his mind, “Take care of your Mother and finish school, then when you all grown up I’ll come and see you. I promise” and so that’s what he did. He took care of his Mother until she died and was there for her, when she fell ill a couple of years after Isabel’s death. 10
He graduated from high school and went on to be a successful lawyer. Not a day went by, without thoughts of Isabel on his mind. He never spoke of her to no-one and no-one dared ask. On the sixteenth of May 2020, Lucas passed away, at the age of 87. He had seen this life through, gotten married, had a baby girl named Isabel and watched her grow and have kids of her own. 11
And now, as he lay in his coffin, his spirit travelled up to heaven. When he got there, Isabel was waiting for him, just as she had promised. She looked as beautiful as the day he had met her. She took his hand in hers, kissed him gently and together they began their journey. Walking hand in hand through the golden gates of heaven. For you see, true love lasts forever, in life as well as death.12

Overall, a well-written story, but this epitomises most things I hate about the romance genre - the lovers painted as unrealistic ideals wrenched apart by 'fate' only to meet again in heaven, where everything is perfect. Sorry - but I found this to be far too cliched.
One nitpick: para [1] 'fishes' should be 'fish' - the word is the same for both singular and plural.
Thank you for your entry in ALMOST ANYTHING GOES... if you're 16 and younger and best of luck in your writing endeavours. -
wow
that was short, kinda sad, not so snooshy, and lacking detail, but it was ok... -

Very touching. I cried, no joke. The description is very, very sweet. Well done and I'm happy for Lucas finding Isabel in the end. It put a smile on my face. Thanks for entering and I wish you the best of luck in the contest.

i loved i
read my storie pleasean let me know what you think

Wow!

As usual, however, I'm the kind who points out minor discrepancies(if that's the right spelling) in the story, even though no one asked me to.
I mean, how can you make him marry and have a daughter, and then go back to Isabel again? I mean wouldn't his wife be a wee bit disappointed?
But the ending was superb. Good play on the "I'll be back" thing! I thought she was going to come back as a ghost or something but you gave another twist to the end.
However, hate to tell you this, but I find airplane/car crashes cliched ways to die.

Awwww this was so sad but it ended beautifully. The way you ended it made me all warm inside. I love how they met again and she kept her promise to him in death. Beautiful, just beautiful. You are a wonderful writer
Good luck in the contest. I hope you win something.

its sortov like Titanic.. its beautiful

It too sad! . I like it a lot though. It felt really rushed to me though, especially the beginning. I think you should have done it in parts so you could have gone into more detail about how they met and what their relationship was like. Other than that it's good and it made me cry.

Awwwww. It's cute. I like it
-
Aw, such a sweet story. I loved it, very romance with out being over welming. You speak such truth about true love.

-
This is a really good story, I love the way you really managed to put their emotion into words really well.
Something that struck me as funny that has nothing to do with your story is that we have a tv star in Australia here called Isabel Lucas.
But I loved it, well done. 4/5
