Gemini1
By Jennifer Mae Christman2
I had just moved to the small town of West-chester, New York. It was a change from Canada, but my parents had just died and I had to move in with my Aunt Sue, and Uncle Bing. Since my cousins Alex, and Yvonne, had gone away to college, I got the chance to move into either of their bedrooms. I chose Alex’s room for two reasons, one, it was down in the basement so I could have alot of privacy, and two, because it was dark. I have something called, physical urticaria, which means that I am allergic to the sun. Whenever I skin was exposed to the sun, I get hives which itch and didn’t stop itching. Every time I go out into the sun, even if it is in the middle of winter, I get what looks like a sunburn. That was one of the reasons I liked living in Prince Rupert, Canada, they had very few days of sunlight. New York, however, had the most days of sun that I had been to in the United States, and I hated it. All of this sunlight was making my eyes hurt.3
The day I arrived in New York, I unpacked everything, and since I didn’t have that much stuff, only a few suitcases and two boxes, it did not take I long. After I unpacked, I went in with my Aunt and Uncle to sign up for school. I was in luck, the school year had just begun so I wouldn’t feel so out of place. My classes were relatively easy, and consisted mostly of classes I already had in my old school. I received I schedule, locker number and combination, and a number for lunch. I had not talked at all since I arrived. Tommorow would be a nightmare, I thought.4
As I was walking to school the next morning, I felt the wind blow unexpectedly. I looked behind me and saw an emo boy with thick black eyeliner, he was walking with some friends, although he did not seem to be talking to them much, just nodding his head in response to their questions and staring at the ground. It seemed that the wind wasn’t blowing on them, but around them. Almost like one of them was controlling it. The wind was blowing fast, and hard, but it didn’t seem to move anything on them. It didn’t move their hair or clothes, even though it was whipping my hair around. It was also making my snakebites cold, and since I had just gotten the left one pierced the wind made them hurt a little bit, but hey, I kind of like pain. 5
He glanced up at me, and our eyes met for one split second. I turned my head back around and noticed that I had arrived at the high school. I walked in and went directly to the main office, where I was told to go to as soon as I had arrived at school. The receptionist looked at me with caring, maternal eyes, “Can I help you, sweetheart?” she asked. I handed her my slip and schedule, she knew exactly what I was there for, “You need someone to show you around?” she added in a sweet nurturing voice. I nodded my head, not wanting her to laugh at me about my accent, plus I hadn’t talked in a week, so I didn’t trust my voice to be too crackly, especially with it being my first day here. She picked up the loudspeaker, and spoke into it, “Oleander Abercrombie, please come to the front office please, Oleander Abercrombie to the front office.” we waited for about five minutes before he walked through the doors of the main office. The boy I had just seen not even thirty minutes before walking on the street, walked through the doors and I got a lump in my throat. “please show Jayde around, and pleas try not to get into any fights today, that would be greatly appreciated. I will have your homework for you at the end of the day. Thank you, you can leave now.” she finished telling him as the phone rang.6
We left the office and he turned to me and asked me “So you’re new here?” he waited patiently for my answer, and when he did not receive an answer, he just gave me this wierd look, “ok then. Do you talk at all?” he asked me. I nodded and he said, “Well then, at least you respond to questions. Lets see your schedule.” he said, and I handed him my schedule. He looked shocked, “Wow, we have the same classes.” he told me, “I guess there’s no use in barb getting my homework. Can you stay here for a minute while I run into the office really quick?” he asked me and I nodded. He ran into the office and a few seconds later came back out. “Ok all set. Shall we?” I nodded again.7
We got to our first class and I went in behind Oleander, our first class, trig. was generally easy, and even though it was eight o’clock in the morning, I got through the class with great ease. After trig. we had chorus, even though I wasn’t talking throughout the class, the teacher told me I had to sing. Oleander explained to her that I didn’t talk and so she was fine with that, just as long as I didn’t talk to anyone. Our next class after that, was art. I was generally good at art and we were working with clay, something I had worked with for my whole school occupation, so I knew what I was doing, even though most of the other kids in the class didn’t understand anything about it. The class after that was english, in which we were reading Hamlet, written by Shakespeare. I had read that book ten times already just for fun, so I had a pretty good grasp of it. The bell schedule took a little getting used to, because right after that we had lunch. At lunch, I sat with Oleander and his friends. Most of them were very nice to me although I could sense a tension growing between the boy, Quentin and Oleander, and I could tell that they all thought that I was weird because I didn’t talk. The rest were nice even though no one really talked, they all just ate their lunch and ignored everyone. I excused myself and went to use the restroom, once there I applied more of my eyeliner, and tried out my voice. Finding out that my voice now sounded weird and scratchy, I decided to just go ahead and use it at the end of the day or unless someone asked me a question. I got back to the table that we were sitting at and found that someone had taken my tray and were now discussing something that I would never have talked about with my friends back home. “A pirate would totally kick a ninjas butt.” Quentin was telling one of the other boy’s, Matt, I think his name was.8
“No a ninja would totally win.” Matt was saying.9
My voice came as a surprise to all of us, including me, “I think that the circumstance of where they, and what weapons they have makes either one of them the winner.” they all stared at me with their mouths open, “What? Did I say something wrong?” I asked now worried.10
Kelly, the only other girl, besides me, explained “No Jayde, they are just surprised that a girl, other than me talked to them.” She joked, punching Oleander’s arm.11
“Hey, what was that for?” I heard him complain as I swiftly hid behind the closest corner that I could find. I was going to walk around and look for my next class and realized that Oleander still had my schedule and map. I cursed in my mind, and walked to the library to see if I could find a good book to read but the library here was so small I couldn’t find anything good to read. I walked back to the cafeteria and sat down next to Kelly.12
“Where did you go? You missed the fun, you missed me beating up Oleander.” she giggled, I had a slight speculation that she had a crush on him.13
“Library.” I said shortly not wanting them to get another glimpse of my deep accent. I sounded like a sick French person. They just looked at me with weird looks on their faces.14
Just then the bell rang and we all stood up. Kelly explained that we all had the next four classes together. “It will be interesting in gym, since there is now two girls in the class, and also in creative writing, since there is now only just five of us.” I looked at her with a blank look on my face.15
“Do you think the gym teacher will make me change out since I just started?” I asked her making sure no one else heard, just in case my accent creeped out. 16
“I don’t know you will have to ask him, not me.” she laughed, realizing why I was looking around. 17
I did not have to dress out that day but the teacher Mr. Tibbs, told me to be ready to play volley-ball the next day. I was on the team back home, even though no one really liked me and thought I was bad, I was actually kind of good at the game. After gym, we had creative writing, in which we had to write a horror story, I decided to write about my parents getting killed, but tone it down a little bit, and put a different name and all in it. It was sure to get me an “A” even though I was good at writing any story. Creative writing went relatively quickly, and I had American History next. We were studying a subject that I had already studied last year, the civil war. The last period of my day consisted of study hall, in which I had nothing to work on except for my creative writing, that went quickly. I typed it printed it out and gave it to my teacher, I timed my return perfectly, because just as the bell rang, I got back to the classroom. Matt, Quentin, Oleander, and Kelly had grabbed my books. 18
I muttered “Thanks.” and we went on our merry way.19
On the walk home, I had found out that we all lived next door to each other. Something strange happened on the walk home, I found out that Kelly is a cancer, born on June 21, Matt was born on January 26, making him aquarius, Quentin was born on January 1, making him a capricorn, and Oleander was born on May 30, same as me, making both of us gemini. As we started rounding a corner Kelly called Oleander a name. You could see the hurt in his eyes, and although I had just met him this morning, I got a little bit mad and the wind started blowing rapidly. The wind was not touching Oleander and I, but it was whipping Kelly’s hair and clothes around. I looked at Oleander’s face, and noticed that he was kind of freaked out. I guessed that I was blowing the wind and Oleander nodded at the look on my face.20
He did not say anything to the others but whispered in my ear, “I’ll explain it to you later. Can you meet me out here later tonight about five?” he asked, and I nodded. As I departed from them, I turned back and waved. 21
Later after dinner, I decided to take a walk before meeting Oleander. He found me and told me all about what being a gemini was about. “We can control the air and weather around us, especially when we are mad about something. That’s why the air started blowing around us after school.” he paused, “What made you so mad anyway?” he asked. 22
I started chewing on my snakebites and told him about me getting upset about what Kelly called him. He listened and nodded as I told him the answer to his question earlier today. “I see, is that why you weren’t talking earlier today?” I nodded, not looking him in the eyes. He put his hand gently under my chin and pulled my cheek up to meet his lips, “You don’t have to be shy around me, Jayde, I will never make fun of you as long as I live.”
