Famous Last Words

They said that the world would end on December the 12th, 2012.1

I didn't believe them, of course.2

It was such an arbitrary date- it didn't even have any music to it, you know- none of the grandeur of an 08/08/08, an 01/01/01, what have you.3

It didn't even scan well in poetry- "and to an end the world shall come, in tumty-tumty-tumty-tum", that sort of thing.4

So no, I didn't believe them when they said that the world would end on the 12th of December, 2012.5

And when the day dawned bright and early, and when I went to to work the same as always, and when I came home the same as always, and the sky didn't fall and the Old Gods didn't rise and nothing at all of any interest didn't happen, I found myself smiling to myself at their stupidity.6

I wish I hadn't.7

Because now it's a second before midnight on the 13th of December, 2012- a Friday the 13th, why didn't I see that, why didn't I see it coming?- and the streets are full of hideous, ravening monsters, and I can hear the screams in the streets below, and I can hear them rampaging through my building, and I've got my shotgun under my chin, and I wish I'd listened...
