For some reason, it felt like it should be set in the early 1930's, during the Dust Bowl and the Depression. Probably the abject sadness. I'd guess it "sounds boring" because there's a lack of detail; fleshing it out would bring more connection with the characters.

The idea could have some sort of theme. If it's just a sad story, it won't go far. Good luck on the idea, a little revising and it could soon be a story.
