Today, April 17, is the Day Of Silence. This is a national youth movement that started at the University of Virginia in 1996. On this day students of all sexualities will remain silent speaking only if it is absolutly impossible not to through out their school day. Communicating through written and typed messages these teenagers and pre-teens hope to represent through their deliberate silence, the silence that Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender students along with there allies feel is forced upon them. Most Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual or Transgender (GLBT) students feel that they lose their voice and their ability to stand up for themselves and what they are out of fear for their own safety.23

The day of silence has been observed for the last 13 years. Each person, each school, and each facility that observes this protest has there own reasons and each is very personal and close to the heart of those who take part in this movement. For these people, many of whom speak out against the miss treatment of GLBT people silence really does speak louder than words.67

thank you so much for posting this on here!!! this is exactly what people simply dont seem to understand. love is love is love.
i took part in the day of silence, but was one of the only two people who actually did it in my high school (out of about 1500). it was rediculous how much crap me and the other person got for doing it. Like we were doing something wrong by staying silent. -

I was surprised I go to a school of about 800 and had many ppl taking part.. of course we have a lot of gay, bi, les, closet case ppl in our school.......but we still caught a lot of hell for it.. even my boy friend at the time who's so straight he can't turn a corner caught hell for it...and all I heard the whole day was are you sure he's not gay and I wanted to slap them cause no one seemed to understand that it was for GLBT and their allies... I wasted SOOO much paper that day it wasn't even funny but it was so worth it... a picture's worth a thousand words but silence is worth a million and I've got a billion reasons to do it all again... anyway thank you for your comment sorry about my rant but you know...I get going and don't know when to stop... I'm just glad to know that ppl get it..I showed it to my mom I don't think she read it because her response was 'I don't think kids know what the want it's a stage they'll grow out of when the become adults" of course she said the same thing about me when she found out I was bi but I think she's warming up to it...she's not happy by any means but she's ok with it

wow. Even with that many people doing it? I'd have thought it'd have better with more! Yeah that's what my parents are saying too. Minus the warming up to it thing.*grr*
even the lgbt people at my school didnt do it. why, i have no idea. But only me and my straight friend did it. She's been one of the few people to support me since i've come out as bi. And so when she heard about the dos, she immediately said she'd do it. But we definately heard a lot about doing it. it's crazy.

Thank you for the comment and thank you because finally some one gets it...I'm not saying are saying others are right wrong or that I'm right or that I'm wrong I'm saying simply what I believe if you wanna that's fine if you don't it's your business but don't tell me that I'm wrong cause what I believe is mine... and most people don't get that... Thank you for the comprehension

*Claps hands* thank you. At least someone on here cares about the death of that little boy and what we do to honor him. Did you know today would have been his 24th birthday??

I thought it would have been his 12th...maybe your right...IDK I'd have to look at the date on the article but yes I did know that his birthday was on the 17th... and I'm glad to know that some one read it and liked it my mom gave me this...I really don't think he could have known what he was at that age...ugh...same thing she told me when she found out I was bi but that's not the point at all...anyway..thanks for the feedback...
