Rain

Chapter Five:1

1900 Massachusetts2

“Come along children,” I said as I rushed the children back in the classroom.3

“Mrs. Langdon!! Mrs. Langdon!! Look what I made for you!” I heard Elena say. I turned around and looked down. Elena handed me a piece of paper that had two people in it. One was of me, and the only way I knew it was because of the little arrow pointing saying Mrs. Lungdan. I giggled. And the other one was little Elena.4

“Thank you sweetheart,” I told her as I gave her a big hug. She squirmed around and giggled.5

“Your welcome!” she said with a grin that showed off her toothless mouth.6

I ushered her to her table and then turned around to the board. I wrote down the word fantasy.7

“Okay, children. Does anyone know what the word fantasy mean?” I asked. The class was quiet. A couple of seconds later, Josie had slowly raised her hand. I smiled and nodded my head. “Josie,”8

“I…think it means…something not real, made up…” she whispered. I nodded my head enthusiastically.9

“Yes, you’re right! Can anyone give me an example of fantasy?” I asked. Some of my fourth graders hands went up.10

“Elena,” I picked.11

“John’s imaginary friend Bob?” she asked teasingly.12

“He’s not imaginary!” John shot back with a pout.13

“Yes he is!” Elena replied.14

“Okay. Anything else?” I asked I straightened out my pink blouse. I chose my student of the month, Joseph.15

“Um, witches?” He said unsure.16

“Yes, very good!” I said and wrote that down on the board.17

“Oooh how about a unicorn?!” I heard someone shout out. I wrote that down as well.18

“Anything else?”19

“Vampires!!” Mary, shouted.20

“Vampires? But they’re real!” someone else shouted back.21

“No they’re not!”22

“Yes they are! MY dog was killed by a vampire!!”23

“Oh please! Your dog ran away from you!”24

“Class!! Quiet down!!” I said putting my finger to my lips.25

“They are real!”26

“No they’re not!!”27

“Fine, let’s ask Mrs. Langdon. Are they real or not?!” One of my students asked.28

“Uh…” I stopped.29

DING. DING.30

“Class is dismissed,” I said and began to pack my stuff. I didn’t hear the usual running to the door. I looked up and saw my class look back at me.31

“Well Mrs. Langdon? Are they real or not?” they asked in unison.32

I stared at them unbelievably. Well, should I lie? It’s sooo ironic. If I lie to them that there are no vampires, and I am one, that’s just…. But they are little kids, and I don’t want to ruin their imaginations…33

“Er, if you believe then maybe there are. You know as I always say, if you believe you can achieve!!” With a big smile but the class stared back.34

I sighed. “Class, if you don’t leave now, this will affect your grades,” and in a second the classroom was empty.35

I smiled a small smile.36

“Bye Mrs. Lungdan!!” Elena said with a wave.37

“Bye bye,” I said and headed to the office. I signed out and told my co-workers bye.38

I began to walk home where probably Alister was waiting for me. Alister and I had settled in a little town called Amherst. It’s been 15 years since we came from Portugal and 34 years since my new life as a half vampire. I still am a half vampire because Alister didn’t feel there was any need for me to be a full. It was easier like this because I could still be human and not arise any suspicions.39

Alister though, would make people curious. He didn’t do any town work or join the other men for any activities. He would sometimes go away for a long journey to hunt for food and come back home really late. He didn’t want me to be Mrs. Langdon, for we weren’t even close to that. We were just hunting buddies. Well, to him. TO me though, he was a really close friend. (Even though sometimes I would wish to throw a fork at him but that wouldn’t harm him at all. It would just bounce off like a ball!!)40

I had become a teacher at the Willies’ Elementary School because I wanted to try it out. So far, I loved it. Maybe it was my passion? I’m not sure because when I was young I never dreamed of being a teacher. We weren’t even allowed.41

This new world or America now known as was different from Home. From England.42

I never got to go back and see if Mama and Papa were okay. I was afraid. I didn’t want them to be afraid of me. I didn’t want to risk of killing them. I didn’t have courage. Alister supported me, told me he would be there but I just couldn’t see them. Who knows where they are now? Are they still alive or had they crossed over? I never knew.43

And the Faulkner’s? I didn’t even want to think about it.44

Sometimes I would dream about them. About home and some of the things Michael and I did. It was like living in the moment because my memory was as clear as glass. I could remember everything. It was most likely because of the half vampire abilities.45

It was torture too. To remember those bitter sweet memories. To remember Michael and how he told me his secret. My god, Michael. He never got to fulfill his dream. Maybe it was good though, for him. Some dreams are meant to be broken.46

Drip.47

I looked up as the sky darkened. Rain began to pour. I stood there feeling it on my skin. People ran past me to their families. To warm up, tell them about their day. To ask how their day went. To enjoy a dinner. A warm cooked dinner by their family.48

Family. I wanted one too. Such a beautiful word. The street was empty except for me. The rain soaked up my clothes. I stared up at the sky.49

God, please. If you hear me, I promise to be good. Please, may I have just one thing? I would love it if you gave me someone who would love me. That’s all I ask. The feeling of love.50

I stood there who knows how long. Just thinking. Why couldn’t I let go of it all? Get over my past? I should be thinking about the future. My long long immortal future.51

“Holly?” I heard a whisper. I looked around. Was I hearing things? I turned around about to head home when I bumped into a hard chest. “Holly?”52

Alister grabbed me and hugged me. I just stood there, not having the energy to hug him back. Where did all my energy go?53

“Alister…” I began. My voice was so hoarse. “What are you doing here?” I asked.54

Alister mumbled something.55

“What?” I asked.56

“I…I heard an angel crying. I’m sooo sorry,” he whispered. He touched my cheeks.57

“I’m not crying,” I told him biting my lip. “It’s the rain,”58

“Oh my sweet angel,” He said and nuzzled my nose with his.59

“Alister…” I began. I brushed away his blonde gold hair away from his eyes. I could see his honey eyes. In them, I could see me.60

“Yes?” He asked.61

“You’re even more beautiful in the rain,” I whispered and snuggled up in his wet chest. I didn’t remember what he said next because I had dozed off then.

    Weird ending to the chapter.

hhhmmm... i don't think that chaptershould end up with her falling asleep standing with her head on his chest...1 why is she suddenly exhausted when she had been cheerful a few seconds before, 2 he would be stuck carrying her home, 3 they're standing in the middle of town, wouldn't it look odd for a man to be carrying his sleeping wife in the middle of a storm? I think it should end with them walking home holding hands or something...? idk, what'd you think?
