Where The Dove Flies (Chapter 1)

"Excuse me, miss but I can I see your papers please?" asked the Nazi officer. Maria handed over the forged papers her mother had given her before she left. She prayed silently that the officer wouldn't realize that she was fleeing. The officer spent a few minutes scanning her papers, then turning to her said, “And his?" meaning her baby brother, Andras. She fumbled the baby in her arms while she dug through her bag to find Andras' papers. The officer snatched them out of her hand impatiently. Maria had no idea if he had figured out their secret. Soon she was handed back Andras' papers and was boarding the train that would take her and her brother to freedom.1

Maria sat down in a vacant seat near the end of the train. She was so glad that they had gotten on the train. She knew that she was going to start a new life for herself and her brother. Her mother would find them, and they would be a family again. The soldiers that took her father would return him. The ones that caused all this pain and terror. She was finally leaving this insanity.2

She settled herself and Andras for the long train ride to London. Andras was already asleep and she planned to do the same. She slipped into a deep slumber and dreamed about the way it was before the war.3

Maria was standing in her yard, her mom and dad sitting on the doorstep watching her. Her mom, Anna, was six months pregnant with Maria’s soon to be brother. Her father, Luca, was reading the local newspaper. The family lived in a small, lavish neighbourhood in Krakow, Poland. Everyday a single white dove flew down the street, symbolizing peace. Maria had a wonderful play area in the backyard. Her father had built her a sandbox and put a tire swing in one of the trees. She enjoyed playing on it, yelling “Daddy come push me.” 4

Her brother, Andras, was born a few months later. Maria was fascinated by her new baby brother. She helped her mother fed, cloth, change and bathe him. She played peek-a-boo with him. They were such a happy family, in such a happy neighbourhood. But one day Luca came home with news of a war. Maria, being thirteen, didn’t quite understand what it was, but knew that it meant life was about to change. 5

On one tragic afternoon, two armed officers stormed into the house. They tore it apart, looking for documents from Luca’s business. Without any luck. The officers arrested Luca and drug him out of the house. “Remember my daring Maria, where the dove flies, there will always be peace!” Those words stuck in her head and never left. She heard them everyday.6

Good job on the Nazi takeover of Poland. Have you ever read a book called "The Cage" by Ruth Minsky Sender? It is her actual memoir of Holocaust survival as a young girl age 13 through 16, and it is very powerful - just thought you might be interested. She was prisoner #55082 at Auschwitz.
