The Future of Britannia, Pt. 1

Legend has it that aeons ago, a great hero came from another to liberate our homeworld and had since become its champion. And seven visits he did make, by virtue of the late monarch Lord British. This champion posessed a great ability, one which allowed him to walk amongst the stars and visit other worlds. And legend also has it that during this time, this was a world of magic and the 8 Virtues. But by the time he made his last visit to our world, a powerful being, one who had destroyed many worlds before, had ravaged it and cast the hero to an unknown world, where he bested elemental spirits known as Titans. Through this process, he became a Titan himself: the Titan of Ether. Yet, by the time he had returned, the damage had become irreversable, and he returned to his own world to prevent the same cataclysm.1

Of course, this is complete fantasy. We know that magic has never existed, and that our archaic ancestors worshipped false gods and principles. The world of Britannia, since we have known it, has been a barren wasteland, with entire continents having gone adrift into the confines of space. Still, the legend is what we tell our children today, because on this desolate settlement, there is little hope.2

What is true is that a being from another planet did cast our homeworld into ruins. Perhaps using some form of mind probing, he masqueraded as a God and deceived our ancestors into trusting him unconditionally. A few, namely the sage Batlin, knew of his real motives, but chose to foolishly join him in his plight against Britannia. They, too, were decieved, as they were just pawns in his vision of conquest.3

The legend further goes to say that this being, the Guardian if you will, had had been of massive proportions and too, controlled the ficticious substance Ether. It is my belief that the Guardian used technology that was foreign to us, doing most of his dirty work through his converts and the volatile substance blackrock, which as we all know, explodes when bombarded by certain forces.4

Certainly, by the time both the Guardian and our supposed champion left our homeworld, there was no trace of magic left. There are a few who claim to still practition it, but pay them no heed; they are, for the most part, clinically unstable. Besides, where was the magic when we were forced to leave Britannia, which is completely desolate now?5

Still, the gargoyles speak of our champion. They, like the "mages", are obsessed with the past and tradition. The speak of a false prophet who had come to their underworld to undo the damage he had created by liberating a mythical text known as the Ultimate Codex of Wisdom, and supposedly with their help, had sent it to the void.6

But such is nonsense.7

Author notes

I dont' usually do fanfiction, but for anybody who's played the ultima games, here's a short story based on that. I'm ignoring Ultima 9 because I haven't gotten too far with it and I don't really know the plot behind it. Besides, many of its players think it's the word game in the canon.

Note that all of the characters mentioned here are still the property of Origin Systems (and unfortunately, by extension, EA games).
