Elizabeth and grace were the best of friends ever since they met in kinder, even 20 years on and they are still as close as ever. Today they both attend the local collage together. They both decided to go out jogging together in early dawn, along the trail that curves along The Jensen Lake. Neither of them was too happy about the idea of getting up early but they did not want to disappoint each other. Although it was the middle of winter both girls decided, it was now or never. The sky was in twilight, as the young women were jogging along. Rugged up in heavy winter clothes.1
‘So how’s was the date last night Liz?’ Grace asked between breaths2
‘Yeah it was o.k. No second date planned’ Elizabeth replied jogging along side grace. The previous night Grace had set Elizabeth up on a blind date with a guy she gets her coffee off each morning when they returned from their jog3
‘come on he is a nice guy’ she continued 4
‘Maybe for you but we just did not click now can we drop the subject?’ Elizabeth nudged Grace and sped up and over took her friend5
‘Hey!’ Grace ran faster catching up to Elizabeth. They continued jogging but they both wanted some water, they spotted the fountain and went off the track and over to get water.6
The lake was beautifully frozen over; as the just rising sun glistened off the reflection, the ground was covered in beautiful white snow with the walk way and roads carefully shovelled. The bare tree’s caught Grace’s attention with their beauty; she stood and watched the tree’s sway with the wind that was starting to pick up. The bitter wind swept over their faces as a chill went through the both of them. Elizabeth snuggled back into her coat and wiped her mouth as the water felt like it would turn into icicles while Grace had a drink and tightened her coat around her. 7
Elizabeth watched Grace have a drink then took off running again 8
‘See you loser ‘she yelled back, startling Grace 9
‘Hey!’ Grace started after her when something caught the side of her eye, Grace looked over across the frozen water and saw and young girl, about the age of 10 walking across the lake. She looked around trying to spot anyone who might be watching for her. There was no one. Elizabeth was still running when she looked behind and saw her best friend looking at the lake, curious, her eyes gazed over the lake and saw the young girl Grace was looking at. And headed back over to Grace to see what is wrong with her.10
‘Hey Grace what is wrong?’ Elizabeth asked while standing beside her11
‘That girl’12
‘Yeah what’s wrong with her?’13
‘Liz there’s no one watching her’ she raised her voice in concern. While heading out onto the unpredictable ice,14
‘Hey honey why don’t you come off the ice? Please and we can take you home!’ she yelled to the young girl while extending her arm towards her,15
‘please be careful’ Elizabeth yelled while cautiously following,16
The young girl looked up at grace as she got closer and smiled.17
Back on the trail, a man in his early 30’s spotted the three young women on the ice and saw with in a few seconds the ice gave way. It cracked beneath them and the young girl went under, grace fell to her knees and grabbed for the girl in the freezing water as Elizabeth came closer, with the combined weight, the ice gave way more and the both of them went in. The man at on the trail watching in horror as he frantically dialled 911 and simply yelled 18
‘Jensen Lake three women have fell into the ice need help quick!’ he hung up and rushed as quickly as he could to reach them, he got closer and slowed down to a crawl hoping the ice would hold.19
‘Oh god please help me’ he whispered when he leant down and started searching for the girls. Frantic. The man dove in the icy water trying to find them. He could not. The man started running out of breath, he was freezing cold and tried to find the hole again. The man started to panic desperately searching he still could not find it. The young mans heart started to slow down before he felt a hand grab and pull him out of the water.20
The next day the young man awoke; warm, in the hospital with his girlfriend asleep in the chair beside his bed.21
‘Jenny?’ he asked weakly 22
‘Jenny?’ jenny awoke startled; she looked over and was filled with joy, as her boyfriend was awake23
‘Oh my god Jake how do you feel?’ 24
‘I’m ok what happened?’ Jake sat up in his bed and reached for the glass of water sitting in front of him 25
‘You fell through ice and almost drowned’ jenny held onto Jake’s hand and squeezed it lightly26
‘You don’t remember?’ she continued, as the memories returned to Jake27
‘No there were two women and a little girl, how are they? Did someone get them out?’ jenny stroked his forehead and kissed him lightly on his lips 28
‘Jake… there were no women…or little girl’29
‘What? Yes there was that’s why I went onto the ice because they fell in I needed to help them’ jenny shook her head and looked deeply into his eyes30
‘Jake… the girls you saw on the ice are the ghosts of Jensen lake, like 10 years ago these two women Elizabeth and Grace saw a little girl named Michele fall into the ice they went to help but fell in too all three died. A lot of people still see them almost every winter’ Jake sat, shock played over his face as he took the information in. He gave a slight nod and looked up at jenny 31
‘I wish we never came to north Carolina, how did you know that story anyway?’32
Jenny face fell and Jake could see the sorrow 33
‘Because Jake… Michele was my little sister’.34
