Bad Luck

I have such bad luck. It’s not even funny. There are so many guys in the world, but I have to fall for the one who’s not available. And I don’t mean like he has a girlfriend. As far I know he didn’t have a one for more than 2 years now. But even though he’s not interested in me at all, I’m chained to him.1

His name is Helios, he’s seventeen and he’s extremely good-looking! He is an emerald in a book store. Every girl is head over heels in love with him. He is on the basketball team and he’s also very smart. The only flaw in him is that he wants nothing to do with love. There were tons of girls who confessed to him and every time he would refuse them. Helios is really anti-social. He won’t talk to anyone who he considers a stranger which is almost everyone.2

*Sigh* There’s really nothing I can do. I know very little about him and I can’t talk to him because he’ll just think I’m a weirdo. Even if my reputation in school is good, it doesn’t matter to him. Helios is really a cold iceberg.3

Ouch! That hurt. I think I bumped into someone.4

“Um, sorry I wasn’t looking where I was going. Are you ok?” I looked up. It was… Helios. Of all the people in the world, well actually in school since it’s a school day, I just had to run into him.5

“I’m fine. You should be more careful next time.” And he walked away. He only said two sentences to me, so why do I feel like melting? This is the longest we’ve ever talked! Maybe I don’t have such bad luck.6

“I talked to Helios! I really talked to him. And he said, ‘You should be careful with such a fragile body.’ He is so cool.” Right now I’m talking to my best friend Lily. I tell her everything. And she knows that I have a crush on Helios. Lily is really nice and very beautiful. When she came to my school 2 years ago, I thought she was too uptight, but now I know it’s not true.7

“Selene, are you sure that’s what he said? You’re not imagining things again right?” She just has to get things right. 8

“Oh common, can’t you let a girl in love dream a bit?”9

“Not when it’s not true. I don’t think people should fill their heads with bizarre thoughts.”10

“Jeez, you’re so… can’t you let your best friend go to heaven? I feel like flying. This the first time he said something besides ‘Excuse me’.” 11

“Whatever. I just don’t want your wings to be cut off like usually.”12

“And who’s doing that?” I said sarcastically. I know Lily doesn’t mean any harm, but she does have a point.13

Ring, ring. “That’s the bell. We have art now.” I said and off we went to our last class of the day. 14

“I’m home.” I live with my mom in a 3 bedroom apartment. My parents got divorced when I was little, so I don’t see my dad a lot. He’s ok as a person, not so much as a father.15

“Hi, Selene. How was school?” My mom is in her mid forties but she looks really young. So young, people mistake her for my older sister. It’s an advantage sometimes, but sometimes it’s a pain.16

“It was fine. We drew self-portraits in art.”17

“Oh that’s good. We have a guest.” 18

“A guest?” We usually don’t have guests. My mom’s friends come from time to time, but not that often. My friends are so busy with school that they don’t have time. I wonder who it could be.19

“Hi. My name is Helios. Nice to meet you.” Oh my God. I can’t believe this. Why is Helios, the guy I love, the most popular boy in my grade, no make that school, is in my house!?20

“Selene, don’t you and Helios go to the same school?” My mom interrupted my train of thought.21

“Ah, yeah. We’re in the same grade. Mom, why is he here?”22

“You see, Helios’s mom and I are best friends,” and she smiles. SMILES. Can you believe her? She says, “We haven’t seen each other for about three years…” you call that best friends? She continued, “His parents are on a vacation and he didn’t have anywhere to stay so I thought about it and told them that he can stay with us. We have an extra bedroom that no one uses so he could sleep there. Isn’t this great? Now we have a man in the house.” She smiles again! You’ve got to be kidding me. 23

This is the worst luck ever! But now I get to see him every morning and night… NO you can’t think that. 24

“I’m sorry to cause you all this trouble,” he smiled! His smile is like sunshine on a gloomy day.25

“Uh, you’re no trouble at all. My mom and I live alone so it’s good to have company. You’re welcome here anytime.”26

“Thank you.”27

“Ok, Helios you should go to your room. I’m sure you have a lot of stuff to unpack. We won’t bother you and dinner will be ready in 2 hours. Selene, why don’t you help me cook?” What could it be? You see, when mom asks me to do something with her that means she wants to discuss something. And it’s especially serious when she sends someone to do something else so they won’t hear the conversation.28

“You like him, right?” What!? 29

“Mom, what are you talking about?”30

“Don’t try to hide. I can tell.”31

“Why would I like him? He’s just a friend.” Yeah right.32

“Selene, listen to me.” Mom is really scaring me. She continues, “If you like him, go for him!”33

“Huh?”34

“I have no objections at all. If it were me I would fall for him, too. He’s smart, handsome and kind of mysterious, don’t you think? If you like him, don’t wait or someone else will take him. I always say to follow your heart.” And look where that got you. Of course I can’t say that to her face, but it’s pretty much true.35

“Mom, I think you got something wrong. I don’t like him. And even if I did, I can’t just go for him. He’s not that into people. But I’m not saying he’s mean or anything, I’m sure he’s really nice inside, but he just doesn’t let people in. So it’s kind of hard to get close to him.”36

“I guess this is your opportunity then. But don’t think too much about him.” Does she think I won’t do well in my studies, just because of a guy? Though, it could be true.37

This is bad. This is really bad. I can’t sleep at all. I keep thinking about Helios and how he’s right next door. I’ll just get some water. Maybe that will cool my head.38

“You can’t sleep either?” Helios!?39

“Uh, yeah. I was going to get a cup of water.” What is he doing here at this hour? Should I be saying that? I’m also awake. But he looks really hot right now. What am I thinking? But he really does; with his wild hair and wrinkled shirt and his emerald eyes looking straight into mine… Wha, he’s actually looking into my eyes.40

Pfft Ha ha ha. Is he… laughing? 41

“You’re really funny.”42

“Why are you laughing?”43

“‘And his emerald eyes looking straight into mine… Wha, he’s actually looking into my eyes.’ Never thought you’d think that.” Huh? I didn’t say that out loud, did I? How does he know what I was thinking? Maybe I said it out loud. But I’m pretty sure I didn’t. What’s going on?44

“Sorry, did I scare you?” What does he mean? Why is he looking at me with such charming eyes? And why am I blushing? “You see, I have this special ability to hear other people’s thoughts.” 45

“Ha, that’s funny. I never knew you had this kind of sense of humor.”46

“I’m not joking. You can think anything and I’ll know what it is. Try to think something.” He’s kidding right? Am I supposed to go along with this? Ok fine. I don’t think he knows that my birthday is on December 1st.47

“My birthday is on January 28th.”48

“I don’t think that’s true.”49

“How would you know?”50

“‘I don’t think he knows that my birthday is on December 1st.’ That’s why.”51

“You’re kidding. But if you can hear other people’s thoughts that means you know what I’ve been thinking all along?”52

“Yes. I heard all of your thought as long as you’re near me. I can also concentrate on one person who far away and hear that person. This power, I don’t know how I got it, but I can’t really control it.”53

That means he heard everything I thought! I feel really dizzy. 54

“I also heard you talking about me. I kind of overheard your conversation with your mom. I’m very curious to certain thing so I couldn’t help it. And it turns out that you…” He’s getting too close! Is this intentional? He looks like he’s wolf and it’s really scary. I don’t want to be eaten!55

“Um, I have to go to sleep.” Even though I won’t be able to fall asleep now that he’s been this close to me. Ba-thump, ba-thump. My heart is beating like crazy. He keeps getting closer.56

*Chuckle* “Don’t worry. I won’t do anything to you. But you’re really interesting. Good night.” And with that he just goes to his room.57

Helios is a wolf in sheep’s skin. His true personality is completely different from what everyone thinks. He’s kind of a jerk and likes to tease people. So why is my heart beating so fast? I have really bad luck.58
