street rat

A small child, dressed in rags1

Scrounging in trash cans2

for food that people won't even give to their dogs3

because it is so bad, so old.4

During the summer she sleeps in the park5

curled up against a tree.6

During the winter she sleeps over subway vents7

and tries to keep from freezing to death.8

She has no one,9

in the minds of the city dwellers, she is no one.10

Just another street rat.11

A worthless street rat.12

But she use to Be someone.13

She use to have a home,14

a family,15

she use to belong in society.16

Now society wants nothing to do with her.17

People frown at her while she begs for food.18

Mothers pull their children away from her and hurry past.19

She is alone, she has no one, nothing.20

A worthless street rat.21
