Politics is the analytical science
of placing famous people
on a sophisticated scale
ranging from capitalist
on the right wing
to communist
on the wrong wing.1
Politics is the rhetorical technique
of speaking loudly
and acting in silence;
of dreaming about a shared equality
for everyone, under God, and unity
with eternal hope and freedom,
and sending anyone who dreams differently to Gulag.2
Politics is the creative art
of not being too liberal
with anything except exclamation marks.
“Death to fascists!”
“Free that little country from that movie with Brad Pitt!”
“Down with Trotskyism, and Islam, and everything else,
except whatever it is we have!”3
Ultimately, politics is the magnanimous sacrifice
of one’s own desires;
to walk, with no hope of reward,
down a path lined with ingratitude,
and temptation, and hate;
to act only in the best interest of the people,
with or without their compliance.
