How I Learned to Believe in Leprechauns

It's Saint Patrick's Day! I thought as I got out of bed, Time to check if anyone's not wearing green!1

I walked out of bed, hoping that my little sister, Ellen, forgot what day it was. I crept into her room, only to find she was awake. And in her underwear.2

"Stalker!" she screamed," Get outta my room or I'll tell mom!"3

I sighed. She was the biggest tattletale I knew.4

"Whatever." And I ran out.5

I didn't care if I got a million dollars. I was not touching her unless she was wearing a shirt.6

I quickly put on a tee shirt(green one of course) and some jeans and walked into the kitchen for breakfast.7

Ellen was down there, of course.8

"Happy Saint Patrick's Day, Jeremy!" said Ellen.9

To my dismay, she was wearing a pink top and GREEN sweats.10

Screw this, I thought and walked right up and pinched her.11

"Augh!" she wailed," I'm wearing green, moron!"12

To which I replied," Colorblind, remember? Kinda sad really."13

She cried,"Mom! Jeremy pinched me for no reason!"14

"Are you wearing green?" my mom asked from the laundry room?"15

"Yeah!"16

"Then, Jeremy, stop harassing your sister!"17

"Mom," I said," it's not harassing if the said thing is a moro-"18

"IT'S THE LUCK O' THE IRISH!!!"19

I turned around and saw my dad with a little plastic leprechaun hat, dancing about like a idiot.20

"Dad," I said seriously," I am SO glad you did not do that in public."21

"Shut up, Jeremy!"22

"You shut up Ellen!"23

You be lucky you don't have a sister like Ellen. 24

Total. Monster.25

"Mom!" Ellen screamed," Jeremy's being mean!"26

And I walked out the front door, in need of fresh air.27

I was jogging along, still thinking angry thoughts about Ellen, when I saw it.28

A little man wearing all green, with a four leaf clover stitched onto his shirt pocket.29

Leprechaun, I thought, but I knew it couldn't be.30

He grinned and pointed to behind me, as if warning me to check where he was pointing.31

I did, and when I looked back, he was gone.32

Creepy, I thought.33

I walked over to where I thought I saw him, and found a pair of green shoes.34

They were sneakers, pretty small, and had little white patches on it.35

I slipped them on, and, strangely, they grew to match my foot size exactly.36

Okay, that's weird.37

It felt cramped, as if a paper of some sort was crammed inside those shoes.38

I took them off and found a note.39

It said:40

To Whoever Finds This Note:41

Congratulations! You've got me lucky shoes! Put them on, and when you hear music with 'em on, you'll dance jut like an Irishman!42

You're Welcome,43

A Friendly Leprechaun 44

Yeah, right, I thought, and headed back home.45

---------------------------------------------------------46

I was at choir class, and talking with my best friend, Jared47

"And then, Jared, you'll never believe this, he disappeared! Right in front of me! And then, I saw these green sneakers and-"48

"Class!" said the music teacher, Mrs. Valenzuela," less talking, more singing! Let's go!"49

And we started to sing.50

"How do you like to go up in a swing, up in the air so blue? Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing ever a child can do!"51

All of the sudden, my feet were no longer in control and I got up and started dancing.52

Aw, crap, I thought, the shoes really do work!53

"Something you'd like to share with us, Jeremy?" asked Mrs.Valenzuela.54

"No," I lied," I just feel like dancing today."55

"Well, hows about you dance dance dance yourself back home? Go on, you are suspended from choir for one day for disrupting the class."56

I hung my head in shame as I walked out the door.57

My shoes felt sorta cramped, and I took them off to see if there was a rock lodged in there.58

There was another slip of paper.59

I read:60

Do start believing in leprechauns.61

I used Picture Prompt Six - Shoes

Ellen is a model of my little sister, Gretchen
Jeremy is a model of me.
Once, I actually did say I was colorblind just to get away with pinching people, thought they knew I could see my colors perfectly.
And my dad really did do that Luck O' The Irish thing.
The Song:
How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!
is called The Swing: By Robert Louis Stevenson
I like mint chocolate chip ice cream.
This means something to me because it reminds me of things that are mostly fiction, but some of these things actually happened(not the shoe thing, duh).

Way cool! You showed great imagination here. There were a few mess ups, so maybe you could read it over and deal with them. Good work.

Awww...what a cute story! Okay that's weird, but seriously, that was one funny leprechaun. Also I sympathized with Jeremy because I can understand how it is,his sister bugging him all the time.
It reminds me of a folktale called 'The Red Shoes' but it was longer and had a dark undertone.

I wouldn't put on shoes I found on the side of the street. I honestly wouldn't try to put them on, either. Perhaps you can say that you picked them up and then they grew?

I do believe you captured the essence of several families, and I like that the MC didn't want to pinch anyone that wasn't fully dressed.

I didn't wear green on St. Patrick's day, but not because I didn't want to. I didn't own anything green at that time. I do now, but I didn't then. Sorry. My excuse was, "I'm not Irish." I seriously doubt I have any in my heritage, since I can't even do the accent--I can do most of the other accents across the pond.

I see a few places that need work in this story. If you'd like to know where, please feel free to IM me about this particular story and I'll IM you back.

Well done and all the best in the contest.

    • You wouldn't?

Maybe it's just because Jeremy is a model of me and if I thought I saw a leprechaun, I would at least poke the shoes with a stick or something.
