Act 1: 2

INT. 3

FADE IN: 4

TO A CRUSTY APARTMENT THAT HAS AN ODD, WELCOMING 5

CHARM.  A GIRL WALKS OUT OF A DIRTY BATHROOM.  IT WAS 6

EARLY MORNING AND THE GIRL IS WEARING CLOTHES THAT 7

DON'T QUITE FIT RIGHT AND HER HAIR IS TOSSLED ALL OVER 8

HER HEAD AS IF SOMEONE WOULD FOLLOW HER OUT OF THE 9

BATHROOM BUT IT'S APPARENT ON HER FACE IT WAS FROM 10

NIGHTMARES.  11

CUT TO: 12

INT. 13

AN ALMOST GLOOMY KITCHEN; CLEAN, BUT DULL AND SCRUNGY. 14

[J. is sitting at the table clipping her toenails.] 15

ATTICUS 16

J, what the hell? 17

[knocks her feet off the table, then takes bread from 18

the toaster; the toast is black, but he eats it 19

anyways.] 20

You're gonna to be late again. 21

J. 22

Don't start with me this early, Atty. 23

ATTICUS 24

Starting with you?  Come on, J. I 25

just want one decent morning with you 26

that won't end with you threatening to 27

drink a whole gallon of milk. We both 28

know you'll just a little rash anyhow. 29

J. 30

[J. stares down Atticus, stands up and throws the chair 31

down.  She walks to the fridge and flings the door 32

open.]  33

A little rash?  Well, then get out the 34

crystal, we can clank glasses and make 35

toasts to a long and happy 36

relationship. 37

[J. opens the milk carton] 38

ATTICUS 39

[Goes to J. tries to take the milk, tries to get close 40

and kiss her and hug her.] 41

Josie, baby, don't be that way.  Come 42

on, stop, all I wanted was a normal 43

morning. 44

J. 45

Josie?!  You've gotta be fucking 46

kidding me. 47

[J. Drops the milk all over the the kitchen and all 48

over Atticus. Atticus is shocked at first, but a dull 49

shock like he's been there before.  He scrambles to dry 50

the milk.J. grabs her thrift-store looking coat and 51

slams the door.] 52

FADE TO: 53

INT. BACK TO PRESENT- J.'S APARTMENT. 54

J. 55

[J. Stumbles into a different kitchen, a messy one with 56

rotten food sitting in random places.Talking to 57

herself...] 58

Every morning I wake up to "doesn't- 59

matter-anymore", toaster jazz, and 60

bagels playing the blues. 61

[J. hits a CD play that starts blaring "My Coco" by 62

Stellastarr* pours a glass of Maid-Rite from a jug that 63

is sitting on the counter and looks rotten.  She grabs 64

a bagel between her teeth and goes to the fridge.  She 65

searches around for a second.] 66

None.  Of course, there was never 67

any.  I'm lactose intolerant.  Do you 68

mix Maid-Rite with milk, anyway?  69

Doesn't matter anymore. You're not 70

here to correct me.  I grabbed 71

yesterday's cold coffee and poured it 72

in.  Yum, chunky cherry hazel nut. I 73

stirred it with tonight's salad fork.  74

I never really liked salad anyway.  75

Nope, ever since you left I've been on 76

a strict all fatty and junk food 77

diet.  But I never liked explanations, 78

so nevermind. 79

[J. Runs through the kitchen sets her coffee and bagel 80

down, forgets about them.  She walks into a hallway and 81

grabs some dirty jeans and throws them on.] 82

No! Not nevermind. I'm not done with 83

my story, okay?  You know, you always 84

do that to me!  Every fucking time I 85

get something started, you try to 86

finish it for me.  I don't need your 87

help, especially not to tell a story.  88

They're only words.  It's not as if 89

I'll stumble on one 90

and...and...a..an..and 91

[stutters] 92

Okay.  It was only once. Only one damn 93

word.  I know it won't happen again.  94

Okay, where was I?  No, I don’t need 95

your help remembering.  My memory is 96

just fine. 97

[J. Trips over dirty laundry in the hallway.] 98

(A bell dings) 99

Ah!  The dryer; socks!  I look down at 100

my feet, and there they are.  Yep!  101

Two naked jaybirds’ feet.  Bird feet 102

are so un-beautiful, just like my 103

feet: skinny, bony, and mis-shapen.  104

Ah! There they are, the ugliest pair 105

of socks to match my ugly bird feet.  106

Purple and dirty. They're  short too. 107

They don't show above my shoe, it's 108

like this little reject party inside 109

my shoe that no one really wants to go 110

to.  I guess that’s what I like about 111

them.  That, and the fact that they 112

still smell faintly of the salty ocean 113

water  detergent> 114

[J. checks the clock.] 115

Fuck! 116

[She shoves the socks and shoes under her arms, grabbed 117

the bagel and trekked for the door.] 118

Ah!  Deodorant.  Oh, screw it.  Dirty 119

lesbians never wear deodorant.  Okay, 120

so maybe I’m not a lesbian, but from 121

now on, I’m sure as hell going to be 122

dirty.  I want to be able to savor the 123

dirt from yesterday’s gardening and 124

the sand from last year’s trip to the 125

beach.  Screw perfection.  Screw 126

smelling like a lilac just because 127

it’s your favorite flower. Lilac 128

sounds artificial anyway.  If I smell 129

like a flower, I want it to be because 130

I’m rolling around in rose petals. Not 131

because some scientist somewhere 132

conjured up some roll-on stickiness 133

that has a similar smell to a lilac.  134

Yeah, besides, they probably tested it 135

on poor little monkeys or kittens, 136

anyway. 137

[Glances at the calendar.] 138

Oh! Calendar. Saturday. Today is  139

special.  Of course everyday was 140

Saturday to me. Today was the day that 141

we went to the beach at 4 a.m.  Today 142

was the day you drowned while I 143

watched you struggle to get out of 144

your seat belt. 145

[J. walks down a flight of stairs, into a street.She 146

glances at her watch.] 147

4:11. When does it not says 4:11? 148

[J races down the boulevard, socks in one hand, half- 149

eaten bagel in the other, She runs past the big clock 150

on the bank.  It flashes 7:13; taunting her.] 151

Fuck, Already thirteen minutes late. 152

[J. Begins to dash down the street.] 153

Thirteen minutes, okay, but if I’m 154

more than thirty minutes late again 155

I’m going to get fired.  I’m the only 156

waitress who works on my shift, and 157

it’s always busy.  Everyone wants 158

coffee and eggs and bacon at this time 159

of day. 160

[J. burst through the doors, into the coffee shop, 161

walks though another door, is taken to another room.] 162

CUT TO: 163

EXT. 164

NIGHT TIME OUTSIDE ATTICUS' HOUSE. 165

INT. 166

J. 167

[J. Unlocks the door, walks through the kitchen, into 168

the doorway between the living room and kitchen.  She 169

spots Atticus, who is sitting on the couch, drinking 170

and playing The Good Life. (Camera shows double room 171

view, half of each, with a wall between the two.)  J. 172

sighs and leans against the wall, Atticus drinks more 173

and screeches song.  J. walks away, camera follows 174

her.  She walks out the front door again, and into 175

cafe.] 176

INT. 177

J'S BOSS 178

No socks again, eh? 179

[J. Holds up socks.Boss rolls eyes as he gives off his 180

next line.] 181

You're late. 182

J. 183

I know, I know.  [In mocking voice] It 184

won't happen again. 185

J'S BOSS 186

[Sighs, and hands J. a tray of orders.) 187

(The tray is huge and filled with plates of eggs, 188

bacon, sausage, and mugs of coffee and orange juice.) 189

DREAM-ISH: 190

(Camera changes to deluted colors and everything gets 191

blurry.  People setting around all turn strange or 192

scary) 193

[J. Begins scurrying through the cafe holding a tray of 194

her mistakes, or something to represent them. Random 195

people at the tables are going insane, demanding that 196

she come to their table first. At least twenty people 197

are yelling about how long they've waited, and how they 198

were the first people here.  Still hoping, she rushes 199

to answer their calls of "Hey, miss!", "Over here!", 200

"Waitress!", and various other beckoning yells coming 201

from across the room.  J. hurries around crazy like, 202

trying to get to all the tables, spilling her own 203

problems, collecting dirty dish problems, falling 204

behind.  She finishes in a panic, delivering all the 205

orders except one.The face of this character is blurred 206

but the character is wearing a familiar junky jacket.] 207

BACK TO NORMAL: 208

[J. Drops tray of eggs, bacon, sausage, and mugs of 209

coffee and orange juice.] 210

(Camera goes to spilled milk; milk runs; camera 211

follows, ends at new place - Atticus' shoes.  Camera 212

drifts up Atticus to his face, which is confused.) 213

ATTICUS 214

[shouting as if searching] 215

J.... J!  J, hurry, come here! 216

[Atticus walks down the hall, camera loses him, goes to 217

J. sitting in a murky bathtub with all her clothes on.] 218

J. 219

[Talking to herself.] 220

I don't like my water shallow. It's 221

like it's draining itself with 222

displacement.  223

[J goes under water] 224

Ah, milkbaths. I heard they were good 225

for your skin.  I remember when I 226

first moved in.  You had a ring of 227

dried froth all along the outside.  228

You said it was from all the regret 229

you enjoyed drowning.  Funny, I 230

thought that was what the alcohol was 231

for. 232

ATTICUS 233

[Pounds on door.] 234

J?  Are you in there?... I'm coming 235

in! 236

[He opens the door.] 237

What the fuck?  J.... 238

[J. goes under water stays for about a minute.  This is 239

literally a minute of taping completely nothing.  Yes 240

it is.Atticus goes to her and pulls her up, sits on the 241

side of the tub and hugs her.] 242

I'm sorry.  J, baby.  I'm sorry.  243

Jazzy?  Come on, sweet.  I'm sorry.  244

I'll never make you again.  I'm sorry. 245

I love you. J.... 246

[Atticus joins her in the bathtub, the milky water 247

spills over the edge.  The water is followed by the 248

camera again, similar to last time only this time the 249

camera follows up to her boss.] 250

J'S BOSS 251

Still not ready?  What is it this 252

time, the flu?  The measles?  H.I.V.? 253

J. 254

I'm sorry... 255

J'S BOSS 256

No, just go home. [Puts hand on 257

forehead, looking tired and 258

frustrated, and with the other hand, 259

waves her off towards the door.] 260

J. 261

[Talking to herself.] 262

"Just go home." 263

[J.walks over to the table she never served, grabs the 264

bill, the number and the tip and walks out the door.] 265

Just go home.  Go home, go home, go 266

home. 267

Home, home, home.  The grummy 268

apartment where I store my shit?  No.  269

The place I took my first breath in, 270

the place I woke up and didn't run,  271

the only place that I feel safe??  272

Home.  273

[J. starts to hurry down the street and suddenly it's 274

night time and she has her thrift store-grungy jacket 275

again.] 276

ATTICUS 277

J! Jos- I mean Jazzy, I mean, I'm 278

sorry. Fuck. I'm sorry.  Fuck, Jazzy 279

stop. Stop! I'm sorry. 280

[Atticus catches up with J. and tries to kiss her.] 281

J. 282

What the hell is your fucking 283

problem?  What don't you get about I'm 284

done? Just go find her.  You go dig up 285

the bones of your relationship, play 286

operation, fix it, and forget about 287

me.  Go to Spain like you always 288

wanted, have those kids I never did. 289

FOR-GET. 290

ATTICUS 291

J. that's not what I want anymore.  292

Josephine is a ghost. 293

J. 294

A ghost to stairwells. 295

[J walks on, starts trying to open random doors to try 296

and get in.] 297

ATTICUS 298

What are you doing? 299

J. 300

Finding a place to crash for the 301

night. 302

ATTICUS 303

J. don't do this, come home. 304

J. 305

[Dryly.] 306

You're not my home anymore. 307

[Atticus stops in his place as if he's just been shot 308

in the heart. J. keeps walking.  She walks and walks 309

and walks.  Camera stays on Atticus's shoulder.  We see 310

her walk away.  Carissa's Weird plays.] 311

Act 2: 312

MEMORY 1: 313

(Scene goes to a morning view of J. and Atticus. view 314

is yellowish.) 315

J. 316

But you just don't get it.  I'm not a 317

house made of windows like you.  I 318

don't get drunk every night just to 319

spill my guts to the bartender and 320

pass out to forget it all later.  I'm 321

not like you anymore Atty.  I never 322

was.  323

ATTICUS 324

[Sweetly] 325

I never wanted you to be. 326

J. 327

Riiiight.  You wanted me to be like 328

her. 329

[long silence] 330

ATTICUS 331

Can't we just drop that? 332

J. 333

I've tried. [pause] 334

And then you do it again. 335

[long silence. Then J sighs and gets out of bed.] 336

ATTICUS 337

You know I don't mean it. 338

[Walks over to to J.] 339

ATTICUS 340

You're it.  Come on, don't do this. 341

[with a smile] 342

The curtains are staring. 343

[smile gone, whinny] 344

Jazzy... 345

MEMORY 2: 346

[At a spec shop] 347

J. 348

Atty, get these. 349

[She puts on the ugliest glasses in 350

the store.] 351

ATTICUS 352

[With a smile] 353

Okay, hand the over. 354

[He reaches for them.] 355

J. 356

[Pulls her hand behind her back. They 357

struggle a bit, him reaching all 358

around her, almost molesting her to 359

get the the glasses, in a playful, 360

flirty way.] 361

I'll break up with you if you get 362

these.  [More struggle, he reaches 363

both hands around her to get them and 364

kisses her] 365

I will...[under her breath]  366

[Quieter]....sooner or later. 367

MEMORY 3: 368

[Atticus and J. are in a car.  J. is driving.  Atticus 369

staring out the window dumb like.  Death Cab for Cutie 370

is playing.] 371

J. 372

[whiney and kiddish, a little] 373

Do we realllllly have to go? 374

ATTICUS 375

[monotone, sickly, like his head is 376

somewhere else] 377

It's Mother's Day, she's my mom.  Yes. 378

J. 379

Sooo, can't we just pretend we went?  380

I'll bake you a cake and everything.  381

ATTICUS 382

J. stop it. 383

[They continue to drive in silence for a while.] 384

ATTICUS 385

[Yells] 386

Josephine!  Fuck, J. J. J.  387

[Antsy] 388

Drive North. Drive north. Drive 389

north.  Wait.  Steal compass.  Steal 390

compass, drive north, disappear. 391

[J. sighs.] 392

No, I'm serious this time, Josie.  393

I'll be good.  I'll be so good.  I'll 394

clean up my messes and never drink 395

again.  We can buy a real house with a 396

real yard and a real dog. It'll be 397

okay again, Josie. 398

J. 399

That's not my fucking name. 400

ATTICUS 401

Of course it is. 402

J. 403

Try Jazlyn.  Josie was the last 404

sucker. 405

ATTICUS 406

Are we back to this game again?  I'm 407

sorry for whatever I did.  Tell me 408

what it is, Josie, and I'll never do 409

it again. 410

J. 411

You were so much nicer to her. 412

ATTICUS 413

To you, baby. 414

J. 415

Shut the hell up. 416

[Atticus looks like a kicked dog and returns to his 417

window view.] 418

ATTICUS 419

J... I'm sorry, lets just go home. 420

[J. sighs and starts to drive to switch lanes to make a 421

turn.] 422

ATTICUS 423

Where are you going.  Compass says 424

left. 425

J. 426

You don't have a compass. 427

[Talking monotone, like he's a stupid 428

child.] 429

Home is this way. 430

ATTICUS 431

No, you don't know, home is the other 432

way. [He reaches and tries to turn the 433

wheel.] 434

[Car swerves] 435

J. 436

Atticus!! What the hell! 437

ATTICUS 438

This way is home. 439

J. 440

No it isn't... [Interrupted] 441

ATTICUS 442

Yes it is.  Drive. 443

[J. keeps driving for a while.] 444

ATTICUS 445

There!  There, Josie, there! 446

[J. sighs.]  447

ATTICUS 448

It's okay, we're here. 449

[J. turns into the Dairy Queen parking lot Atticus 450

directed her to.] 451

ATTICUS 452

We're here 453

[Long silence] 454

It's good to know you're still mine. 455

[Tries to take J's hand.] 456

J. 457

Go fuck yourself. 458

[pause] 459

Or better yet, find your Josephine and 460

fuck her, like you really want to.  461

Forget about me.  Forget about us.  462

We're done. 463

[Long pause.] 464

ATTICUS 465

J, Jazzy, Jazlyn... I'm sorry. 466

[pause] 467

Fuck I'm sorry.  You know it's not my 468

fault.... 469

[He digs under the seat, pulls out a paper sack with 470

audience-knows-what in it.] 471

MEMORY 3: 472

[J. and Atticus are at a park, in one of those long 473

sand tunnels.  Atticus's and J's heads are together.  474

Atticus is playing with J's hair.] 475

ATTICUS 476

Épouses-moi, restes la même, mens-moi et dis-moi que tu ne changeras jamais 477

J. 478

What's that mean? 479

[Pause, then Atticus looks in her eyes and smiles.] 480

ATTICUS 481

That means you're mine. 482

DISSOLVE TO: 483

[Same tunnel, different angle, J. and Atticus are now 484

on positions.] 485

J. 486

It's getting late... 487

ATTICUS 488

Remember that house you love?  That 489

old victorian up on Gene Field?  I'm 490

buying it for you.  That and 36 cats 491

and a billion flower beds for them to 492

frolic in. 493

J. 494

Are you? [raising eyebrows] 495

ATTICUS 496

Yes!  First day next month!  Interest 497

rates are supposed to be down then. 498

J. 499

They are. [kind of shakes her head and 500

smiles, like she can't believe what an 501

idiot he is, but also how much she 502

loves him.] 503

Act 3: 504

EXT. 505

(Night-back to present, same clothes as present view.) 506

[J. walking down a downtown street, she jumps up a few 507

stairs, trips up a couple, leads to an outside 508

apartment door.] 509

J. 510

[Yells while beating on the door] 511

Atty... Atticus!  Open the fucking 512

door!  Atticus, please!  Let me in! 513

[J. starts beating both fists into the door, she starts 514

crying and, with her fists still glued to the door, she 515

falls to the stoop.]  516

J. 517

I'm sorry. [pause, quieter] 518

I'll be Josephine if you want. 519

[After a short while J. wipes her eyes stands up, looks 520

straight up at the building and then makes her way to 521

the the side of the stoop where she hoists her self to 522

the window, opens it, and crawls through.  J. walks 523

into a dark house, stumbles, and gets up slowly, but 524

dramatically.] 525

[Through tears] 526

Atticus, I'm home, I'm home again.  527

For good.  It's the morning after 528

again.  Tell me we're gonna make it 529

through another day.  Atticus... 530

[J. walks through the house, searching, and looking 531

empty.] 532

Atty!  Atty... I'm home. 533

[stumbles to the answering machine and 534

presses some random buttons.] 535

[Whiny and tearful] 536

Atticus, I still love you, come out, 537

come out.  Come home. I love you, 538

Atty. 539

[J. walks to another room, falls onto a rug.] 540

Atty!  Come on!  Come out.  Remember 541

that time in the alley way last 542

Christmas?  Remember when we wrote our 543

initials in the snow and you said that 544

the snow would never melt because of 545

it?  Remember? The snow never melted.  546

I swear, I swear, I swear.  Come out! 547

CUT TO: 548

EXT. 549

NIGHT 550

[J. and Atticus in an alley way, standing in front of a 551

heart in the snow with their initials in it.] 552

CUT TO: 553

INT. 554

J. 555

[Getting louder] 556

Atticus!  Just stop!  557

[J. crawls to the wall] 558

We put these cracks in this wall.  You 559

can't tell me you forgot!! Did you?  560

CUT TO: 561

[J. and Atticus are in the room, trying to hang a road 562

sign  that says Fukus Street.  J. is under Atticus's 563

arms holding the signs and Atticus has nails in his 564

mouth and a hammer in his hand.] 565

ATTICUS 566

J!  Hold it still! 567

J. 568

I'm trying!  Stop tickling me! 569

[J.  steadies the sign, Atticus gets ready to hit the 570

nail in.] 571

ATTICUS 572

Okay, One, two 573

J. 574

Ah! 575

[She drops the sign, and Atticus hits 576

the wall with a hammer, forming a 577

crack.] 578

ATTICUS 579

You moved! 580

J. 581

Ah! I'm sorry. 582

[They both start to laugh.] 583

ATTICUS 584

Look what you did. [He runs his hand 585

over a crack, and they both laugh 586

harder.] 587

CUT TO: 588

[J. clawing the wall.] 589

J. 590

[Screaming] 591

Atticus!  Get your ass out here!  592

Atticus!!  I mean now!  I'll wear her 593

clothes, I'll dye my hair red like 594

hers, I'll speak with a British 595

accent, I'll be Josephine.  Atticus! 596

[Lights come on as she screams, you can hear some one 597

walking.] 598

J. 599

ATTICUS! 600

STRANGER 601

What the hell? 602

[J. Just stares at the stranger, gets up, wipes her 603

face and walks to the front door, unlocks it and 604

leaves.  J. just walks down the street, not crying, 605

very zombie like.  She walks until she gets to a 606

convenience store.  She goes to the back, grabs a 607

gallon of milk, walks to the front, shoves loose change 608

at the clerk, mumbles a harsh "thanks," and walks out.  609

She spots a homeless man across the street.  The 610

homeless man is on a corner laying and looking drunk 611

like.  J crosses the street and kneels down to him.] 612

J. 613

[monotone] 614

Where's the other one? 615

HOMELESS MAN 616

Other what? 617

J. 618

The other homeless guy, the one who's 619

usually here, the one with the woven 620

pocket lint blanket. 621

HOMELESS MAN 622

Oh, he died.  He suffocated on his 623

blanket in the middle of the night, 624

this is my street now. 625

J. 626

Oh.  Well... here. 627

[She hands him the milk and walks away.] 628

J. 629

[Thinking] 630

Is this my new feel sorry for myself 631

routine? Buy milk-feel sorry for 632

homeless man-give milk away?  Maybe 633

it's my way of feeling better about 634

pussying my way out.  Maybe one day 635

I'll sit beside him and drink the 636

whole thing right in front of him.  637

Maybe he'll eat my bones after I 638

die.   639

[J. speeds up, runs towards a bus, yells aimlessly and 640

catches it just in time, she steps up, trips a little, 641

throws pocket lint, a quarter and a receipt into the 642

money deposit place, the driver looks at her strangely 643

but reconsiders saying anything.  J. trots to the back 644

and lays in the very back seat in a fetal  position, 645

still teary-eyed and sniffley mumbles to herself.] 646

[mumble-ish singing] 647

In the morning after staying up all 648

night I Want to wake you just to hear 649

you tell me it's alright and all I 650

want to be is too much, sometimes, for 651

me. 652

ATTICUS 653

[In J's head] 654

Good morning baby I hope I'm gonna 655

make it through another day. 656

[J. shoots up straight in her seat. Her face is 657

ghastly.] 658

J. 659

[Not loud enough for anyone to hear] 660

Atticus! 661

[She walks down the isle with the bus 662

still moving.] 663

BUS DRIVER 664

Please sit down ma'am. 665

J. 666

[Whispering] 667

And when you rise you'll find me here. 668

BUS DRIVER 669

Ma'am, either sit down or get off. 670

[J. pulls the chord to get off.] 671

ATTICUS 672

[In J's head] 673

Open your eyes 674

J. 675

And see myself reflected there. 676

[J. hops off the bus, while saying that, looks around 677

blissfully like a crazy person, spins a few times, lays 678

herself down on a park bench.] 679

FADE OUT. 680

INT. 681

[J. and Atticus in bed, clothes on, middle of the 682

night, on top of the covers, with their arms behind 683

their heads, staring at the ceiling fan.] 684

ATTICUS 685

And for awhile... 686

J. 687

A little room becomes an everywhere. 688

ATTICUS & J. 689

[together singing] 690

Good morning baby I hope I'm gonna 691

make it through another day Good 692

morning baby I hope we're gonna make 693

it through another day. 694

FADE OUT. 695

FADE IN: DIGITAL CLOCK READING 4:11 696

[Atticus is out of bed, getting dressed in clothes that 697

look a little too dressy.  He jumps on the bed beside 698

J.] 699

ATTICUS 700

[VERY anxious, kiddish] 701

Baby! It's time to go!  Get the car, 702

we gotta go, we gotta go, J! 703

[Shakes J.] 704

J. Get upppp! 705

[J. rolls away from Atticus, glances at the clock, 706

moans and goes back to sleep.] 707

ATTICUS 708

[whiney] 709

Baaaaby, this town... 710

[makes an "ugh" noise sounds more his 711

age] 712

It doesn't feel like mine anymore... 713

I'm-I'm [crackly] 714

Ready to inject heart attacks straight 715

into my jugular and if i don't get out 716

soon I promise you I'll pull out all 717

my hair and...and... 718

[gets uppity] 719

And make a voodoo doll!... of myself! 720

And I'll- I'll push all the pins in 721

until all my veins are dry. 722

[sounds almost proud as he finishes] 723

J. 724

[Loudly, moaning-ish, grunty] 725

ALRIGHT! 726

[Throws the covers on the other side 727

of the bed] 728

Where are we going? 729

[She struggles to find her clothes] 730

The ambulance parking lot?  Or how 731

about the empty dairy queen? 732

ATTICUS 733

[Searching through the closet] 734

No, we're going away this time.  Far 735

far away. Here, wear these. 736

[He tosses her clothes] 737

[J. looks at the clothes blankly, almost angrily.] 738

J. 739

[mumbles while putting them on] 740

These aren't mine. 741

[pause, followed by a long sigh] 742

ATTICUS 743

[Like he ignored her] 744

It's good to know you're still mine. 745

[Atticus helps J. off the bed.] 746

ATTICUS 747

[to himself, talking like a child] 748

We'll need this, 749

[grabs his guitar] 750

And this 751

[grabs anything] 752

And this! 753

[grabs a picture of another woman, and 754

points to it and shows J.] 755

You! 756

[J. Sighs and stomps out of the bedroom, grabs her 757

infamous jacket, walks to the fridge, pockets some 758

cheese.  Walks straight outside.  Walks to the car, 759

mumbles to herself, gets in, a few seconds later 760

Atticus joins her, throws random items and some bottles 761

at his feet, puts the picture on the dash, puts the 762

guitar in the back seat, buckles up.  J. drives away as 763

Atticus talks.] 764

ATTICUS 765

Let's go!  Turn the car key and take 766

me Far far far far away.  As far away 767

as it goes! Iceland.  Wait, We can't 768

drive there... [Mumbles to himself and 769

the picture.] 770

[J. slams the brakes; Atticus hits the dash and the 771

picture falls.] 772

ATTICUS 773

Josephine!  That was not nice, I know 774

you don't like this picture, but... 775

[Turns away and looks outside and 776

mumbles to himself.] 777

[J. sighs.] 778

ATTICUS 779

You know, when we get to the ocean, 780

I'm going to put teeny-tiny baby 781

seashells under my finger nails.  Yep, 782

and then itsy-bitsy little star-fishes 783

into your eyes.  And.. 784

J. 785

[Interrupts] 786

Psh, like we'll get there.  Yeah.  787

Right. You'll find a cloud that looks 788

like her and I'll have to pull over 789

and wait for the storm to pass.  Or 790

we'll pull over just to let you cry it 791

out for the next two hours. 792

ATTICUS 793

What are you saying?  I don't do 794

that.... THERE! TURN THERE!  795

JOSEPHINE!!! THERE! 796

[J. slams on the breaks and pulls over.] 797

ATTICUS 798

What are you doing?  Josie, don't you 799

want to see the ocean? 800

[J. sighs and finds her seat recliner and drops the 801

seat.] 802

FADE OUT. 803

EXT. 804

FADE IN:BACK TO PARK BENCH 805

[J. sighs and stands up, her face a dryer, she seems a 806

bit more composed.  She looks around to find out where 807

she is, realizes it and starts walking, hands in 808

pockets.  She walks to her house while reciting to 809

herself.] 810

J. 811

[Talking to herself..] 812

It's alright, I've figured it out I'm 813

just the frame you use to cover the 814

crinkled edges when you're spending 815

two hundred heartbreaks to get the 816

gold one polished. it's alright. I can 817

be the battered wood frame With the 818

tacky seashells glued to the edges and 819

the engraving on the back of a first- 820

grader's name. It's alright. I've 821

figured it out. No need to explain, I 822

understand. That was my job, wasn't 823

it? To understand? To comfort? To 824

laugh at all your stupid jokes and to 825

pretend the gold frame only needed a 826

few more coats Of your sugar-coated 827

lies and it'd be top dollar again. No, 828

no, no. I don't mind going in the 829

attic for a few more weeks... or 830

months or days or however long it took 831

the gold frame to slip up and dull 832

from all the wasted tears You cry over 833

it's dented rim. It's alright. It's 834

alright. I really don't mind one 835

single bit. I was built this way, 836

Built with Five year old hands And 837

Elmer's glue. I was built strong. 838

Stronger than solid gold. I was built 839

by hands that Had never held another 840

heart. That's strength. 841

J. 842

So, there you have it, baby. Again and 843

again and again I promised I'd always 844

be there to tell you It will be 845

alright but I can't anymore, I just 846

can't...          &;nbsp;                                             847

J. 848

That's how the speech was supposed to 849

come out, that's what I meant to say 850

the last day I saw you.  And you, you 851

were meant to apologize a million 852

times and me my everything forever.  853

Shit for luck, huh? 854

[She lays on her bed, sits up, looks around oddly, lays 855

down, scoots to the other side, wiggles, scoots to the 856

middle, closes her eyes.  All the items in her house 857

that were associated with Atticus start disappearing 858

(see Postal Service's music video for Against all Odds 859

in background.) The screen jumps back and forth to this 860

and the end of the movie which will be the following.] 861

CUT TO: 862

EXT. 863

Returns to the car scene, they're both sitting in 864

silence J. gets out of the car, slams the door. 865

ATTICUS 866

Josie?  Are you alright?  What's 867

wrong, honey, just tell me and we can 868

fix it, there's band-aids in the glove 869

box I'm almost sure. 870

J. 871

You're never that sweet with me,  You 872

never call me honey, or sweetie, or 873

lovely, you never make cute jokes when 874

I'm down or cheesy stupid ones or 875

anything.  You sigh and swallow.  I'm 876

fucking sick of this, 877

ATTICUS 878

Honey, wh... 879

J. 880

[Interrupts] 881

No! I'm sick of your bullshit and your 882

half ass escapes. I'm sick of 883

Josephine's Ghost.  Sick, sick, sick, 884

sick to death.  I'm sick of you. 885

[Atticus looks dumbfounded.] 886

J. 887

[calmer..] 888

You want me to be her.  I can't.  I'm 889

not.  Half the time I'm not even sure 890

who I am and you want me to be two 891

people.  I can't do it anymore, Atty.  892

You had your choice to pick between us 893

and I guess you did. 894

[she walks back into her car turns the 895

key, drives away, Atticus stands 896

dumbfounded still, doesn't move at 897

all.] 898

[J. drives until you can't see Atticus anymore.] 899

FADE OUT. 900

INT. 901

[J. is waking up, in the same clothes, all the stuff 902

that was disappearing is gone, she looks like hell.  903

She turns, her alarm clock reads 4:11, she pulls the 904

cord out of the wall and turns it off, she walks 905

straight through her house, doing nothing, no bathroom, 906

no breakfast, no anything, she starts to walk down the 907

street, runs back, hops in her car, drives two blocks 908

to work, runs out, bursts through the doors.] 909

J'S BOSS 910

[sarcastically] 911

Oh my stars!! She's on time!!!! 912

J. 913

She's early!  She has socks on!  She's 914

ready to work! 915

J'S BOSS 916

About time. 917

[Goes to the kitchen grabs her apron and a tray, she 918

walks right to the table in the corner, as she does, 919

camera view gets blurry and blue again, everyone starts 920

going crazy like before, she walks straight to the 921

table she missed before, she drops the tray of 922

everything along with the tip, the recite and the 923

number, everything goes back to normal, she walks 924

outside, her boss tries to heckle her into coming back 925

but she continues to walk, she gets into her car 926

drives.] 927

CUT TO: 928

[J. walks into a building, it looks like a bar, she 929

sits beside a guy.] 930

BRIAN 931

Jazzy! I didn't think you show!  I've 932

missed you.  933

J. 934

I missed you, too, sorry I keep 935

canceling... shit, stuff has been 936

crazy. 937

BRIAN 938

I understand, I'm just glad you came. 939

J. 940

Me too, I'm sorry again for canceling, 941

I think I really like you, Atty. 942

BRIAN 943

[Looks confused, almost offended.] 944

yay! i love it. its going to be so amazing with all the twists and turns. i only provided the main idea of the story. youre truly the mastermind behind this piece and i love all the small things that make the characters a little bit more insane as the story plays out. awesome work and i hope you have fun shooting it.

    woah.

This was the best piece i have read on here in a long time. ♥

I got so, so confused in places! But i guess that kinda adds to the flavour of this piece, kinda choppy, less cheesy. (speaking of cheese, the whole lactose intolerance thing was Fan-bloody-tastic, the way she goes to get the cheese and puts it in her pocket ♥

wow. i am just blown away by this. it is sooo ironic at the end when she calls Brian 'Atty', that was a really nice touch. This would really work as a movie/short film, and it's sad cos some of the fantastic ideas only really work when you see them.

At first i thought Jezelyn was crazy, bonkers, but the more i read the more i realised that Atticus was the one with the problem (although im sure she has her fair share )

I really love their ideosyncracies (sp?!) like J's milk thing, the sock thing, and her watch always saying 4:11. that adds another dimension and welcomes the reader in with open arms to share something special.

The part about the crack in the wall in the stranger's house was really really sad, but there were some really cute memories too, like the part about the initials in the snow, and when she shouts that the snow hasn't melted... i loved that idea.

This is really fantastic. well done

    ♥ xxxx
