She stared out the window at the moon, ignoring her parents' calls and her phone's annoying ring tone. She rested her forehead against the glass and sighed. 1
They didn't understand that she wanted to be left alone. Alone with her thoughts. They wanted to understand, but how could they understand how it felt to be different. 2
No one else felt the way she did. Annie understood, being her best friend for life had her understanding everything Billie felt, but not always or ever relating. 3
She flipped her cell open, rolling her eyes at the number of missed calls: 15, and shutting off her ring tone. She wished Chris would call. 'Chris could understand, if you told him. . .' the little voice in her head whispered. 4
Chris was her other best friend, gay and she was totally in love with him. He always joked that they'd be perfect for each other, if only she was a boy, or he wasn't gay. And every time she wanted to blurt it out, the truth, the secret she kept: She wanted to be a boy.
