The Place You Have Come to Fear the Most

Wednesday: 11:14 a.m.1

"I'm sorry Mrs. Stevens, but given the placing of the tumor, lack of response to radiation and surgery, you only have until tomorrow to live." 2

"B--But, you can't know that for certain."3

"Not for certain, no. But it is my medical opinion that it's extremely unlikely you'll live past tomorrow. I'm sorry. Do you have someone. . .?"4

"My husband is in the waiting room. We're supposed to go on vacation this Friday. What do I tell him?" Her eyes filled with tears that threatened to spill over down her cheeks. She was much too young to die. 5

She could tell how uncomfortable the doctor felt, hugging her, but having been handed her life sentence, she couldn't muster the emotion to feel bad. "Tell him that you love him very much, and hold on tightly. I'll send him in."6

She couldn't hold back her tears anymore when Tom stepped into the room, and she fell into his arms, sobbing, wishing for more time. 7

"Our trip will have to wait."
